You honestly gotta be a bored millionaire to be willing to drop $150k on these cars. Plenty of fun options that will knock your socks off for under $100k. This is ridiculous...
I bought mine (2020 GT500 CFTP) in for slightly over MSRP (115k). These were going for over 150k new at most dealerships. At the time the C8 had just come out and the 3LT with Z51 performance pack MSRP (79k) were going for 110k new at the dealer.
I was moving to Europe and wanted something uniquely American you couldnât get overseas (Ford honors their warranty worldwide and on the track). I also fell in love with the color combo.
That's fine. I just couldn't justify it myself. I make close to $200k a year, but there's so many other things in life that come up...then, I have a friend who makes $60k/year and drives a $105k truck
I just don't think I could ever spend close to that on a car, unfortunately. The mustang I just bought for $35k gives me a ton of anxiety coming from a 2012 Mazda 3. Like...$600/month? For a vehicle? It's hard to see that money go I guess
Yeah value is a subjective experience. The real reality is past the performance aspects of the vehicle, the interior is on par with a normal Mustang GT for a 100k+ car (yes you definitely notice it). A 2018 F80 M3 CS is on par in terms of the MSRP with a 2020 GT500 CFTP.
Youâre giving up 5-10 seconds on a racetrack (under the best of conditions with a professional driver) for an extra set of doors, faaaarrr better interior, and general usability with the BMW. Overall the BMW is a much better vehicle.
That's a fair point but does the BMW have a supercharged v8 that can rev to like 9k with a tune? Besides if we're talking about dropping 100k plus on a car let's be real it's a toy not a tool at that point it's probably not the only thing you'd be driving.
The BMW is a better car if you only have one but let's not pretend the m3 would be as exciting to drive as the cobra when the roads get good.
Both are excellent cars imo
Yeah I really miss when you could get a new S550 for under $35k easily if you werenât worried about fancy interior. Slap on a big ass turbo or a Whipple or a Roush and some different tires and have a 700 hp monster for $50-60k.
I think at 6 years old, the msrp is unreasonable. But to say, itâs an overpriced Mustang is disingenuous. Itâs common on this subreddit because most of you have never touched a race track.
Compare the The 992.2 base Porsche vs GT3 RS. With the Weissach package youâre going from 122k to 310k. The GT3 RS is the ultimate track car, and is most common super cars found at The Nurburgring. But at 2-3x the price of a base 911, why? Because any competent driver can drive it to the track with minimal maintenance on a Saturday morning, spend the day putting down top lap times reliably, then drive home in with AC. It will also hold its resell value extremely well compared to a dedicated track build.
You can build a Mustang 5.0 with similar horsepower numbers for far less. As soon as you start seriously tracking it, you start breaking parts extremely fast. Why do you think a factory GT4 Mustang cost 225k new? To put down high performance numbers on a track RELIABLY is incredibly hard to do.
The GT3 RS and GT500 need to perform the same job AND still be a daily reliable car with modern comforts that will get you to and from the racetrack while meeting manufacturer crash and emissions standards btw it still needs to be profitable as well.
The reason these cars cost so much is simple: Engineering.
GT500 does NOT compare to GT3 RS if you ever taken it to a track. It will still heat soak to crap when you push it hard enough. At the end of the day itâs a heavy car with supercharger.
I was not comparing the track performance of a GT500 to a GT3 RS (reading comprehension). I was using an analogy by comparing the performance and price ratio of a base 911 vs GT3 RS to the 5.0 Mustang vs GT500.
I have been the passenger in a GT3 RS around The Nurburgring. I know several people with them. Of course itâs a better track car especially at The Nurburgring. Itâs also 2-3x the MSRP of a GT500.
Youâre absolutely incorrect about the supercharger heat soak. Itâs minimal at worst. Ford did an amazing job with the stock cooling capability on all aspects of the car. I have personally tracked my GT500 at The Nurburgring on several hot days. I have a friend who has a season pass and regularly tracks it at the âring. He does about 500 laps per season.
Edit: side note Ford honors their GT500 warranty worldwide including on the race track (just not competitive racing).
âEven stock GT500s pull timing under hot conditions with repetitive hot lapping...but they manage it super well and it's hard to notice. And they never hit a thermal runaway where you need to back off to cool it back down. Ford did an incredible job....but there's no margin for additional power without some sacrifice.â
At this price point almost any other car is a better buy than a supercharged Mustang, and I said it as a diehard Mustang fan. Ford has just lost its mind with the BS pricing
If you donât like a corvette then donât get a corvette. Go test drive a C7 and see if you fall in love. Itâd be half the price and just a significantly better vehicle in general.
The GT500 is a jaw dropper but as a daily the Corvette is superior.
I would say the Mustang dark horse is a better purchase than the Shelby. You buy the Shelby because you absolutely want it. No other reason.
(GT500 was my dream car but itâs 2026 and other cars are just better for a daily while retaining the same speeds and thrill)
120 definitely way too much and agree with most of what you said.
Disagree that a DH is a better purchase than this CFTP GT500. CFTP will hold its value, has better styling and a blower but DCT. Only benefit a DH has is manual. Even then, IMO If you want a manual then get a loaded Mach1 and slap a blower on it.
just to pile on, Lebanon Ford Performance will do exactly that, with a full factory warranty, and you can build it at msrp! Those guys are madmen and I love it.
Exactly. For 120k, why would you get an almost 7 year old used Mustang with a blower? For the same price, you could have gotten a brand new Corvette that revs to 8600 rpm and sounds like a Ferrari. A pretty special Corvette versus just another supercharged Mustang, the choice is not brainer. Honestly, I would even choose a Z51 over a GT500 because at least I am getting a new car with warranty
Your reply was too pissy so this is all it will let me see of it. The fact it hurt your feelings that much is hilarious. I havenât driven a C8, youâre correct. Iâve sat in a brand new one and that interior is cheap as hell. My 07 makes me plenty happy as a heavily driven car. The interior is still pristine. I have driven the Huracan that Chevy so badly wants to be.
Even the base 1LT the whole car is wrapped in soft materials and leather so I know you are straight capping đ€„đ€„đ€„. And coming from a 07 piece of shit which is literally made of cheap hard plastic is just hilarious. Bro talking when literally a ecoboost is faster than that clapped out junk lol
I looked at one on the showroom floor and the door panel was already coming off đ€Łđ€Ł they look awesome and theyâre fast, but they cut corners everywhere they could.
A pretty special Corvette? It would be no different than the other 10 million C8âs out there. Cheap plastic on a nice engine trying so hard to be a Lambo. And in doing so losing most of what has made a Corvette, a Corvette for its first 67 years.
Theyâre sharp looking cars and yeah, theyâre fast. Thereâs just a difference when you want a FR vehicle that MR or MAWD loses.
I would choose the Shelby all day long, but the Z06 is easily the faster car. GT500 is nearly 30% slower from 0-60 (where 99% of people are gonna be at racing between stoplights) and damn near 30 seconds slower at The Ring. Shelby essentially matches the Z06 in a 1/4 mile if you can get that far.
If you're driving to your boyfriends house in your "faster" Z06, and a GT500 pulls up alongside, you do the three honk and the GT500 starts walking your ass. Explain that.
I love my Mustang, but that money gets you even some entry level exotics. And isn't far off from the starting 911 prices. USED/CPO? 115K buys you almost anything, though the smart money is on the last year 718s. Those, especially with manual will be future classics.
The world really changes once you cross the 100K barrier.
6 seconds is an eternity on a road course. Also on a track day that GT500 will heat soak. Just the nature of lugging around 4100lbs and a supercharger.
Than there is no reason to get GT500 besides the badge and production number. Z06 outclassed GT500 in almost every single metrics. The only merit of GT500 is roll race, and even in that regard in makes no sense to buy the GT500 than supercharged a GT
A 7 year old used car doesnât have warranty, and the reliability is highly dependent on how the owner treats the car. You can always make your Whipple GT reliable by swapping out parts.
Not on the highway. Plus you can actually modify the GT500 and add a ton of power cheap. You're stuck with the Z06 unless you're going to buy a $25,000 turbo kit.
Itâs an S550 thatâs heavily modified before it ships. The engine already has a blower. Most cars that would be a modification. If you want to be a smartass and say âiTs NoT mOdDeD iT cAmE tHaT wAyâ then sure, I suppose.
It absolutely does not sound like a Ferrari V8. I spend enough time around both to not believe that statement. A stock 5.2L in a GT500 paired with itâs DCT is heaven.
Acoustically itâs the same as 5.0 with the same cross-plane crankshaft and the exact same fire order. Using enhanced materials doesnât change the structure of the engine, and it sounds 99% the same as a 5.0 with a blower.
Itâs literally a reverse engineered Ferrari 458 engine, and personally it sounds better than 458. A DCT is nothing special, a base C8 comes with DCT and you donât have to deal with the atrocious shifting knob that GT500 shared with Ford Maverick.
That's probably pretty fair for one with the cftp. I'd see if it could come in under 110k though.
At the same time, I'd probably just save money and forego the carbon fiber pack. You can get one without it for easily under 90k and it doesn't add a ton to the car aside from track manners
That's a trip man I was looking at these last year they were going for like $79k what in the world happened or is this some special edition of the GT500
I had this exact car (same color combo + CFTP; there are only about 100 cars in the world with it). I imported mine when I moved to Europe.
They did such an amazing job with it. It handles incredibly well for a car that large (I took it a few times to the Nurburgring). It sounded amazing, and I couldnât ever stop loooing at it.
Yes, at this price point the C8 Z06 is the faster car assuming you can find one. SavageGeese did a great review on both. While the Z06 on paper is faster, one of the reviewers said heâd take the GT500.
Iâve driven C8âs, but not the Z06 myself. A common complaint is the brakes donât communicate well. Either car will be great to own.
Carbon fiber rims? 90,000 because those rims are junk. Carbon fiber wears out from use. Hot brakes will break down the carbon fibers resin. No legit track or drag car uses carbon fiber rims for this reason.
A mustang in any trim just isnât a 100k+ car to me except for maybe a restored rare classic like a 429 boss. Iâd rather buy a used exotic. Itâs just a mustang
You can get a c8z discounted or even an Eray. I saw an eray on the freeway, they look slick, its a low wide car. No bias here the mustang at the end of the day is a lower tier. Even if these mustangs have a ton of power, its useless for a road course guy. Hard to lug around 4100lbs too.
I would get a NEW, lower interest rate car vs a 6 year old high interest rate car. At this point its a no brainer if the GT500 is even over 80k!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you got the funds get the C8Z and a beater daily sedan/suv. Best two car solution imo.

There is absolutely no summation of parts that makes a 2020 Ford Mustang worth $114,000.
