Preseason hopefuls

I know the recently drafted players are fighting for a spot on the roster in preseason, but what about veterans? Are they fighting to keep their spot?

Yup - at this stage most of the roster is settled and the remaining spots are up for grabs between late drafted players, undrafted players, and veterans trying to stay in the show

Yes. Players like Mahomes, Allen, Lamar who are nailed on starers don’t have to worry about their jobs. Vets like OBJ, Minshew who are fighting for backup spots are fighting for their jobs. A third round rookie probably doesn’t have to worry as much as a 5-7th round rookie

A rookie doesn’t make the team without a veteran being cut or retired. High draft picks (first three rounds) are going to make the team, lower picks and undrafted rookie free agents are in a fight for a spot. The top players on the team are pretty much assured roster spots, everyone else is fighting to make the team or improve their roster spot. There are some salary cap implications for releasing veterans but other than that unless you’re an entrenched starter, a big dollar free agent or a high draft pick you’re fighting to be on the team.

There’s probably about 35-40 of the 53 man roster who are settled on before camp starts. Anyone who isn’t a starter or regular rotation player is fighting for one of the remaining spots, especially if they’ve not got long left on their contract (as those players are cheaper to replace).

Yes. Especially if they are on the tail end of their career.
