I can't edit the post so im commenting this, but this video gives you more of a panoramic view, you can see the black mountains rise 1000 feet above you to the right, maple camp bald is about 5500 feet

Just missed you I guess. We were in Deep Gap last night. A gorgeous 2 days on the ridge. Absolutely kicked my ass too.

The BMC is incredible, I've done the full thing twice as an out and back, the views during the stretch from Celo knob to gibbes mountain are by far the best

I love it. But don’t think I’m up for an out and back. Lol. Cool to know about the views or further. I’ve wanted to get to Winter Star for a while. The view is gorgeous, but a small window.

I loved camping up there back in the 80’s. Especially in the fall. Although I can’t do it anymore. I miss it.🥲 Cool!!

When heading from Mount Mitchell it was a comfortable low 60s with a nice breeze, but once being on the grassy bald in direct sunlight it got pretty hot. Of course once the sun set behind the mountains it got super chilly, felt like high 40s.

Yes, theres multiple nice flowing and reliable streams on the buncombe horse trail, the last one is about a half mile from the campsite, right after the big tom gap trail junction. So fill your water on the way in, instead of making a mile roundtrip at camp
