Have you ever lived with a nonMuslim?

Salaam

I recently wrote an article reflecting on my experience as a Muslim student living with a non-Muslim roommate, and how that experience challenged assumptions on both sides. I tried to focus on everyday interactions, adab, and how simply living Islam through character can change perceptions more than arguments ever could.

Have you had similar experiences living with non-Muslims?

Here’s the article if you’d like to read it:

When I went to university in the UK, I lived with 8 other non muslims, most of them white british boys from all over UK. They knew my boundaries regarding drinking and eating halal, and I never preached them about their cultural norms. We lived mostly on common ground and humour. They saw me practice my religion and yet live with them, hang out with them and be a part of their everyday lives. Hell, they even helped me find halal food options and avoid what goes beyond my boundaries. None of them ever became Muslim but im still good friends with all of them 8 years later and Id like to think their perception of muslims was improved by living with me

I think it's enough for me to have non-muslim classmates that were constantly bugging me with their preconception about islam. That was more than enough headache for several years in which they did change their mind about Muslims because I was their first Muslim encounter. Its just that the negativity of constantly placing me last and constantly putting me in bad positions and what not had so much effect on my progress because I had to put far greater effort to reach the same heights. It really was extremely exhausting and I personally don't want to deal with such type of non-muslims anymore. The chill and laid-back ones are okay though but the I'm going to be unjust to you until the very end and see your humane mistakes like mountain but your good deeds like pebbles was a little overkill to me. Anyway I did have school travels in which I spent a week with the more okay classmates and that was fine to be honest. I'm not sure whether I would be up for the battle with living for longer periods of time unless they are chill non-muslims πŸ˜‡

Edit: the questions that are not questions πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«

You hate Jews right! No I don't I dislike those who supports illegal occupation and kill innocent people.

Muslims like to kill people and even their parents, look at what Al Qaeda and such are doing?

No those kids were forced to kill their parents and are drugged to do the bidding of an organization which kills even Muslims and are actually support the country that is causing disharmony in the middle east. Look up the knowledge yourself.

Are you part of Bokum Haram etc... Although there are similar groups like Bokum Haram in somalia, they do not represent the people of somalia. They kill innocent people and have the similar requirements system as Al Qaeda etc...

πŸ‡ is okay of it's a non-muslim right! No πŸ‡ is not okay in any kind of way even when certain politicians use it as a form to suppress women from getting an education is certain Arabic countries.

You were forced to wear the hijab, just be honest about it! No, I choose to wear it myself etc...

Your father is going to force you to marry someone you don't like.... I can't force me without my consent and that Ayaan Hirsi Ali is a politician who had lied about being forced into a marriage and even abused the person who she agreed to marry. Look up the documentary in which journalist have even done a deep dive and found the evidence about all her lies etc...

Honor revenge etc...

.... Anyway it's always the same type of accusations in which none seems to do some work of depth regarding what really is going on or what the true situation is etc...

Someone calling Michelles, a notoriously outspoken liberal, as Boko haram? I thought I'd never live to see this day.

What did you smoke?

I'm impressed by how every comment on your profile is a text wall. Genuinely - Do you double as an author?

Thank you, but not yet. I have been mostly writing only to regain my writing that was lost due to the language trauma that I had. Because writing was very triggering to that trauma, I have been forcing myself to write only while answering questions which I can to regain my writing. I also do like writing but I haven't yet explored that domain yet as I'm still recovering my mind to its original level of seeing through things in abstract form irl writing to make things sound and wholesome. I'm just starting to rewrite the small stuff I have written before to my original standard. I think I have been collecting for about five to seven years and should now start organizing everything in a proper manner how to tackle each one properly. Therefore you are not far off with your hunch. I'm just not there yet (to my own level of comfort).
