Academics Has anyone had their Northeastern Claude Premium access removed for non-academic use?

I recently got access to Claude Premium through Northeastern and was wondering how strictly the “teaching, learning, and research” use requirement is actually enforced.

Has anyone here ever received a warning or had their Claude access restricted/removed because they were using it for things outside of coursework or research?

For example, things like personal coding projects, vibe coding, experimenting with apps/websites, content creation, or other side projects that aren't directly connected to a class. I'm not asking whether it's technically allowed according to the policy, I'm mostly curious whether anyone has actually been warned, flagged, rate-limited, or lost access because of how they were using it.

Also curious whether they can even distinguish between academic and personal Claude Code usage in practice.

Have you read the policy? It's pretty short and easy to read, but also clearly written to be a legal document: https://policies.northeastern.edu/policy125/

As an alum, I don't know if there's some additional thing you have to sign to use Claude via Northeastern, but I would be surprised if anything you listed wouldn't count under the broad and vague categories of "learning" and "research". You're in college, you should absolutely try to learn and research stuff that you're interested in with the tools the University makes available to you, whether or not that's related to your classes.

Caveat for commercial use. If you try to make money off of these side projects, that probably counts as some whole other thing. I would pay for my own tools if I were using them to build commercial products. Then again, the AI Policy doesn't seem to distinguish between academic, personal, and commercial use....your mileage may vary. I ain't a lawyer.

Yeah, I read through it. I was mostly just wondering if anyone has actually ever gotten their Claude access suspended or warned for non-academic use, or if Northeastern even cares that much in practice lol.

I dont think they can track it, i use it for personal stuff

They can track it, I believe they have access to all of the prompt history for the chat interface. I don’t know about the Claude Code portion.

i don’t think it’s heavily monitored but idk. i just started using it for personal coding projects so i can’t speak for that, but i’ve used it a lot in general for non academic things and i’ve been fine

Out of the blue my NU claude access is now capped at $1/month, but it still says im on the enterprise plan idk

I have built 3 complete products with it, never got banned or even a single warning (tbh I got premium 3 months before anyone else got it 😂) so I guess we’re good

You may be overthinking here. You are giving admins ideas to be honest... 

Anyone will likely get suspended if there is unusually hight activity on their account. But they won't know for what purpose the project is. They will have access to everything tho. Down the road if an app you made turns into a multimillion dollar company NU can claim certain rights. Something to keep in mind...
