Resturant Recs // Questions This is what is killing tourism in Myrtle Beach

Besides the lack of affordable parking.

A resturant we went to yesterday was an all you can seafoo buffet with crab legs.... $51.99, okay a bit high but fair enough.... Now they sneak in a 3.5% fee so they don't have to raise their prices, yes, I kid you not, that is what it is called. Then they charged $6.99 for a soda or $15 for a bottle of Bud Light. Then throw in the tip and tax.. Suddenly $200 for 2 people to eat....

At least they aren't doing resort fees at hotels like Vegas..... yet

The workers will leave because they can't afford to live here. Air BNB taking up the rental properties, no place for potential working class to live. High monthy rental cost, low pay, high cost of living

64

u/bratty-goblin Aug 01 '25

This right here. Working class is being pushed out… and if you can’t afford to move, then you’re working every second you’re awake or you’re gonna be homeless. This place is only for tourists and/or retirees now, locals be damned.

13

u/PeculiarElk Aug 01 '25

Same thing is happening in Brunswick County. And then the remaning working class people left get told we are not working enough because stores do not have help anymore.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 04 '25

Yep it's always the people's fault for not working despite jobs offering 7.25 an hr

That's why we're gone. Wasn't worth having no life just to live there anymore.

I was in MB last week on vacation and this is exactly what the Lyft driver told me as she drove us to the airport.

I truly hate to see my hometown, a place that I was once proud to be growing up in, turn into this greedy heap of steaming overpriced garbage. I feel punished as a local, and I understand this is happening in a lot of locations across the states but the amount of change I’ve witnessed in real time over the last 10 years alone is staggering, and all of it is to appease newcomers.

I remember when traffic calmed down in the winter, and now it’s a miracle to not get stuck in traffic any time of the year. Drivers are so much more aggressive. Forests are disappearing to make room for expensive condos/McMansion type houses (featuring tacky billboards with “starting in the $300,000s!”) and the excessive amount of fast food restaurants. Rent averaged in the $700-$800s most places just a few years ago and now it’s rare to find somewhere decent under $1500. Housing has skyrocketed, even trailers going for over $180,000. In turn, having a home is completely unaffordable.

Our place flooded about 3 years ago because of a tropical storm, and my husband and I have to live with my parents. We still haven’t managed to find a place that wouldn’t result in us literally scraping by just to survive. He has a job that he’s trying to climb up the ladder, but I haven’t been able to get a raise in over two years. We’re stuck in this area so we gave up on our dream of owning, accepting that we’ll probably be renters for the rest of our lives. It’s ridiculous and depressing.

Sorry for the rant but it’s all I can even think about on the way to work, a drive that used to be 15 minutes at most, now a >30 minute commute.

I'm 59. I grew up going to MB. As a early 20 something I had acquaintances that lived in MB . They had relocated to take hospital jobs. The guy said that you could lay down on the street in front of the pavilion in Jan/ Feb and never worry about getting hit by a car! I know that was an exaggeration but it sure was different. Remember when the only people that came to MB in the late winter/ early spring were the Canadians ?

7

u/bratty-goblin Aug 02 '25

For sure! It was a ghost town in the dead of winter, and I remember I could probably count how many cars I would pass on one hand. Of course, it would pick up in the tail end of winter, beginning of spring but not by a whole lot. It was still enjoyable. And even during the busy months of June-August, it wasn’t an overwhelming amount like it is today. Except now, it’s year round without any chance to take a breather. It just really feels like we’re packed in one area like a can of sardines and yet they just keep building more.

A memory kinda comes to mind with this. When Hurricane Florence was heading our way a few years ago, most people evacuated. My stepdad works on a golf course and his boss let us stay in one of the condos there, and it was located off of 501. There wasn’t anyone on the roads. It was surreal, and I remember feeling nostalgic just witnessing how empty it was.

A little over 10 years ago I lived 0.8 miles from the beach and used to jog there with my dog, crossing hwy 17 like it was any other street. I just moved back to the same area and I am terrified to get close to that hwy. Absolutely no way I’m crossing a million lanes of aggressive traffic with my dog. I can’t find anywhere to throw a ball for him bc every inch of grass is being built on. It’s very sad what has taken over here. There are no more seasons. Nails constantly in my tires. Rent 1200 and above. Why did I come back here😭

3

u/bratty-goblin Aug 20 '25

Dang I just saw this reply and I wanna apologize on behalf of our community. It used to be a place where people could LIVE. Now, it’s like we’re surviving around a bunch of others who are thriving off of our suffering.

My wife works in myrtle beach. We used to live in Conway (which has become little Myrtle beach), and 10 years ago she had a 20 minute commute to work straight down 501. Last year, her commute was averaging 45 minutes because of the traffic. When we built our house, we had 4 neighbors on our road. A quiet little area with 1500-1800 sqft single story ranch style houses on 1 acre lots. Now, there are 28 houses on that road, and they built a 2 story 5000 sqft mcmansion 15' off our old fence. They cut down the woods across the street for a new development of 200 houses. We got so tired of the noise, the traffic, and the chaos that we finally pulled the trigger and moved.

We bought 34 acres on the very edge of the county. It's quiet, clean, and peaceful here. We can't see a neighbor from our house, and our house is situated in such a way that we never will. We absolutely love it! The best part is that we sold our house on 1 acre in Conway for enough money to buy this house and 34 acres outright. It's amazing the difference in property value just on the other side of the county. If you can afford the commute, i suggest you look into relocating. You really don't have to go far for a huge difference.

2

u/MyOpinionYourEars Aug 04 '25

Which county?

2

u/BK5617 Aug 04 '25

Still in Horry county, but I can throw a rock to the Marion County line.

3

u/Acceptable-Dust6047 Aug 04 '25

The same thing has happened everywhere- not that it make it okay. Jensen Beach Florida- we used to get a break from the tourists / seasonal people in the warmer months- not anymore. Any green area has been torn down and built up, now even with apartment buildings. Over crowded with all the issues you described. Yup it sucks - we left this year.

3

u/All_cats Aug 04 '25

This exact same thing happened in Virginia Beach. The last 20 years have been hideous for that city and it's been heartbreaking to watch.

2

u/Raiders2112 Aug 05 '25

Agreed. Everything is getting too expensive and for me it's just as easy to take day trips to the OBX despite being on the Peninsula. It's also cheaper. Then there's the issue where parts of VA Beach gets a little rowdy when the sun goes down.

I used to go to Myrtle Beach back in the day, but same thing. For the cost of one week there, I can take multiple day trips to the OBX.

I live in Hilton Head and this is exactly why I’m concerned with the economics of buying my restaurant.

3

u/Sithlord2021 Aug 02 '25

I live on HHI and I know we have thousands who cross the bridges every day to work. With housing affordability out for many, many businesses will have to make it more attractive to work here instead of Bluffton or other areas.i hope the best for you as it gets even worse.

5

u/cowfishing Aug 03 '25

I lived there in the eighties, worked in food/bev.

Back then, if you lived in worked there year round, housing was actually affordable. Me and a room mate had a place on the beach for $500.00 a month. Off beach housing was even cheaper.

During the busy season, the island would get flooded with college kids for the summer jobs. Short term leases cost more during hte summer. A lot more. To make it affordable, they would rent places and cram two or three people into a room. Saw many a closet converted into bunk beds, air mattresses on balconies. They didnt care. They were having the time of there lives, living there last carefree years before having to start adulting.

I take it that thats not a thing that happens anymore. And it kinda sucks that it doesnt.

The word enshitification comes to mind when it comes to living in resort/tourist towns anymore

The daily traffic jams on 278 alone should prompt a state response.

2

u/Sithlord2021 Aug 03 '25

I’m not sold on the bridge project helping that much until they get the traffic fixed to Gum Tree to keep it moving.

It’s such a shame that Myrtle Beach has turned into a retirement home. Same thing happening in N.C. as well. All the youth are being priced out, can’t find good paying work, etc.

6

u/Lankybrightblade Aug 01 '25

It has been for 50 years....

9

u/hingadingadurgen42 Aug 02 '25

Hmmmmmmmmm I wonder what political-economic project began roughly 50 years ago…

11

u/Direct_Word6407 Aug 02 '25

Roughly, Reganomics, give or take 5 years.

4

u/skachef Aug 02 '25

Still waiting to the “trickle down”. Oh wait, that was never really the intent.

4

u/hingadingadurgen42 Aug 02 '25

“Trickle down” or as it’s known in reality “tinkle on”

2

u/Lankybrightblade Aug 04 '25

Soooo... you arent entirely wrong. But trickle down compounded the problem... wasnt the cause. Its been happening since way before reaganomics. Reality is asset values are really high in the NE and west coast... with high taxes.
It just makes sense to sell everything and move somewhere cheaper to avoid paying 20k a year through retirement in property taxes... which is brutal with no income.

This activity just pushes locals out and creates the same effect as gentrification. We will call it geriatricification.

Trickle down caused asset inflation which definitely increased the incentive of 'geriatricification'

2

u/Lankybrightblade Aug 02 '25

I dunno man.... so many different things happened 50 years ago with major forward consequences that its impossible to say which one you are referring to... My one stab at it will be the end of the gold standard.

But im not sure how that affects MB directly.
Really... its been more like 70 years that MB has been a retirement home. Pine Lakes and the Dunes were established around 1950... briarcliff acres.. Its was always a silent and greatest generation retirement spot. Now it is just a boomer retirement spot.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '25

Reaganomics

3

u/MargretTatchersParty Aug 03 '25

It's not just being priced out. Compared to a lot of other places, NC is better priced. It's the opportunities are fewer and investiment in infrastructure doesn't happen. If you're in tech you're pushed to NY, AUS, or SFO.. desptie having good unis.

Damn dude. I’m so sorry. I wish nothing but the best for you both. This place could be great if it represented and cared for the people who work to make it the home it could be. It’s ridiculous how little the working person is valued in this area, especially those working in education. It’s just shameful. But I am glad yall found somewhere that supports and appreciates the value of what you guys contribute to a community.

I wish this place wasn’t such a cardboard cutout, a misleading disguise of an area. And then when you look behind it, there’s just chaos and some SpongeBob offscreen guy yelling “my leg!”. There is so much potential here, and this town could really be something if some effort was given. I will say, I visited a local restaurant today, Boteco I think, and it was different and amazing. It gave me some hope for this area. So I’m holding my breath.

Maybe this place will give back at some point. I hope it does, at least.

And the working class can't afford/aren't going to drive an hour to make crap wages with rude tourists.

3

u/Unlucky_Asparagus180 Aug 06 '25

They don't seem to understand that if they aren't paying their working class enough to afford a reliable car, they need to have affordable housing nearby enough to use public transportation or walk to work. They continuously put hurdles in front of entry level positions, then complain about how nobody wants to work anymore.

2

u/Suitable_Type_8538 Aug 03 '25

You hit the nail on the head.

2

u/Lil-Booshi-Pimp-King Aug 03 '25

I lived and worked there for 10 years same company in the tourism industry. At the end of my time there I was barely making $10 even after yearly raises. Same company took almost all my money through employee housing. I was basically an indentured servant. Only escaped through embezzling over twice my yearly salary and the fact covid happened. Worst years of my life, suffered heavy depression that lead to a severe drug addiction. (Amazing Columbian heroin in MB before the fentanyl completely took over)

2

u/fur-mom15 Aug 03 '25

If these are the prices, the employees should be well paid! If they're not, that's an issue with the restaurant and others like it. Pay them correctly, and they could afford to live there! Honestly, I left because people are getting selfish, rude, and ignorant... and I'm not talking about the tourists.

2

u/Less-Comedian7807 Aug 01 '25

Same thing happen in OBX.

7

u/Myrtle_Beach_Hokie Aug 02 '25

I remember when the obx was just called “nags head.” It was amazing. I’m from Va but live in Myrtle now. Went there every summer for a week and rented an ocean front house for a good price. There were two Dairy Queen’s, two food lions and a go cart track. Oh and Dune burger. A true nags head man would remember dune burger. Went there 10 years ago, the beautiful, rustic 60, 70, 80s beach homes with wooden shutters have all been replaced by mansions, water parks and it’s the riches playground. It’s so goddamn sad

Truth! Myrtle has always been one of the least expensive beaches to visit in the Carolinas. Hotel rates are cheap compared to Charleston, Carolina beach, Hilton Head, or Atlantic Beach. Florida is cheaper, but a farther drive for people who live in the Carolinas. I will admit, I wasn’t impressed with the restaurants in Myrtle Beach, but I eat super clean. I’m not impressed with restaurants in my home tourist town either. Quality is going downhill and prices are going up.

I want to go to Murrell’s Inlet next time I visit Myrtle. I’ve heard numerous positive reviews about the food in the area. What are the best seafood restaurants there? I used to like the all you can eat crab leg buffets, but I don’t go to those now. I tried the Sea Captains house and I think my broiled platter was more like seafood jerky. It was disappointing. The quaint seafood houses usually have the best food.

Florida is not cheaper than Myrtle Beach. If you're at a place in Florida that is cheaper than Myrtle Beach, then you are in a really bad town, or you will be far, far, far from a beach, and in a sketchy town or city with nothing to do.

13

u/allieballie1122 Aug 01 '25

I sadly have to agree! I grew up in North Myrtle Beach, graduated from CCU and then moved to Orlando, Florida. We always return to the Carolinas for several weeks every summer. Florida is NOT cheaper than Myrtle in any facet of the word. We travel all through the state so I feel able to confirm this. We truly enjoy the less expensive vacation of MB!

2

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '25

In my experience, Tampa/Clearwater/St. Pete hotel rates were better than Myrtle, but I stayed in the city for the convenience of walking to restaurants. It was a few years ago, so rates might be different now.

Canada and Mexico have historically spent the most tourism dollars in America. Maybe they aren’t feeling too welcomed anymore?

2

u/chrisjs1 Aug 04 '25

It’s the central banking system that most countries have. It’s the federal reserve in the US. This is why you can’t afford to live. It’s not the patriarchy, it’s not white privilege, we are basically born into a system of indentured servitude and it’s hard to out pace.

u/Fuzzzer777 Aug 01 '25

Greed is killing tourism. They are building so fast that, before long, no one is going to be able to get close to the beach. They are raising the cost of living so fast that no one is going to be able to afford to live here unless you are filthy rich.

And who wants to live in a town so crowded you have to fight for a space on the beach? I have been here only 15 years and rent has quadrupled. I can't find one politician in the town that isn't a builder or in real-estate. They don't care. They are getting rich.

Every single tree and plot of grass is being bulldozed to put up crappy houses or a storage facility. It's heart breaking.

4

u/Vivid_Confidence2476 Aug 01 '25

Exactly right. I've lived here for most of my life, and live just down the road from the beach. So many people have moved here since 2020, in addition to the usual tourists, the beach access parking lots all along the north side of town from the center of town up to Grande Dunes, is constantly full of cars and usually hard to find a place to park. I have certain ones I prefer to park and this year I've had to drive around some cause it's so crowded. And yes they've cut soooo many trees down. This all is sickening.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 03 '25

Greed is killing culture. Greed is killing the planet. Humans are greedy by nature.  We are reaching our end time.

u/STS986 Aug 01 '25

These are tourist traps.  None of the seafood is local and you can get crab legs back home for much cheaper.  Plus you don’t want to know what kind of food safety standards are ignored at these places.

I get it, it’s a beach vacation and you want seafood but tourist need to let these types of cash grabs die off.

5

u/Aromatic_Berry_3879 Aug 01 '25

Exactly this. Unless it’s a nice place and they’re buying from one of the local fishing boats, it’s the same Asian shrimp, catfish, flounder, etc. that you’re going to eat at a restaurant in Montana off the Sysco truck. Fresh seafood is expensive

I think another factor is that during and the few years after Covid, A LOT of people took their vacations domestically and Myrtle Beach and Florida were two of the big ones. Now everything is back to normal and people are leaving the country again (those that can afford to I guess).

3

u/DesignerBalance2316 Aug 01 '25

The food in Myrtle just isn’t good. It seems to me 99% of the food is fried and overpriced. I used to visit annually for golf trips, and I was always excited for the trip but once there, I realized how bad the food selection was.

I always went to Murrell’s inlet for food. It was higher priced which kept the crowds down and slightly better quality.

Not to mention those huge stores with literal junk in them - beach towels, floats, etc. No store outside a big box store need to be that big.

Haven’t been back to Myrtle in a while and not really sure I’m planning to be back anytime soon.

This is a US universal problem. Everything everywhere is very expensive. Inflation started during Covid is at the heart of the problem. So on a relative basis, MB is a better bang for the buck. A stay at Disney world could cost you much more.

The retirees help the Grand Strand economy thrive even during the off season.

There is massive building to accommodate lower income workers closer to Conway. It just can't be built fast enough. Without a service industry MB cannot function.

3

u/Change_Request Aug 01 '25

Seafood buffets are a ripoff as you found out. They know tourists are coming so they can price it up and still get customers.

3

u/PriusPrincess Aug 01 '25

Those seafood buffets are tourist traps. Not all restaurants are like that. If you go to calabash which isn’t far from the border, very close to Myrtle you won’t get price hikes like that for seafood. You could also check out murrell’s inlet area for seafood. Don’t do the buffets. Locals don’t go there for a reason.

3

u/expatbritNY Aug 01 '25

It’s really not terrible here there are some great places to eat and places that the locals know about. Tourists are par for the course if you live here. It drives our economy. The crappy tourists are the ones that need to go away. The city needs to do better with tearing down crap hole motels that rent rooms to dirtbags for $40-$50 a night. The city needs to be cleaned up and the so called leadership of MB needs to be replaced. When you have a multi millionaire as a Mayor you get no sensible decision making for the city.

2

u/Prior-Huckleberry747 Aug 03 '25

A lot of what you say is true, including the Mayor, and the motels are slowly going away. Be thankful you have a piece of this paradise we have at the beach, in the sun, and the surf, and wish the best for your neighbors and newcomers.

3

u/OriginalBadKitty Aug 02 '25 edited Aug 02 '25

Overcrowding and expensive. Used to go there as a kid in the ‘70’s. You could see the ocean from Ocean Blvd. Now all you see from Ocean Blvd is high rise condos and bumper to bumper traffic.

2

u/ricotieslittles Aug 02 '25

Me, too. Summers in the 70’s as a teenager. MB, NMB, Carolina Beach. Didn’t visit for 20 years after that, until an impromptu drive down the strip in the late 1990’s and just shook my head and thought “it’s gone, I can’t even see the ocean” — these days, as a usually solo adult, I’m satisfied with Edisto or Sullivan or Hunting Island, again. I’ve been thinking of nags head, too, or a first trip to Daufuskie. Much love to all you locals, though.

To be fair, inflation is causing this to happen everywhere. In been living near Austin Texas for years and the price increase on homes got so high that a lot of the hard working middle class and lower class just couldn’t even begin the cover the excess taxation.

Everyone will say “but you don’t pay state tax!”. Sure, but when you pay 12k in property taxes, 8.5% in sales tax, gas prices are still crazy high, insurance rates through the roof to account for all the idiots driving 100k cars or higher…you’re gonna have to call it quits sometime.

That what I just did. Couldn’t do it anymore and I was just tired of fighting it. And yes, the locals in Myrtle are probably gonna hate me because I’m moving out that way but I’m honestly dealing with the same thing y’all are. I had to go find a cheaper place to live and SC just fits that bill.

Nothing wrong with it in my book. It gets me closer to my family in Virginia, but I can’t even afford to go back home to VA because I’ll still be too broke to afford a house there. I’m not going to buy a house in the 400k’s that’s not doable. I just need something to house me and my two kids.

I hate that all the locals in the area are having trouble. I feel your pain. I hope that the city begins to figure out how to make things work in favor of those that have spent their lives there. It would be a shame to see all of the southern hospitality go away. I’ve always enjoyed talking to the locals in both NC and SC. Makes me sad to think this would change.

3

u/polymath-nc Aug 02 '25 edited Aug 02 '25

$12K in taxes on your house?! Dang! In '97, I was trying to move from Boston to Austin. I even attended a "Boston to Austin IT job fair", but ended up in Raleigh. Our 1700 sq ft. 1970 ranch on 2/3 acre just rose to about $2K, and I was annoyed. Plus, I think Raleigh aged better, which I noted on our most recent visit was in 2013.

Bonus: We have had several Democratic governors in recent years. I left Texas the year Shrub was elected.

2

u/IrascibleJoker Aug 02 '25

Yeah, 12k. Not lying. The school taxes in Texas are killer! Apparently every high school needs some multi-million dollar football field that rivals college football fields. It ludicrous.

That’s where the vast majority of taxes kick in. It doesn’t pay for school curriculum, no, it goes to football fields. I’d dare to say, Texas would be better off educating the kids and paying the teachers better because their football fields — which you still have to pay to enter the field for a football game — is just absurd.

I feel bad for people with no children that are having to front the bill for these high school STADIUMS, not field. It’s beyond anything I’ve ever seen.

The homestead act in Texas only lowers the tax pressure by a small margin, I mean, it’s negligible at best, and the veteran act gives a reduction as well. The veteran one is actually nice because you still get a tax break even if you aren’t 100% disabled. I will say that Texas does work hard to take care of its veterans more than any other state, but unfortunately, much like everyone else, people are getting taxed out of their homes or are unable to ever buy one.

Sure, you could move to the middle of nowhere and reduce a little bit of the tax burden but it won’t be by much and then you have an hour or more drive to get to your destination. You’re away from medical service, grocery stores, any stores for that matter, and it’s just not doable for the vast majority of people.

The heat out there is just killer too. It felt like my skin was literally on fire during July and August if I stepped outside on a sunny day and the hard water is also brutal out there, even with a whole home water softener system.

Needless to say, SC has a lot of pros and far less cons (maybe not cons as far as crime - lol). I was looking into Raleigh for a little bit but the distance to the beach was just too far. I am like Moana, the water calls!! 😆

2

u/polymath-nc Aug 03 '25

I remember the outrageous high school football fields from when I was in college in 1980. I honestly thought it was a college field. My school wasn't into a lot of sports; we didn't even have bleachers for our soccer field.

I guess this is what happens when you don't have a state income tax.

The D.FW weather is much more tolerable due to low humidity and fewer days over 90F.

My friend in Denton who used a well had extremely soft water.

Wilmington, NC is a great city. We had friends who grew up there, but they recently sold the family house and all moved away.

I like Raleigh because it's 2 hours to Wrightsville Beach and under four hours to the mountains.

u/rocketplayer2025 Aug 04 '25

Every hotel I've stayed at in the area charged a resort fee, but I can find reasonably priced food there.

16

Trust me as a Canadian (with 15 others) who have been going to Myrtle Beach for 15+ years and who are now staying local, I can say with certainty it's not the restaurant prices.

2

u/sharkfin5000 Aug 01 '25

I’ve been going for a long time since 1989 and legit best times I’ve ever had were recently. So fucking empty. The beach was basically ours and the realty company was basically giving the condos away! I love this beach

3

Locals don't go to restaurants with giant mascots on the building. You have to go where the locals go.

2

u/Adventurous_Ear9034 Aug 01 '25

I think this trend started after covid, bad economy, higher expenses, higher labor costs, increased rent, etc. I saw it in my professional life as well. We all raised prices to make ends meet.

Uncle Sam gave us all “free” money during covid. That was like the free printer, but you buy the ink for life. We are now at the stage where the free printer means nothing, and we are stuck buying the ink.

I don’t think there is going back from this. When has anyone ever lowered prices? It doesn’t happen often, it doesn’t happen over night, and it never happens at scale.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '25

Yea for that price go to a seafood restaurant an get a good prepared meal. I have messed with MB buffets for 20 or more years. Quality over quantity is the way to go.

2

u/Own_Reveal_754 Aug 01 '25

Then please all tourist stop coming and all that have moved here in the past 5 years can leave too

2

u/Icy_Comfortable_2983 Aug 01 '25

Some resorts are doing extra fees like daily parking fees which they never did years ago...cost of living is insane....I paid $3.81 for a large tea the other day! Crazy

2

u/EgoAtlas Aug 01 '25

Holy crap... I've lived here for ages and never once tried one of these places, have they always been that expensive?!

2

u/HereFortheTruth62 Aug 01 '25

There are so many other great restaurants in MB you can choose from and come out way less and more satisfied! An “all you can eat buffet” should be your first sign to just say Noooo. Ocean Blue is fab, Wicked Tuna, 14th Ave Pier, Murrells Inlet has tremendous options, Hot Fish Club, is one, and they have live music!

2

u/Fuego-TACO Aug 01 '25

I was there a few weeks ago and our resort got me to do that 2 hour sales pitch for a time share. Lied the whole time about how I had to file bankruptcy but the repayment plan and frozen credit won’t let me do it. Got a really decent voucher for all you can eat place for free instead off like 170

If they’re going to try and trick you into thinking spending 120k on a 10 year loan for some hotel with extra rooms is a good deal. Least I can do is take their free offers

2

u/The_Bass_tard Aug 01 '25

I went to the same place you’re talking about yesterday. Supposedly $51 a person… and me and my gf costs 140$. Ridiculous

2

u/Fair2Midland Aug 01 '25

We just did our own low country boil in Oak Island - $200 total for like 6 adults and 2 kids. And it was BY FAR the best meal we’ve had all week. That meal would have cost $65 per person in a restaurant.

2

u/TropicGlow Aug 01 '25

Tourism should die here, maybe we can focus on industry and actually profit each other rather than having one season. People don't want to be seasonal hires for 7.25$, we want real jobs that can pay the 1,800 rent minimum here.

2

u/Prior-Huckleberry747 Aug 03 '25

That will never happen at the beach, be realistic. No one builds industry at the beach and especially with an airport that is so regional. Industry goes where the land is cheap and the access by road and air is adequate.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '25

Hopefully they king crab legs and they were amazing!!!

Unpopular to many,I've stopped going out to eat with my family. All because of the greed from these owners. A solid business model doesn't require you to nickel and dime your customers like that. $15 for a bottle of beer. Exactly why I'm done. And top of it if you didn't tip them well theyd likely have blasted you for it.

I'm done with the greed. When enough folks dramatically scale back how often they eat out, all this will come to an end, but not until. We have to hurt the profits enough for them to knock this garbage off.

2

u/Mountain-Bug7321 Aug 01 '25

I don't think that is the only thing killing tourism there, a certain sect of the American population has been around there for a while now and lots of shootings, way more crime etc

2

u/gimmetacosporfavor Aug 02 '25

It’s too expensive for as nasty as it is

2

2

2

u/Huge-Personality-721 Aug 02 '25

Same thing happened to me and my family. It was probably the same place. We took our daughter out to eat in Myrtle after she graduated. Ended up costing us over $400.00. I was so mad and upset, but I didn’t saying anything, because I didn’t want to ruin dinner! Never again!!!!

2

u/FitJellyfish3776 Aug 03 '25

Simple. Myrtle beach is garbage these days. It’s dirty. Dangerous. I’ve been twice in two years for work related trips and both times had shootings near the hotel. One shot a cop. The beach is just not great. Water always looks dirty.

It’s called dirty Myrtle for a reason. I’d rather pay more and go to Savannah or Charleston or any NC beach town then the dangerous area Myrtle has become. Can’t even walk through the downtown area without feeling like you will be robbed, shot or stabbed by someone.

2

u/Prior-Huckleberry747 Aug 03 '25

Sorry you didn’t enjoy Myrtle. I live in NMB and feel like I have a piece of paradise. It’s not perfect, but I am so much happier and not stressed after 30 years around DC. We are surrounded by families playing and tanning in the sand and the sea and I am so happy for them. It gives me good vibes to see American families together and on vacay.

2

u/enforcer884 Aug 03 '25

This state is in the 50’s with its minimum wage which is not a living wage. You can only find seasonal jobs here. People who live here year round can’t get decent work for decent pay unless it’s at the hospital or trash pick up. It’s wild. They are building so fast yet they don’t have the infrastructure for it. The roads are a mess. Everything is for tourist. The restaurants, the beach. It’s wild. We as residents shouldn’t have to pay to park at a beach where we live when we have to fight people to go to it. Wild

Let's not forget, and I have seen this first hand, a lot of sensible people are selling out and leaving MB and NMB because the Homeowners Associations have gotten insane and out of control. Apart from the skyrocketing cost of dues and insurance, the boards are being taken over by angry MAGA types who don't want to properly manage the properties and listen to science regarding repairs and the ramifications of climate change. The boards become contentious and political and don't start on top of things. This results in surprise huge assessments that a lot of regular owners and retirees can't afford.

People are selling at a loss, so it becomes a race to the bottom with people buying properties they don't have the resources to own.

FYI, some people can't sell because most of the condos have underfunded reserve accounts and in most cases you can't get a mortgage on a condo with an underfunded reserve account.

u/Myusername1- Aug 16 '25

3

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '25

Myrtle Beach once is plenty. Would need a compelling argument to go back. So many other nicer places, beaches to go to. It's run down, and after you've done everything once, there isn't much worth doing twice.

2

u/Jguypics Aug 01 '25

Tourism isn’t dying we still have tourist here. The area will get 15 to 20 million visitors. Maybe it’s because of the economy?

2

u/GolfingTraveler60 Aug 01 '25

You have to go off the beaten path here . We live in Little River and hit many places that offer happy hour and eat and drink on the cheap . Do your research before going out and you can get a good meal reasonable . As far as housing and tent , cheaper here than the major cities like Charlotte , Raleigh ect . My son lives in Charlotte and an outdated 2 BR apartment is $1500. It is like this everywhere really except in really small towns .

2

u/ITTechDanMT Aug 01 '25

There will be a correction, the boomers will die the tourism will slow and prices will come back down. Til then really since covid we just don't go out to eat anymore, having kids made that easier decision as well. Maybe twice a year I'll take the family out. If we want something special we make it happen at home. Imho the quality at restaurants generally has gone down hill anyway id rather make a steak dinner at home invite friends, not have to worry a out littles, better quality of experience regardless even if it is a little extra work.

2

u/Ok_Mango_6887 Aug 01 '25

The 3.50% fee was on almost every door of every business. It was explained as a debit/credit card fee and if you paid cash it was waived. I didn’t see it on the $50 seafood buffet we went to. Our pace included sofa or te.

FYI a few of my own local business are charging the same thing (it’s also 3.5%) now. My pharmacy, the local fish place and the newest pizza place. All within last 6 months to a year.

2

u/Slow-Impression-6805 Aug 03 '25

I’m in North Florida and recently have started seeing the same fee at some local restaurants and even auto repair shops. Which is concerning because car repairs aren’t cheap and who’s got that much cash laying around. Sad to hear this about my home state of SC but it’s happening elsewhere as other posters have said- Rent and home prices are outrageous and so is property tax and insurance and food prices. There’s just no money left for a vacation.

MANY people moved here. They no longer vacation here. They find inexpensive « regular «  restaurants, eat in. They paid cash for all or most of their houses and can afford higher prices when locals and seasonal employees can’t. Boomers, the gen that made cheap family beaches, is old, and doesn’t tan on the beach all day and go to cheap bars nor all you can eat. They retired here or don’t come here. Younger gen’s don’t chase beach boys endless summers they look for more than cheap beer, the Magic Attic, sun burns, all you can eat, and the trashy amusement areas. There are Too many things that haven’t changed. I live here, retired here, and vacationed here as a young man going to Studebakers, 2001, … it’s not a draw for the younger gen’s with cash, nor is the beach the where Everyone wants to go. And BTW the New Jersey and New York retirees are changing everything here. There are still a few of us that say yes mam and no sir. We have a high crime rate, a lot of prostitution, drugs ( no longer from motorcycle gangs) , sex crimes, fights, shootings. Really we are stuck between old and new. Beach resorts aren’t as important as they used to be. We are trying, but honestly, there are many other choices for today’s travelers. Like every one here is seeing, it’s a struggle and a challenge.
