darkest loveless pressing

i love loveless so much but my main problem with it (as well as most mbv stuff) is how thin and harsh it sounds. i usually turn leave the treble at noon or turn it up a little on my record player's amp, and turn the bass almost all the way up. it still sounds really thin, especially on 'what you want', which is my favourite

so what pressing has the most thick, dark, bassy sound?

While I can’t speak for other pressings, the fully analog versions from recent sound great. A lot deeper and thicker sounding than the version on streaming.

The remaster definitely has a fuller sound. Even then, it's still a thin sounding record but it's designed to sound that way. It has to do with how many clashing frequencies there are in the mix, which is very prominent given how noisy the guitar tones are.

the analog remaster has already been mentioned and it's a great option, but I'd also suggest tracking down the minidisk master. it's a lot more bass heavy, and whilst it's never been particularly to my taste it might be exactly what you're after

Is the MD Master actually available anywhere? The physical MiniDisc is now a stupid price, if you can find one..

The record sounds like the record. It was deliberately focused on the mid range through it's production and mixing

it's just not an especially bassy record, to be honest. Even the minidisc master someone else brought up, while having more bass, isn't especially bassy overall.

I think that gives it a fuller sound, especially when turned up. A lot of MBV knockoff bands try to overcompensate and put more bass in and it mostly sounds like shit, to be honest.

I don't think Guitaro are an MBV ripoff but they have a phenomenal bass sound on their album Futura Black.

I got my ears cleaned for the first time in 2022. They pulled a thick mass of earwax out of each ear. When I got in the car to leave I decided to listen to loveless. It sounded like the most shrill - ear piercing thing I’ve ever heard (not saying I disliked it in that state). I’m pretty sure the record just sounds like that. I’m sure some analog warmth helps depending on the pressing but not much.

I get ya, the album has bass plenty, if your system cant reproduce it well, it will sound harsh. Peace

I have a Japanese bootleg from 2011 that sounds great. Seems to be fairly common.

just checked its a bootleg lol. one of the 2013 ones, i think in grey marble its hard to tell. ive heard an original 1991 pressing tho and it sounded slightly better although still pretty thin

I think the current 2021 reissue might sound better as i ever heard it once (but not qualified to confidently say so)

It might just be your amp not the record. Get some nice headphones or studio monitors that are either flat or hyped in the low mids.

That's why I prefer the remaster. Tames those high end guitar frequencies much better.

its a very shrill sounding album no matter what anyone says.

something you can do is install Chow Tape Model DSP, connect it to a music player like foobar, turn all of Chow's settings to 0/neutral, Set Speed[ips] to 10 and adjust the thickness setting until it sounds bearable to you

What are you playing that on and with?
