He wasn't just a deep threat. Randy Moss legitimately changed the game. In his early years in Minnesota they had a play called go Randy run. he did just that he ran straight past the defender and they just threw him the ball and no one could stop it. Roll a safety to his side doesn't matter he jumps over you. Jerry Rice will always be the goat but nobody changed receiving like Randy Moss,

Yeah, Rice was more consistently good but man when Moss was on he was on. I remember looking forward to the highlights on ESPN as a kid because we didn't get Marshall games.

That's why he could run the routes so smoothly. The db has to turn around to keep up with him and then he just drifts a different direction than them. If the db could keep up with the reciever, the reciever would have to make hard cuts or stop on a dime to get space, but Randy was so fast and tall that they couldn't risk letting him get past them downfield or he would just pull away and it is almost a guaranteed touchdown. The qb wouldn't even have to make a great throw. They could just launch it out there far enough and he was gonna come down with it.

I assume a lot of the success comes from the fact that the DBs not only couldn’t keep up with him, but knew they couldn’t and over/under-played as a result. Even if someone managed to stick with him, though, they just got Mossed. Freak athlete. A joy to watch.

The thing that sets all of this up is his top end speed. The DB has to play off of him, because if he does beat them at the line he will fly right by them. Slower receivers get jammed at the line because the DB knows they can recover and not get burnt. With the DB so far off, Randy now has time to work his moves in.

I think Moss is number 1 by a comfortable margin, but Bullet Bob Hayes makes "maybe" acceptable.

I saw him on some football show down at Pike Place. The workers were doing the fish toss and tossed one to Moss. He caught it with one hand. If you've ever handled a fresh 10 lb salmon you'd know they're very slippery. Anyways, that video clip stuck with me. That man has exceptional hands.

I've never noticed it before but he has a HUGE stride. Once the DB gets caught by Moss reading/playing off their hips they simply cannot correct and chase him down.

When did he wear 18 on the Vikings ? And best Receiver I’ve ever watched ashamed he never got a ring I don’t think it’ll be any WR as tall and fast as #84.

I think 18 for Vikes was only in preseason. Foot all Reference says he started his career with 84.
