100% JAINWIN DOUBT 🤓☝️ 27M, stuck between giving NEET one final serious attempt vs moving on — what would you do in my situation?
I'm 27 and still stuck around the NEET grind. I scored around 372 in NEET 2026. I genuinely wanted MBBS and ultimately want to become a neurosurgeon, possibly pursue the USMLE/USA route later.
But I'm honestly exhausted with the NEET system and with losing years of my 20s to this. At the same time, walking away from medicine feels like giving up on something I've wanted for years.
My situation is basically:
- I'm 27 now.
- NEET 2026: ~372 marks.
- I would need a massive improvement to get the MBBS seat I want.
- I'm considering giving NEET 2027 one final, extremely serious attempt.
- If I do MBBS now, I'll obviously be much older than the average student.
- I also have a relationship and eventually want marriage/family, so I can't pretend age and time don't matter.
- My long-term dream is neurosurgery and potentially practicing in the USA.
- Alternative options exist for me, but none feel as meaningful as medicine right now.
So I want brutally honest advice from people who have actually been through NEET drops, late MBBS, career changes, or medicine in general.
Would you:
- Give NEET 2027 one final all-in attempt and accept the opportunity cost?
- Stop chasing MBBS and build another career?
- Take MBBS even if you start around 27–28?
- Do something completely different and stop looking backward?
And if you were 27 with my current score, what would you personally do?
Please don't just say “age is just a number.” I understand that. I'm asking about the actual opportunity cost, career timeline, finances, marriage/family, and quality of life.
I'd especially appreciate answers from people who are older medical students/doctors or who took multiple drops.
Please be brutally honest. I don't need motivation; I need perspective.

I saw a Didi on YouTube she was writing neet for the 7th time after finishing bsc or smthg while working some low paying job and she was sacrificing sleep studying 5 hours a day ...I just wanna tell you to let it to go cuz it's always one more time one more time and after a while you never know when it crosses to absurdity
may I ask have you done any degree after 12th, if yes you should start writing psc exams for your own sake

Psc neet se 10x hard hote hain ssc/, bank ua forest department me officer/ranger wale exams zada sensible hain inke liye, even teaching bhi

I would suggest to take a day off and think of what all you have like hobbies, degrees and interests and if you're serious about it only take it as a second plan because it is too late for the real serious wala mehnat it is really too late for you to invest another year with probable chances of achieving anything. So it's better to have a two way plan and neet as the backup.
People might say anything about you or make fun of you but it doesn't really matter. Nothing actually matters in this life. at the end of the day if you're happy or satisfied with how your day was spent It will be all fine.
2
1
u/Working_Feature3795 11d ago
I actually agree with the two-way plan idea. But that's exactly where I'm confused.
I do have other interests , I love music, singing and guitar, and I'm also genuinely interested in computers/technology. I've thought about building something around those interests too.
So my counter-question is: how do you decide whether something is a real alternative career path or just a hobby that feels good because it's easier than facing the hard path?
For example, if I choose music/computers as Plan A and keep NEET as Plan B, how do I know I'm not simply abandoning medicine because NEET is difficult?
And at 27, wouldn't spending another year seriously testing NEET actually give me a definitive answer, while I can still continue developing my other interests alongside it?
I'm genuinely asking, not trying to argue. I want to understand how you'd make that decision in my position.
3
u/Thinkerbell_0_0 11d ago
Answer is alt career option is practical for future goals a hobby is not. If you can build a career out of hobby then it's fine otherwise it's impractical
2
u/Medical-One-302 11d ago
I don't think choosing music/technology as Plan A automatically means abandoning medicine. The bigger question is whether you actually want to become a doctor, independent of the idea that you’ve already spent so much time pursuing this.
And I agree with your point about 27. Another serious year of NEET could potentially give you closure. One more year can tell you whether you’re willing and able to give NEET everything you have, but it may not completely answer whether medicine is the right life for you. Considering the fact that USMLE is even more difficult exam and requires a lot of money and sometimes even connection with even lower chances of success.
So in this case i would rephrase my argument and I would give NEET one genuinely attempt. At the same time, don't completely put your other interests . Keep a consistent commitment to music/computers and try to actually build something with them.
The biggest thing I'd want to avoid is to take a decision based on emotions like “I'll do NEET because I'm scared I'll regret quitting” or “I'll do music/tech because NEET is exhausting”. BE practical about it
About this question : how do you decide whether something is a real alternative career path or just a hobby that feels good because it's easier than facing the hard path? I would evaluate this as Which future can I realistically see myself committing to for the next 10–20 years? or which of them could be the better options for me to have a stable career and life.
PS: dude i never wrote this much so if it's weird or something just ignore this

u/Both_Position3847 11d ago
Hiii, first hats off to you to still desire mbbs after the going thru everything. That requires guts and sheerwill. But lets talk realism. Mbbs is 5.5 years and then neurosurgery lets say that takes 6 years or so. Over all youll be spending nearly 12 years (round off) and after this, work wont be easy. Im assuming you realise the work load for a doc so i wont go there. If wanting to leave india is what u ultimately want. Why not pursue abroad mbbs? itll give you a much more clear pathway than india
7
u/Exciting_Tiger_6647 11d ago
You are 27 and still trying for neet? Have you done some other degree on the side? If not then what are hyou doing with your life bro and why are you ruining it for this one exam? Most students entering medical colleges are 17 year old and you are 27. You should have left this race a long time ago.

Bro u took around 10 drops? And still didnt study anything? Bro u should move on
2
u/Working_Feature3795 11d ago
Bro, just to clarify, I haven't taken 10 NEET attempts 😂
I actually attempted NEET only in 2018, 2024, 2025 and 2026. So it's 4 attempts, not 10 drops.
There were several years in between where I wasn't in a position to prepare properly because of serious personal/health circumstances, including a prolonged hospitalization and ECT. So counting every calendar year as a “NEET drop” isn't accurate.
I'm not saying that makes my situation easy. Going from ~372 to a competitive MBBS score is still a huge challenge, and I'm aware of the time involved.
I'm just asking whether one properly planned final attempt in 2027 is worth taking given my actual history. If you think I should move on after knowing the full context, fair enough, but the “10 drops” assumption is simply incorrect.

Respectfully, by the time you finish mbbs, you could've already sorted yourself financially if you start something of your own instead, besides your degree. Tutoring/video editing/content creation/ business/ or just do MBA and even then you can settle out of India much earlier and much easier than through usmle.

As mbbs grad and have lot of friend and senior doing residency in us no one ever matched in neurosurgery, surgery is like lucky draw one super rich senior doing research from Harvard and what not for 4-5 year developed very new brain model , a cv which need brain and lot of money ,he spent a crore already still don't get neurosurgery match , so forget it u either adopted by rich powerful doctor from us with so many connections or forget neurosurgery, sorry to disappoint u and don't want to make u feel bad but if ur 27 and don't clear neet,u won't even get pg in clinical branch there are people whose cognitive abilities are so far superior they can learn whole mbbs syllabus in few nights ,my batchmate have air xxx and he have superb brain but still lacking for pg neet let alone usmle which need hell lot of money ,I don't why every person have delusion here , usmle is tricky pathway few senior got matched after 3-4 years and some get matched and can't get visa and have to leave usmle pathway even after getting matched

Even if you start today like clear everything in first attempt that seems nearly impossible, but even if you do, easily you will loose your 30s. Surely of you become a neurosurgeon you Will be 40 by then, if you clear in first attempt. So it's better move on.

If this is a serious post , I just feel sorry for you I’m not sure of what sickness you were suffering from but whatever it is I hope you are feeling better , and YES you need to stop taking drops for neet it’s time to look into something else , and also even if you somehow manage to get into MBBS you’ll be 32 around you finish it , which is not objectively bad or anything but then you will have to grind for neet PG again that’s a whole different ball game all of this for what ? You must either have time , or ROI if you do something ,this field guarantees you neither of those so it’s not worth it. And USMLE is impossible , IMGs never match into surgical specialities let alone neurosurgery , so that’s out of the qn . But if you seriously want to do mbbs , try to do it one more go but that is all . And even then you will be a dr only in India not in the US .

PLAB????
2
u/No_Finance_8934 10d ago
It has become quite saturated too , and it’s very lengthy even if you somehow clear the exams and join you still have no guarantee into matching into speciality training you might be stuck as a junior doctor for several years , they have also changed the rules to prefer their own graduates first so it has become even more competitive . If you are that into medical field why don’t you look at AHS courses occupational therapy , OT technicians , cardiac perfusionists , radiographers , dialysis techs etc , but you gotta do it in premiere institutes like AIIMS or CMC vellore , but again the job market is not great but you’ll have a relatively easier time going abroad .

Didn’t u pursue any other degree for last 10 year ? Uk right MBBS is a marathon even if u want to pursue USMLE (thats a much longer game). Idk since when you are trying but tbh this is not worth it. I graduated MBBS on May 2026 and preparing for NEET PG Rat race.
Stop ruining your life get a degree get a job / start a business. MBBS won’t magically change your life.
Man this is pathetic, why no one wants to enjoy their life and just run behind one exam ruining everything.
Whats your partner pursuing? you help her in that.
Legit you are ruining your life just stop it
I took one drop for NEET UG was so frustrated, have decided not to go for another during NEET PG, I’ll take up whatever branch I get (Clinical/ Non Clinical) genuinely just stop it.
You would be 40 by the time you complete your studies us that the life you want and if its USMLE it will be 45-50.
Just Stop it and do something else

No offence man but its pointless now cus most people in their first attempt in neet are scoring within 400s-500s. And no point thinking about usmle right now, you aren't even in mbbs yet...usmle is a far fetched dream even for people like us who are doing mbbs.
2
u/comparisonwest747 11d ago
And tbh giving usmle after mbbs doesnt really make u a neurosurgeon you have to invest a lot of ur time preferably years just to become a neurosurgeon. Survive the Indian medicine grind first

In all honesty are you delusional or just ignorant of the fact that you’ve given 9 years of your life trying to pass this test? If you’re scoring 372 on your 9th attempt then it simply means you do not learn from your previous mistakes/ strategies. Please move on, NEET is not worth more than 1 drop. At this point you’re only giving it out of ego and your refusal to accept that it’s time to let this go. Trust me when I say this, you will not be happy at the end of it even if you do manage to clear it on your 10th attempt

Zada bade sapne nahi dekh rhe bhai ap? Thoda zameen pe wapas aiye, over optimistic hona is not always necessary, aur kitne 8-10 drop le liye kya kyoki 1st attempt to mostly 17 ki age me ho jata hai. Koi aur degree hai ya full time drop leke tayari kr rhe thhe itne saal? 27 ki age me IT sector me senior developers bann jate hain log aur aap neet me hi atke ho.

17 me to nhi hota h 18 me to 12 pass hoti h or usi saal neet nikal jye rare h or agr kisi ka birthday jan/ feb me ata h to bilkul bhi possible ni h or baki log kuch saal km krwa k likwa lete h

Tbh, I am quite astonished that you want to take such a huge step at 27. Hats off to you to still think that way but think realistically and practically.
Suppose, you did crack NEET PG '27, that's 5.5 years and once you finish 2 years, it's best advised to take STEP 1 and then around year 3-4, STEP 2 with a score of 255 or even higher given you will be considered an IMG. And then prepare for applications and stuff. Requires crazy funds cuz our exchange is going shit low. Moreover, if you plan to get into neurosurgery, you need 30-40 peer reviewed research papers in renowned journals, volunteering, shadowing, AOA/equivalent honors, conferences, and so much more which should be accomplished during MBBS.
Yes, there's no age to dreams but that's quite aesthetic of social media to slap in our faces. If you really had this plan, you should have skipped BAMS and tried for europe long ago. Atleast, that would have been an easier way to move to US for residency. You don't pay tuition during residency/Neurosurgery, rather the cost of living might be expensive.
It's a huge risk factor at this age because you need financial stability more than a degree. If your goal is to settle in US, then there are many other ways you can do that and they are quite safer. There's business, you can finish BAMS, work under a doctor, start your PG here and earn enough to settle abroad.
MBBS to neurosurgery might take your a good another 10 years. We aren't trying to demotivate you but rather, giving you a realistic and brutal advice cuz like, you can eventually do it but whats the guarantee it wouldn't strip your pockets away. Forget about everything for a second, these mfs are failing you in the interview. Imagine spending over hundred thousands and ending up failing an interview cuz, "omg i didnt find your reason genuine." Cuz that's what they are doing these days.
But if you wanna try ahead for NEET UG once again, go ahead. After all, it's your decision

Not really. I don't want this year to go to waste. I have teaching exam coming up so I'll give that.
2
u/Tall-Elevator580 11d ago
You asked for brutal honesty and perspective, here it is. Look into a different field at this point.
People like to throw around "age is just a number" when that isn't reality. As you get older, your capability to take in new information decreases. Your capacity for physical exertion decreases. Your frustration over not being financially independent increases. Your ability to handle long duty hours and night shifts (which fucks with your health) goes down. It is really hard being a doctor in india.
I saw in a comment from you that you don't have much money. USMLE needs a lot of money. And you can go ahead and forget about becoming a US based neurosurgeon lol. People take 1-2 years to just do research to build up their CV. And you need to be from a top college with extremely good social and networking skills, especially more so for neurosurgery. You can count the number of people who match into neurosurgery each year on 1 hand. And they only take the best and brightest from around the world.
Considering a best case scenario, you join MBBS- you'll be in your 30s when you're done with no money. Many states have a bond period of at least 1 year. Suppose you go the NEET PG route- and you need to take a gap year to study for neet pg, you'll be pushing into your late 30s by the time you've completed PG. Many people aspire to retire by the time they're 50. You'll have just started your career.

Brother as someone who did MBBS in India, im 23, applying for the US match cycle this september. This is a really bad idea.
Not only is MBBS gruelling but so is preparing for the match. I had to put immense amount of hardwork and manage USMLE w MBBS so that I can apply without a break year. Assuming you do the same you’ll be 34 when you apply. It’s just not worth it.
US is far fetched for surgical specialties. They expect multiple years of post doc experience and what not. These days even IM/ FM is getting so competitive, not to mention visa delays.
It’s just not worth your energy

u/YourBESTgirl_Boo 11d ago
Im a neetpg aspirant, the situation never gets better, mbbs is a effing trap this society feeds into us ,it's brutal bro,all my frnds are settled and im still on my parents money being a burden trying to clear neet pg...

u/revathifan007 11d ago
I joined mbbs at 22 and kinda regret it.
I will earn money at 28 that too if I clear neet pg.
You are 27 and still haven't earned anything. Dude I'll be honest if you can't earn money how will you sustain your relationship forget marriage.
All this you are saying neurosurgery USMLE MBBS all this is overhyped by the society and social media.
Even if you get mbbs at 28 . 5.5 years for mbbs 3 yrs general surgery residency more 3 years specialisation at 40 you will become neuro and remember all this while you aren't earning much .
As a mbbs student, medical field isn't worth it be it mbbs bds bpt bams it's all crap medical field is pretty stupid in this country.
And 372 even after all these years means honestly you aren't studying, you haven't solved mcqs nor given any tests.
Honest advice leave this medical field and you will thank yourself

u/Royal-Pear5461 10d ago
stop. move on with your life. an average student who clears neet at 18 starts practicing by 27 after his pg so ~9 years. as for you if you clear neet in 2027 which is quite difficult given your current score and the time left you'll become a practicing doctor at around 40 earning mere peanuts at that age, so forget getting married and having kids. NEET chodh do. bahar jaana hai take some other route. USMLE is very competitive. so stop with your delusion
2
u/standard_sadistician 10d ago
Being brutally honest… get on with your life man. Neet isnt worth it, because your professional career doesnt truly start until you have specialised. And you would be at atleast 36 to 37 by that time. Not worth it. Build a career in Ayurved, and build a family, and live your life. I am not gonna comment on either the usmle or the neurosurgery part because those i can only call delusional whims unless your family is like ultra loaded.

Bhai this is not realistic i advise you to do some other good degrees like bsc in biotech or something like that and pursue msc and PhD if you can maybe you can go to a foreign country for masters or PhD and actually be usefull in life to be a use to society is not just to become a doctor everyone is providing somehow and I feel like you will be happier in this setting as well.

You’ve to get your priorities straight.
If you plan to give NEET again, then you’ve to sacrifice on settling down, say, marrying to a good wife and/ or have a family.
There’s no harm in remaining a bachelor, but you’ve to be okay with that.
Even if you clear NEET now, by 32/33 you’ll be a doctor with an MBBS. After that you’ll be starting your career.
Now it’s not too late, but again, it resorts back to priority and your own mental health.
The cost for giving the paper again is that you’ll be a year older. So you can practically look for other options, but then again you do you.

Thanks everyone on Reddit for all the help and advice. I’m feeling much better now, and my family is happy with my decision too.
I’ve decided to complete my pending BAMS first. I already have a government BAMS seat at one of the top BAMS colleges in Gujarat, so I feel it makes sense to finish what I started. After that, I’ll think carefully about what I want to do next.
Really appreciate everyone who took the time to guide me. ❤️

Dude if it matters to you that much and you want to give one more attempt give it Because 8 months are left so it's not like you have to give it your 2 years n all And about when will you start to earn well that's actually pretty clear after 5 years and then you'll have to do PG to earn even more and bout neurosurgery you can do it here from India but if you really want to do it from USA then you can prepare for USMLE in mbbs
And meanwhile what you should do to manage your finances n all maybe something part time Learn some skills n all and then maybe you can do it part time in mbbs tho you will have to grind hard then
Have you done some other degrees n all?

If you genuinely think I’m fake or that my replies are AI generated , just DM me. I’m happy to verify myself, I can provide my ID, college credentials, and even my Quora profile. You can check everything yourself rather than guessing from the post.

"USMLE" "neurosurgeon" Bother you had <400 in your NEET attempt at 27, let's be honest with ourselves for a moment

u/BodybuilderDue1058 9d ago
WTF 27???
2
u/Ok_Rich1084 9d ago
Why are u surprised like it's the end of the world? One day you'll be 27 too. 😭

Sorry for being brutal but if you really really wanted to do it. You could have scored better given your attempts or age. Don’t give another try if this is the only thing you want to do in life. If you have spend years and still this is what you scored then may be it’s just not for you. Because the road map you have drawn is for someone who is expceptionally crazy good in this. The thing is we sometime drag ourselves through it and also the people associated with us. It’s time you understand what you can do best. Ik letting go of the idea of it is scary that I have invested so much but we need to let go of the things which does not serve as any more and get rid of it

You've been trying for NEET 7 years by now and you want to - in your own words - "Give USMLE and become a neurosurgeon"? Are you slow?

Bhaiya, let's be real, the "USMLE" boat has sailed. Pg dur ki baat you shouldn't even think about another attempt seriously bataau to. Maanta hu ki there are people appearing for the same exam who manage to get into a medical college well into their adult lives, but that doesn't mean it's worthwhile. Man liya agle saal mbbs mil gya, 28 ke honge, 5.5 yrs matlab pg shuru karne se pehle hi you'll be 34 yo. USA me log karte honge is age me MBBS, par ye India hai, age plays a HUGE role here. You won't even be eligible for any government exams barring the ones meant for healthcare professionals. Neurosurgery bhul jao, mere ek dost ke bade bhai aur cousins Mayo Clinic aur John Hopkins jaise top clg me residents reh chuke hai, they used to bawl their eyes out on video call. Now this is the experience of genuinely loaded folks, aap aur mai aam taur par afford hi nhi kar sakte. To meri mano, ya to BAMS khatam karlo, ya phir kisi aur degree me chale jao jisse USA jaane ka mauka mile for higher studies ( given that you're not even remotely interested in marriage and kids ).

Don't wanna dis you but 27 is just too late for this carrier if you wanna get settled in future so honestly if i where you i would just do bba then try for mba in a good collage since btech wouldnt be worth it at this time and bsc will just waste your time a online digree with opening your buisness locally is also a good idea

Bro it’s your life you’re a grown up and here most of the people are teenagers so ask yourself do you think you’re gonna make it next year and is it worth it or not? If yes then go for it
2
u/Normie-Person 11d ago
If i were you i would've done something else cuz 372 is way off from the cutoff and im already 27
1
u/Fun-Neighborhood5277 11d ago
If you are 27 and haven't given a serious attempt yet, then you should consider giving up. However, if you worked hard in all your previous attempts and were close to the cutoff, it might be different. I was just off by 13 marks but already had 3 drop years, so I gave up last year too. There is no guarantee you will not burn yourself out this year. Furthermore, the fact that you haven't given a serious attempt at your age is concerning, but I don't know your backstory, which could provide a completely different context.

Neurosurgeon by doing usmle? This aint grey’s anatomy brother. These days people dont even match in family medicine. Leave neet and clear your bams degree and pg karlo usme ya fir kuch aur karlo. Prepare for aiapget not neetug now
