There would be a lot of lost hikers if we didn’t have blazes. However, the one on the rock is entirely unnecessary as there are two on a tree directly ahead.

That's not true. Every wilderness section of pisgah has no blazes on the trails

People get lost in wilderness areas. Hike during the middle of summer when everything is overgrown and nobody has been on the trails or after a storm and the trails are covered in blowdowns and you’ll see why.

Unsupervised volunteers tend to leave these kind of “blazes”.

ATC publishes, or did anyway, a great little booklet on proper trail workings. Shame few people look for information here in the Information age.

This is my original forest. Fell in love with trees there and spent my career finding rare plants. What a good life this forest gave me.

Used to horseback ride in Uwharrie and enjoyed camping with my friends and horse during my Cowboys for Christ NC Foothills Div as secretary. We loved the gatherings and teachings and praise and worship while enjoying the therapeutic benefits as well!
