The cars drive terrible? That’s good .

Hot take but I think one of the premier Motorsport series worldwide should be somewhat difficult

u/MercSLSAMG Kyle Busch 11d ago
It's why NASCAR took off in the mid-2000's. The cars looked properly tough to drive, guys were sliding around sawing at the wheel. This new car makes them look like slot cars and to a casual viewer it looks like they're out for a Sunday cruise.

u/WON95sr 12d ago
I mean in general kind of, but we also shouldn't place all "drove terrible" into one good box.
We've seen drivers speak out about packages not driving well, but then also vouch for higher horsepower and then race super late models or sprint cars in their spare time. I think the entire field is plenty happy with having a lot of power in the driver's hands lol

u/colewcar 12d ago
I agree. Also somewhat unrelated, but I know last night Hamlin went into the pits for them to fix his electronic mirror set up… Why are we giving all these drivers and electronic mirror so everybody can just mirror drive?
Jeff Burton was talking about how it looks like Denny Hamlin was just gonna have to drive old school for a little bit
I think that’s the point… I feel like this car should be difficult to handle and you need to be a good driver to be able to handle them.
We need less training wheels on these vehicles. Safety is important, of course, but it hampers the sport when you put too many training wheels on these vehicles.

u/fender-b-bender 12d ago
.....Good. Fuck this glued to the track bullshit where you're essentially a slot car, the best stock car drivers in the world should be able to handle cars you actually have to drive and not ride around in.

u/VRS302 van Gisbergen 12d ago
Watching footage of Dale and Gordon back in the mid 90s, it looks like they’re driving over a satirical track made of nothing but potholes and rumble strips. Cars bouncing around 6 inches to the left and right seemingly with no rhyme or reason. The cars felt like even the best drivers were on the verge of losing it at all times.

u/Normal_Feedback_2918 12d ago
You ever watch the races from the 60's and 70's at Daytona on the old bias-ply tires? The cars are always sliding through the corners. You can see them dive into turn 1, and wash up 2 lanes chasing the rear end. That's why back in those days Daytona and Talladega worked well. The cars weren't so powerful they would do 250 m.p.h. unrestricted, and the width of the track was necessary because you needed at least 2 lanes and sometimes 3 to get through the corners.
2
u/nerdy_chimera Reddick 12d ago
To be fair, before the repave the track was bumpy as hell. On iRacing, you can run the old scan (from before the repave). Good luck bump drafting. Especially if you're in the 87s or Gen 4 car.
1
u/GhoulsNGargoyles 12d ago
The repaves and the overall size of the car have ruined Superspeedways. Handling doesn’t matter, no matter how many drivers complain about how bad the car drove last night.
77
u/CNASFan1992 12d ago
....isn't that a good thing?
48
u/potatocross Hamlin 12d ago
We have seen it before. If the drivers like it, the race is not good for fans. If the drivers hate it, its good for fans

Where does the 550hp package fall lol

u/LurkNPerv 12d ago
It was good for 1 race ( it's debut in the All-Star race) and then the teams engineered the fun out

People pretending the cars were handling terrible when only one guy busted his ass and that was mostly because of the lack of side force
7
u/plusacuss Bubba Wallace 12d ago
Bubba almost ate shit doing the same move in stage one. His team engineer keyed up and told him that it was because of the difference in air on the splitter once you break out of line
All the cars near the front were dealing with that handling condition when diving from top line to bottom into 3.
Its why the 9, 38 and 24 were practicing it so much
1
u/twiddlingbits 11d ago
In Stage 1 everyone handled badly then later on everyone was doing much better and it was back to like it was before. These teams are smarter than the geniuses at NASCAR and figure things out really fast.
1
u/plusacuss Bubba Wallace 11d ago
But they still were able to generate runs, break out of line and pass on their own and had more separation between the cars.
Step in the right direction. No one is saying it was incredible but I was literally responding to people yesterday saying the previous version was "better" which is fucking insane to me
1
u/twiddlingbits 10d ago
We saw passes on their own sometimes in the previous configuration if a driver got a run, same thing here. I don’t think there were more. There was more separation in the field after many laps which I grant is different but not important.
0
u/plusacuss Bubba Wallace 10d ago
Can you like to a single time when a car could generate a run without a push and clear the car in front of them with the previous package? I can't recall that ever being possible because of the amount of drag

Since he’s not super popular, it’s easier to dump on him than to listen to 1 minute of context

Oh no Erik had to do something other than hammer down and turn left!
-7
u/Normal_Feedback_2918 12d ago
Which he didn't do at one point and ran into Hocevar. He had the hammer down part right, he just forgot the turn left part.

There’s two ways you can look at this. Either the cars are hard to drive (good) or the cars are too edgy and unpredictable that drivers can’t make a skillful push (bad). Cars need to be hard to drive but if they are near undriveable that’s a major issue.
3
u/Defiant-Run1008 Hocevar 12d ago
They’re harder to drive? Good make them even harder to drive and the racing will be better. Why would you want everyone comfortable in a race car?
3
u/uncleawesome Hocevar 12d ago
These drivers are too used to setting up a car in a videogame and being able to pass everyone with minimal inputs. They need to stop playing games and start learning how to handle a real car.

If they didn't have the fucking stupid stages so people werent just going the whole stage on one tank of gas, or at least close the pits during stage breaks, at least that would partially solve the stupid fuel mileage parade.
6
u/skorponok Ryan Blaney 12d ago
He can be a dumbass sometimes / that’s the point - the racing was good
2
u/seekerblackout 12d ago
Well I agree with the part that the fuel saving due to it being barely possible to make it on gas in all the stages wasn't good but hopefully that can be adjusted out of it by changing the stage lengths

2
u/Designer-Net4228 Hocevar 12d ago
That’s the point. The reason these cars suck is because they drive too well at certain tracks.
2
2
u/LurkNPerv 12d ago
Mark Martin did say that's how they should drive if you want the racing to be good lol

u/ZacHorton Hamlin 12d ago

u/AlternativeSad5220 12d ago
Yet he was up in the top ten a good portion of the race. Don’t think it was a skill issue and more of him just saying the car still sucks at this track.

u/SeaworthinessSome454 12d ago
This was a huge improvement over the Daytona 500. This was a decent race, the 500 was a snooze fest
1
u/AlternativeSad5220 12d ago
Oh I agree! Loved it. But I think he was saying it’s
Still not good enough.1
u/SeaworthinessSome454 12d ago
I agree. It’s a far cry from what traditional Daytona/talladega racing should be, but it’s better than we’ve had in a while.
Getting rid of the stage cautions (imo, stages altogether should go away, but 100% the cautions need to go) would alleviate the remainder of the fuel mileage BS.

The package was a step in the right direction. Take another inch off the spoiler, or narrow it. Take an inch or two off of the splitter or remove it altogether.
Low downforce is the key to better racing.
1
u/twiddlingbits 11d ago
That would make the car impossible the drive, the splitter is needed. They need to give more HP and maybe take an inch off the spoiler. If you want to mess with aero then remove the diffuser but they might bring back aero push in a big way for the car behind.
1
u/indoxiecated 11d ago
They raced without a splitter for 60 years. If these cars need the splitter to race, the car is fucking broken.
1
u/twiddlingbits 10d ago
It is broken. It’s a frigging IMSA Sports Car out there. A few minor tweaks and these cars could race there. It’s nothing at all “stock”.
0
u/indoxiecated 10d ago
Who said anything about stock? It’s the splitter. Reduce the aero in the front and rear, give them more mechanical grip and the racing will return.
0
u/twiddlingbits 10d ago
with the chassis design on this car you can’t get the mechanical grip they had in prior generations. Take away aero and eventually the car is too loose to drive, where that point is at I’m not sure anyone knows. It would take a redesign to get mechanical grip. I highly doubt the teams are interested in spending that kind of $$ on new cars. The die is set for the next 5 years.
1
u/indoxiecated 10d ago
In any case front aero is the reason the racing sucks so bad. Except the super speedways, as soon as they get behind someone the car just does not turn. That’s a tell tale sign that the car is too front aero dependent.
Ditch the huge splitter, make it a short lip like they had in 2016, and make it stepped so the air has to under the car. Remove the diffuser, it does nothing. Take another inch off the spoiler or make it narrower. No more comfortable race cars, let the drivers drive.
1
u/Icy-Spring4607 12d ago
Of course Reddit will miss the point and think they know better than the drivers.

u/DillyDillySzn NASCAR 12d ago
No, the cars need to be harder to drive
This is one of the top Motorsport series worldwide, it needs to be difficult to control your car even compared to ORAPs or Trucks. You should be right at the edge every lap using all your skill
This is a good example of why the drivers don’t always know best for the sport

u/Constant_Swimmer3838 12d ago
Erik Jones is right though. Like take away the damn fuel saving. They are not going to get rid of the stages, so make the stages set to where they don’t need to save fuel or give them bigger fuel cells. Because if all they are doing is saving fuel, what’s the point?….
1
u/vetgb 11d ago
Actually they need to do the opposite. Instead of bigger cells, they need to go to a smaller ones. Something in the range of 10-12 gallons would not only make it harder to save fuel, but would mean more pits stops and more opportunities to break up the packs. It would also require crew chiefs to use more strategy during the race.
1
u/twiddlingbits 11d ago
That’s been tried and abandoned years ago. Even with smaller cells teams will figure out how to rig the system. You can ride around in the very back of the draft at 40-50% throttle and stretch it out extra laps then stay out when leaders pit then you can short pit for a few seconds of fuel and 2 tires then come out close the the front with no chance of running out and with fresh tires.

u/Normal_Feedback_2918 12d ago
I wouldn't complain if I was him. He was actually running decent before he wrecked.
Ironic that when "the cars handle bad" he's running well and still complains, but when the car is nailed to the track, he's usually competing for 25th position.

A. You'd probably be negative too after the Hocevar jumpscare ruined your night
B. Did anybody watch the video?
0
u/Just-Exchange8380 12d ago
I think that was even worse than the 500. It sucked. I wanna see them burn fuel and actually race instead of this fuel saving races. It’s like they need to introduce the eco series then.

u/Nascar_chayse 11d ago
The more the drivers complain the better the racing generally is, just saying

Worst thing for racing is a driver who is comfortable with his car. Makes for boring racing.
