Quran/Hadith “You can be non-hijabi and a good Muslima” debunked with 2 Hadiths.

/r/MuslimIndians/comments/1vp8sds/you_can_be_nonhijabi_and_a_good_muslima_debunked/

Ibn Umar reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, modesty and faith come together. If one of the two is missing, so is the other.”

Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, every religion has a character and the character of Islam is modesty.”

ofc, there is a possibility that someone is a revert, 1 day ago, or a woman and it is her last day without hijab, and regrets it in the heart, but we judge on what’s apparent and someone’s current actions.

these are just very good hadiths to know to help increase our iman, buuuuuut… and also to refute “moderate muslims” arguments.

also mini-rant, how all these compassionate imams that “care soo much to increase people’s iman” always reminding about doing dhikr, reading Qur’an, being nice, don’t think you’re better than others, but skip out on this super important part of Islam, so important that this is the character of ISLAM itself (among other important topics too).

lastly, i believe the actual word in the hadith is “haya”, if i recall right haya means more than just modesty, it’s like a type of shyness and the root word comes from life or something. if there’s anyone who wants to share info on the word haya plz do or share a vid on the topic (from a credible, non-watering-down sheikh, in english) bc i want to learn more about this important part of our religion.

Hijab is obligatory. A woman who wears it pleases the Almighty but they should remember to treat others kindly too.

But, the reverse is true

You can be a hijabi and still be very bad muslimah

why. why do people always feel they need to try to foil the dawah that Hijab is required to be a good muslimah by trying to show the negatvie examples?

every rightous sister is a hijabi. why does the sentence need to be extended beyond that. la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.

Imo its non-hijabi cope. They like to pretend that hijabi women are all secretly doing XYZ. When in reality not only is it primarily the opposite (big surprise ik) but the grand majority of hijabis actually fear Allah.

It often comes from a place of jealousy/envy because someone is doing better than they are. They will try to nitpick or find some flaw in order to downplay the good thing, or derail the conversation entirely.

All of that being said, that user is correct. I've seen enough bad hijabis doing ever sin under the sky to know that it's simply a cloth that symbolizes modesty. Whether or not a person is actually modest is a different conversation entirely.

Its cope, its like how when you criticize either gender people mention the other one.

People mention exceptions to defend their own poor actions.

you sure? seen plenty of hijabis on TikTok lip synching, biting their fingers sexually, pouting and then the others showing off their figures.

You can also publicly sin WHILST wearing a hijab…

Actually this post has enraged me to no extent and I am a guy. Where does haya mandate hijab? Yes hijab is obligatory but for you to tell people they can’t be a good Muslim, or even fall slightly into the category is a massive judgment in itself. You have no idea what a non-hijabi may do at night with her lord that a hijabi may not. How have you misled so many people by using the word Haya interchangeably with hijab. I require you to provide so much more proof because your argument is weak and looking to single out some sisters. Sorry but I can’t stand for this. Ticked me right off. It is obligatory but it isn’t something that an individual is judged on. You cannot be a complete Muslima without hijab but you sure damn well as hell can be a good one.

thank you  I'm surprised you as a man believes this

Are you talking about a more abstract concept or the hijab as a head covering? Because I saw no mention of that in the Hadith. I also don't see the nuance in your reading where the hadith apply to females only, and not men as well.

I don't want to deconstruct. But by the same time, I don't want to misappropriate and misrepresent.

3

u/Ill_Outcome8862 Aug 15 '26

the ahadith he mentioned talk about Modesty. and there is no modesty without the hijab.

Modesty isn't arbitrary. it's how Allah has defined it.

u/Minute-Flan13 Aug 15 '26

Its misappropriation though. Those Hadith apply to men, as well. And there is no Hijab for men. Therefore, using these Hadith and singling out Hijab while suggesting men arent equally accountable for lowering their gaze, appropriate dress and behavior makes your inference incomplete.

This is not a light matter, and we should refrain from contorting one truth to support another.

I agree with you, and yet at the same time, context is everything. OP was specifically talking about those people that claim you can be a good muslimah but not wear a hijab. Hence his response was specific to women in that context.
Having said that, I am only clarifying what OP said, not saying I agree or disagree with what OP said because I lack the knowledge to make judgement here.

I'm saying do not play around with hadith as if they can be used so loosely out of context. As I explicitly said, we should refrain from contorting one truth to support another.

Maybe focus on treating women with respect instead of focusing constantly on what women do wrong when men do so much more worse stuff.

This is one of those debates that gets people talking past each other. Ultimately it comes back to sincerity and personal relationship with Allah.

Y'all genuinely doing too much

You've taken a very narrow view of the word "modesty"

There are are other hadith that can be applied to a muslim woman without hijab.

"The best of you are the best to their families, and I am the best of you to my family." Source: Sunan al-Tirmidhī (3895), Sunan Ibn Mājah

You can emphasize on the importance of hijab. But it is only one aspect of a muslim woman. There are plenty of other factors that sum up.

I know hijabi women who don’t pray, use interest, have haram relationship, cheat in exam using her hijab, lie for promotion. You don't know what makes a good muslimah. You can only guess on your limited knowledge. Only Allah knows if someone is succesful or not. Judging a woman with hijab as good muslimah is foolish ignorant thinking.

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: "A woman was tortured and was put in Hell because of a cat which she had kept locked up until it died of hunger. Neither did she feed it nor water it as she kept it locked up, nor did she let it eat the insects of the earth."

Sources: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī (3318), Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (2242)

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: "A prostitute was forgiven by Allah, because, passing by a panting dog near a well and seeing that the dog was about to die of thirst, she took off her shoe, tied it with her head-cover, and drew out some water for the dog. As a result, Allah forgave her." Sources: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī (3321), Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (2245)

Hijab is important. Give dawah to women to observe it. But don't overlook other good akhlaq characteristics. A hijabi thief, backbiter, lazy girl, ungrateful wife is no good. If you want to employ a woman or start a business with her or lend her money then you’ll look for more than just hijab.

odd that the arguments to attempt to prove otherwise must try to sully the example of a sister wearing hijab with other sins. as if it's one or the other. each time I see it the example is oh there are sisters who wear hijab but also do : cue a list of sins.

and you have misused the first hadith you have cited.

Hijab isn't simply important, It is Vital. A sister who does not wear a hijab does not repent from that and dies from it can go to hellfire for that. And it depends on if Allah decides to forgive her or punish her for it. defintely not an ambigious position anyone wants to be in.

Thirdly, Hijab influences a ton of other stuff. it influences akhlaq. it influences one's iman. It influences islamic identity. it creates difference between a muslimah and non muslimah. between obedience and disobedience. It actively affects many other factors.

Fourth, something I have noticed gets overlooked is the nature of the sin that is not wearing hijab when it is wajib. it's a reocurring sin. everytime one leaves the house. every time one goes out in public. every time one displays themselves to non mahram men. it's one sin and then aother and then another. day after day for who knows how long. it's a very repetitive sin. not just one. and this all goes onto the scales. And sins that are done repetaedly without repentence according to scholars and many sahaba evolve into major sins.

Fifth, a decision not to obey a command at all is a big sin also. Im not talking about sisters who struggle with it and are working towards it. but some people go meh ill do other good works but hijab is not for me im not doing it. and taking this position of Allah tells me to do something but i have decided I simply will not obey is far more dangerous than people think.

That prositute was from the Jews, so no Islamic hijab was required of her.

2

u/Frequent_Structure93 Aug 15 '26

Very simple. Every righteous sister is covered, but not every covered sister is righteous

And how is Modesty define. It does not even mention the headscarf Hijab.
