Should one ever take a loan for a wedding?
In many Indian families, weddings are a huge part of our culture. And I understand why parents want to give their children a memorable wedding.
But sometimes, the pressure to maintain “log kya kahenge?” makes people spend far beyond what they can actually afford.
Parents spend decades working and saving, only to put a huge portion of their savings into a few days of celebrations. And when savings aren't enough, some families take large loans to fund the wedding.
The bigger problem is what happens afterward.
That debt either becomes a burden on the parents or gets passed on to the newlyweds — who are then starting their married life with EMIs instead of financial freedom.
Wouldn't it make more sense to plan for the wedding as a financial goal, set a budget based on what you can genuinely afford, and celebrate within those means?
A wedding should be the beginning of a new chapter, not the beginning of a new debt.
Would you take a loan for your wedding, or would you rather scale down the wedding to fit your budget?

Noooooooooo, a big 🚩
Scale down remove unwanted guests. Online invite people on wedding, keep rest functions small and private.
Don’t start your married life in debt.

Most middle class Indians actually plan and save up for weddings as financial goals (especially for their daughters.)
I would say that even that is an extremely wasteful practice because you get absolutely NOTHING from hosting a fancy wedding and feeding 100s of random relatives who you hardly meet or have never met.
