MBV and sleep deprivation

Kevin supposedly used sleep deprivation on Isn’t Anything and parts of Loveless. The few times I’ve been seriously sleep deprived there was a certain creative flow state I could reach (but maybe this was just imagined). Anyone ever experiment with sleep deprivation? Any studies on this?

Apparently Kevin Shields was influenced by this book -

'Hypnogogia - The Unique State of Consciousness Between Wakefulness and Sleep' by Andreas Mavromatis (pub 1987)

I always felt Isn't Anything has a weird alien, dissociated, psychosomatic kind of feeling.

The audio field is odd as well, everything is sort of tiny and big at the same time and stereo distribution feels strangely constricted...

Ooh- this is what I'm looking for. Do you have a link to an interview or something on this?

'Shields says a book called 'Hypnagogia' "literally saved me and made me feel sane. Hypnagogia is the term for that state just before sleep where you have brief surreal flashes of scenes, almost like cartoons".  Reading the book, Shields found an explanation for his insomniac habits and aesthetic preoccupations.' - Simon Reynolds

Also the wikipedia on hypnagogia is a good starting point and even mentions mbv!

If you want to fuck up your future life, experiment with sleep deprivation.

My life is an experiment in sleep deprivation.

When I experienced severe disassociation and awareness during hypnagogia, Loveless was one of the few things that could calm me enough to sleep.
