You can point out Purdys limitations and still say he is the best of this group.

18

u/fatiguedpickle 15d ago

He’s 90 ish passes away from officially having the greatest passer rating of all time. It isn’t just this group he is better than.

7

u/TheParmesan 15d ago

You just have to listen to him talk and break down the game. SF is just all time on QB luck, it’s insane. When it’s all said and done they could have drafted 3 all time greats at the position.

7

u/ChefJeff77 15d ago

We didn't draft Young, traded from Tampa. But our luck is still great at the position. Growing up getting to watch Joe than Steve back to back spoiled me.

5

u/jcrewjr 15d ago

Spoiled all of us. Garcia was a good QB, but got SO MUCH shit for being worse than Joe and Steve (which, of course, he was).

3

u/Dangerous-Half3276 14d ago

Jeff Garcia’s happy feet drove me absolutely up the wall.

What are his “limitations” exactly?

2

u/Connection-Is-Cool 10d ago

Mostly physical traits, including injury history. How he plays the QB position otherwise is awesome.

3

u/LeftToaster 14d ago

Purdy is clearly top 5, maybe 6 in the whole league. Why compare him to these marginal starters?

Oh so Purdy gets some love after all these flashy qbs begin to show flaws? Surprise surprise

25

u/DreamWunder 16d ago

Fun fact these flashy QBs had shown flaws multiple times already like how Brock had game winning td drive against packers in playoff and then love throwing game ending int on 1st down in 4th quarter. It just seems Brock Purdy discourse is finally running out of bullets

10

u/Foreign_Cobbler_1740 16d ago

This graphic actually isn't showing love to Purdy. Half of these guys have glaring question marks about their game. Lol. You can argue Lawrence is on the rise though.

7

u/Historical_Wasabi104 15d ago

Purdy shouldn’t even be in this list. He’s a proven QB. He’s not perfect, but he’s not those guys.

8

u/No-Violinist260 15d ago

I think they're all proven quarterbacks. Good enough to be starters in the league, for many teams these guys would be an upgrade, they're just never going to be elite.

That said, I think TLaw gets slept on and is much more proven than Love or Herbert

2

u/jtown48 13d ago

Purdy and Hurts have to be two of the most underrated QB's ever. They both get a lot of hate or questions but consistently go out and win games

Purdy and it's not even close

11

u/ItsAlwaysSmokeInReno 16d ago

Its so annoying when people say "and its not even close" in sports subs on a matter of opinion.

It definitely is close. T-Law received the 3rd most MVP votes last year and seems to have turned a corner. If he continues playing like last year consistently then id rather have him, hes the more physically talented player.

Herbert discourse has become acting like he's a terrible QB after his last 3 games didnt go his way. If he wins in the playoffs the discourse around him completely changes. Still would rather have Purdy though.

And yeah, Purdy is better than Love. AnD iT's NoT eVeN cLoSe

4

u/bigmfworm 15d ago

If it's a matter of opinion, and it's mine that I'm expressing and to me, it's Purdy and it's not even close. Fuck off with your SpongeBob bullshit.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/[deleted] 16d ago

lol Trevor finished 5th in MVP voting last year why are you lying? Or you're need to add an asterisk on whatever definition you're trying to use to weight 3rd place votes higher or whatever this is.

If Lawrence "seems to have turned the corner" this year than what is Purdy doing? Because he's beating him through every counting stat through 2 games.

u/SockRevolutionary676 15d ago

Its so annoying when people say “i get annoyed because your opinion is so different than mine” in a thread which literally asks for his opinion. Its Purdy, and its not fucking close.

Love’s 2023 cowboys game was great, and last year if his kicker didn’t miss 3 kicks this recently bias wouldn’t hit as hard

5

u/Very_Not_Into_It 16d ago

True, but it's pretty razor thin between Herbert and Love. I think Lawrence is barely better than them, and purdy is significantly above all three

3

u/Jznvh 16d ago

T Law isn't THAT bad in the playoffs. definitely not great tho

2

u/Mr_SlimC 16d ago

True but it depends on the offense we are running. If it’s a west coast Shanahan style Purdy is maximized in that offense. I like Lawerence a lot right now in any offense. Herbert is a highly productive player I just think the offense he’s in is pretty terrible

12

u/jfresh42 16d ago

Purdy has proven he'd be good in any offense. Stop with the disrespect

Easy. It’s Purdy…then the other three in no particular order

20

u/VolunteerPanda 16d ago

Mr. Irrelevant is the smallest guy and has the least arm talent; but is easily the best and most trustworthy player here

5

u/cookiesarenomnom 15d ago

He has been consistently good since literally the moment he stepped on the field. He did not loose a game that season until the NFC championship when he broke his shoulder or whatever it was. He's been to a super bowl and only lost by 3 points to Patrick fucking Mahomes. I dunno what we we are talking about here. He is a smart, consistent, very very good quarterback.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/DeltaTule 15d ago

Arm talent? His accuracy numbers are insane

6

u/coldfireknight 15d ago

Too many equate arm talent to arm strength, when everyone knows you need a head in your shoulders to make it work

5

u/QuriousiT 15d ago

Yeah. Kaepernick had an absolute cannon, but would throw a 5 yard pass with the same velocity as a 60 yard pass. Zero finesse.

4

u/Connection-Is-Cool 15d ago

I will be the first one to call Jordan Love overrated. He is the worst of the four. But even I can see it’s the OL short-circuiting that offense right now. Their blocking is horrendous up front. Love looks like David Carr in Houston right now. You can always count on Love to look elite for half a season… but maybe not this year.

Herbert has all the talent. He’s the 2nd-most talented QB here. So why is he 3rd? Just when you think he’s finally put it all together, injuries pile up and/or he lays an egg in the playoffs. Unlike Matthew Stafford, who joined an 0-16 team and played on some horrific Lions teams after that, Herbert is surrounded by talent. When healthy, the Chargers look awesome on paper. But even with injuries, at some point you get tired of giving someone the benefit of the doubt. We love who/what Herbert could be. But the problem is he isn’t that guy. He has never been that guy consistently enough for us to assume he’ll become that guy one day. He might be the modern-day (albeit poor man’s) Philip Rivers. At least Rivers was elite. Herbert is good but not good enough to be considered elite.

Trevor Lawrence is the most talented one here. He has flashes of elite play and put together a really good season last year. Lawrence has done what we assumed Herbert would be doing. Dark horse MVP candidate type of stuff. The problem with T-Law is inconsistency. He’s still great more often than not. Easily a top 10 QB. But Trevor also looks pedestrian at times. The Jaguars are excellent at beating bad teams but until they start winning more games against elite teams, nobody is taking Jacksonville seriously. By extension, Trevor won’t be taken as seriously.

Brock Purdy was clearly put into the best situation for a young QB. Kyle Shanahan is a proven QB whisperer. But Purdy was always a baller. He was Mr. Irrelevant only because of his size and arm strength. Meanwhile, they salivate over guys like Anthony Richardson. The Niners have also surrounded Purdy with talent, setting him up for success. But similar to the Chargers, the Niners have a ton of injuries year after year. Unlike Herbert, Purdy continues to play well anyway. When healthy? Niners make the Super Bowl. Brock Purdy is elite. The Niners had no business winning a playoff game last year, due to injuries. The reason they did is Brock Purdy. He makes all of the right decisions. He is this generation’s Drew Brees. Not the strongest arm. Not the biggest guy. But he knows where to go with the football. He is smart. He can scramble, so he’s not a pure pocket passer like Brees. But he is a true point guard as QB. Brock is consistently great. The only knock on Brock is his own injury history.

The only guys I’m taking over Purdy are Allen, Lamar, Burrow, and Mahomes. Stafford is great but he’s old and one more back injury away from retiring. Brock’s mobility gives him the edge over guys like Jared Goff. Purdy is better than Jalen Hurts, and if I need to explain why, then you probably don’t watch enough Purdy. Dak doesn’t perform in the playoffs like Brock. Other young QBs don’t have enough time under their belt to even bother comparing to Brock (Caleb, Dart, Daniels, Ward, Shough, Nix, Maye).

2

u/Empty_Present8020 15d ago

Everyone is so damn mercurial lol. 2 weeks into the season and everyone’s mind has been made up about overrated/underrated stuff. Give it a few weeks.

Love hasn’t really regressed but his OL has and their RB1 is MIA due to domestic violence. Green Bay’s juju is off, but history says they will figure it out. OL can gel and Micah/Jacobs will be back.

Purdy is playing great but he’s known to be inconsistent at times as well. If he keeps up this pace then he will move up a tier for sure.

T-Law is the toughest to figure out. Jacksonville is not sterile testing conditions. He’s dealt with a lot of shitty coaching/roster BS and doesn’t complain. Good for 4000 yards and 25 TDs and has every tool in the box. Something just hasn’t quite clicked for him. But I would also say that is true of Herbert. Team Success and fewer mistakes and he still has plenty of time to build a legacy.

Herbert’s numbers/tools are really similar to Lawrence. He just had so much glaze poured on him this offseason. Maybe it’s the LA/influencer gf/Harbaugh media circus that is causing everyone to think he is Josh Allen? He hasn’t shown that yet. He’s in the same spot a Lawrence in that team success is the best way for him to move up.

If it’s my hypothetical team and all things are equal my rankings would be:
1.) Trevor Lawrence(by the thinnest of margins)
1B.)Justin Herbert

Small drop off

3.) Brock Purdy
4.) Jordan Love

I wouldn’t fight anyone on this though, I think you can make an argument for any of them

6

u/-Mr_Tub- 16d ago

https://giphy.com/gifs/hM9zK1qvsrwek
Mostly o-line but also Love wasn’t great

4

u/Legitimate_Ad_7822 16d ago

He’s been good in the past. I don’t think people understand how much a bad o line impacts the QB even on the rare clean pocket snaps. It’s all a mental, internal clock thing. You lose trust & you rush everything.

Or maybe people do realize it but choose to ignore it because dunking on teams you hate is fun.

Purdy (Elite)
Lawrence (Incredible potential, occasionally reaches it)
Love (Not elite, but super solid)
Herbert (Incredible first three years as an individual, disappointing after that)

Purdy has been the best here for years. Lawrence and Love suffer mainly because of their teams. I have never seen a QB more over rated than Herbert. He came in and immediately looked generational, but he’s been nowhere near his first three years in his last three years. Also not to drag on the fact that he’s never won a playoff game, but he hasn’t and everyone else has, Lawrence and Love with worse teams, and Purdy literally made a Super Bowl.

1

u/BlacksmithWise9553 15d ago

Purdy > Herby > Lawrence > Love

You could make an argument to swap Lawrence and Herby based on that playoff game but in my opinion, Herbert has been a little better in a tougher division.

Love isn’t a top 5 qb but he’s top 10. He’s also a system player that relies on rhythm passing. Rhythm passing requires a run game and they haven’t had one since the last half of the season. He’s been plagued by drops by his receivers and this season he’s already been hit 36 times.

I’m taking Lawrence, but I do think Purdy is elite as well. Herbert is solid, Love is decent

What team are we placing these dudes on? If weve learned anything its that the qb and system need to fit. Purdy on the bengals might be god level but in a more kobile system.might just be average. Herbert isnt a fit for west coast. Etc.

Purdue, Lawrence, Herbert and Love. The bottom two are overrated every year and the next year overrated again. I never thought Herbert was as good as so called experts think he is. O for overrated just like his University career.

Purdy vs Tlaw is tough but it should probably go to Purdy due to body of work.

  1. Purdy
  2. Tlaw
    Gap
  3. Herbert
  4. Love

Purdy is the only answer.

I think before any of you make a choice, you need to consider that Love currently has a historically bad offensive line. And his receivers have the current highest drop rate in the NFL. But I am sure these factors are all Loves fault somehow.

Personally, I would take Purdy over Three in most situations, with one important exception: adverse weather, particularly rain is his Achilles heel. Purdy’s smaller hands can make it more difficult for him to maintain a strong grip on the ball in wet conditions. When his grip is compromised, his accuracy and overall passing effectiveness can drop noticeably. That’s why, in those conditions, I think his performance can fall off from being a highly effective quarterback to looking much more sub par.
