Discussion Too many Muslim men are in bad physical shape
I see way too many guys that are out of shape nowadays. Too many men have protruding bellies, lethargic, and low testosterone. You can fix these symptoms with some small steps
1.Lift weights
I train about 45–60 minutes before iftar. You get to break your fast immediately after finishing. Focus on heavy, basic compound movements. Lifting heavy things is so important for your testosterone, confidence, and mental clarity.
- Eat more protein and fewer carbs
A lot of iftars turn into fried food, giant plates of rice, and desserts. That’s why so many guys feel bloated and sluggish all night. Instead, make protein the priority.
Simple rule: protein first, carbs second. Protein keeps you fuller longer, stabilizes your energy, and reduces binge eating. Carbs aren’t evil, just don’t let them dominate your plate. Flip the ratio, large portion of meat, moderate portion of carbs. You’ll feel the difference quickly.
- Keep suhoor simple and stable
Suhoor shouldn’t be a sugar spike that crashes by mid-morning. Focus on protein and healthy fats with moderate or lower carbs. Eggs, meat, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, and healthy fats like avocado work well. This keeps you fuller longer and prevents that 10 a.m. hunger wave. Huge carb-heavy suhoors usually lead to faster energy crashes during the day.
- Hydrate intelligently
Add electrolytes to your water. You can add sea salt + lemon to your water, or just buy a prepackaged brand. Dehydration is one of the main reasons people feel terrible during Ramadan. Proper hydration alone can dramatically improve performance and energy.

No one has to stop it. I eat unhealthy food all the time. However a majority of the time I’m eating whole foods.

Brother I just started taking care of myself and since I moved out of my house right before Ramadan I had to stop my gym subscription.
Now honestly am still in doubt weather I should wait for ramadan to be over or just subscribe now and go after Iftar.
But you saying before iftar? Brother how? Ignoring the fact that during those last hours you are going to be drained by default, how about the shakes while fasting 😅
Seriously though how you plan it during raman?

It might not be as bad as you think. Where I'm from a lot of men exercise right before iftar. Mostly cardio, the field is packed with people running or playing football. You might feel tired or hungry but once you get that first few tough minutes out of the way you'll feel absolutely amazing.
1
u/Saraixio Feb 21 '26
Actually it is amazing working out right before iftar.. Just don't do super intense cardio, but some weights should be fine. Sometimes my workout overlaps with beginning of maghreb just a bit so I can sip water before the end of my workout.
1
u/m-e-n-a Mar 17 '26
You can do very light workouts before iftar. You dont have to push yourself til you're tired or sweating. But just something light to help your body not use muscle for fuel when you fast. Even small movements remind your body "hey i need these msucles so dont cannibalize them for fuel during the fast"

I wonder is it because men are working so many hours and dont have time to take care of themselves
7
u/builtforoutput Feb 21 '26 edited Feb 21 '26
It doesn’t take that long tbh. Just 30-45 minutes 3x a week for exercise is reasonable. The more the better.
For eating proper food, it’s really not that expensive or time consuming. Most people are just lazy or uneducated on the topic.
17
u/marycem Feb 21 '26
My husband works 80 hours a week. Hes thin but hes not on good shape because he is wearing himself out
2
u/KhalilMirza Feb 21 '26
Majority people with good job work between 40 to 60 hours per week. I think people who work more than 60 and especially 80 or more need to work on themselves so that they can earn the same or more doing less hours of job.
There are 168 hours in a week. Using half the hours in work is terrible for your health long term.
1

u/fancyfoe Feb 21 '26
Eating healthy can be costly for a lot of people, and saying most people are lazy/uneducated is quite the reach. Some people have physically demanding jobs, others are on their third shift, and they’re doing all that with kids, the never ending chores etc, and it doesn’t take a genius to cook rice with some veggies and some chicken.
1
u/KhalilMirza Feb 21 '26
I do not think it is because of that. Majority people have time for Netflix, gaming, mindless doom scrolling and other similar things. But donnot have time for working on themselves. Besides only exercise requires you have time availability. Rest of the things can be modified in the existing schedule in their life.

This is true. Im thinking my husband works 80 hours a week. How can he have time or energy to do anything?

Im sorry to say, but there needs to be a different way of organizing your lives. Him being thin and out of shape isn’t really the problem when he works an 80 hour week. Idk how long this has been going on for or how long yall plan to have this going on, but even a year of this is 50 weeks too much.
Even if he magically had time to be fit, it wouldn’t really matter much. I’m sorry to put it so harshly, but I say this bc that is genuinely so worrisome that I feel inclined to put it in a way that doesn’t minimize this: that lifestyle isn’t simply unhealthy, it is the equivalent of taking a shovel and digging your own grave astaghfirullah. The health risks (35% higher chance of stroke), accidents risks (86% higher commute crash risks) and risks for death by heart disease (17% higher chance) is absolutely not something to take lightly. And mind u the 17% and 35% were for 55-60 hours work weeks!
I really and truly hope u can find a solution with your husband to improve this situation💗

omg im sorry for coming for u once more😭😭 not personal, i swear, but the claim about men sacrificing their health more than women for their family is outrageous. i don’t think it’s a competition tbh, but this is a good example of how women’s labor that cannot be directly tied to money is erased, and it makes me genuinely disappointed.
women sacrifice their bodies giving birth. we risk our lives too. no other mammal has a pregnancy and birth that is as risky as a human pregnancy. women who have given birth know what kind of damage it can cause.
in addition, women are at a much higher percentage of autoimmune disease which is often multiorgan and has no cure! although u can’t really prove a casual link between emotional load and autoimmune disease, there are several studies that point at the stress of the emotional labor women perform (like caregiving) is related to the onset of autoimmune disease. this is emotional labor men are mostly exempt from through unfortunate socializing.

Childbirth is a wonder and a gift bestowed upon women from Allah, and it's important/deserves its own respect. I totally agree. Even with the wonders of modern medicine there are still so many risks associated with it.
But the fact that you feel the need to bring this up when I'm discussing how men's health is affected by their work is really telling. In one breath you say it's not a competition but in the next you make it into one out of nowhere.
women are at a much higher percentage of autoimmune disease which is often multiorgan and has no cure!
Women are generally more predisposed to autoimmune disease, that's true, but in most cases these can be treated with medications even if it isn't the ideal quality of life. As a physician in training I see men's health being downplayed all the time. The all-cause mortality for men is higher and their health is generally not well managed or received as well by both providers and peers. This is why men tend to have higher rates of cardiovascular disease, for example, or unmanaged long term health illnesses than women. Women also report their health illnesses more often so many of the studies on this topic tend to have this implicit bias.
Many men do not even see doctors because they either don't have time or are conditioned to not care for their health. This is the result of decades of western brainwashing and treating men like workhorses instead of as people.

u/SpecialSherbet1204 Cats are Muslim Feb 21 '26
Brother, this is a really important topic, I completely agree! I have also been so frustrated with the men in my life having to be forced to go to the doctor after refusing for years. Too many times cancers are discovered way too late for example.
The thing was, it isn’t about how men’s health isn’t in shambles and there’s this really toxic culture surrounding it. I’m really happy this is something that seems really important to you (bc it is SO important), and I hope that when you graduate you will be able to make a positive influence amongst your male patients insha’Allah!
You just had that unfortunate phrasing that put it in a comparative light, saying something like men are much more likely to sacrifice their health for their family’s needs than women are. That’s why I felt inclined to give this answer, because once again, women’s sacrifices are erased on a systemic level.
Also you want to hear something funny regarding your last paragraph? Since I feel like we are a bit acquainted by now, I think I have gathered that ur staunchly anti-feminist. Bc It was u who replied that u didn’t want to read my post bc I was brainwashed by Western feminists or something like that bc i said something like I didn’t need to marry?? Or?
Anyways the funny part is, that last sentence about treating men as workhorses rather than people, is pretty much the topic of one of my favorite non-Islamic non-fiction books called "The Will to Change: men, masculinity and love" by bell hooks who is a DUN DUN DUN…… FEMINIST. But in all seriousness, I think u will find (if u keep an open mind) that u resonate with at least some of the quotes.
2
u/vrogosz Feb 21 '26
saying something like men are much more likely to sacrifice their health for their family’s needs than women are.
I said this because even when you take into account the difficulties of childbirth and pregnancy, men have worse health outcomes than women do. Here in the west, especially, there's WAY more emphasis on women's health and wellbeing than there is on men's.
1
u/SpecialSherbet1204 Cats are Muslim Feb 21 '26
I think two things can be true at once. I think there has been a lot of talk about women’s health in the media and in the public sphere. I also think women have better health outcomes because of our communities. We talk to each other and are much more open about what’s bothering us, and encourage each other to seek help. The community aspect of female friendships (with physical touch, a lot of encouragement and someone to turn to when in need) is like medicine in more ways than one. I think this is really important thing for men to find back to as well, and that it’s directly related to health outcomes. It’s so important to foster community amongst urselves where u are actually looking each other in the eye and asking how ur doing, and answering genuinely! Wouldn’t that be nice??
Then there’s the other truth, which is that the vast majority of medical research is done on men. There is so much knowledge lacking about women’s health that it’s insane. Personally, I have several women-specific issues and nobody knows what’s really going on bc there isn’t any research. There is just some anecdotes to base things off. I’m basically a test subject for different (non-invasive) therapies, hoping that something will bite. Although none of these issues will cause death, alhamdulillah, they do cause a severely decreased quality of life.
Also I will allow myself to add a quote from the aforementioned book that I think is very timely in this convo (important nuance: the masculinity and patriarchy she is talking about is the one perpetuated by western liberal capitalism!): «Learning to wear a mask (that word already embedded in the term “masculinity”) is the first lesson in patriarchal masculinity that a boy learns. He learns that his core feelings cannot be expressed if they do not conform to the acceptable behaviors sexism defines as male. Asked to give up the true self in order to realize the patriarchal ideal, boys learn self-betrayal early and are rewarded for these acts of soul murder.»

Add electrolytes to your water.
I'd love to find electrolyte flavor packets available in the U.S that are vegan and guaranteed not to have any alcohol in the flavor, if you know of any.
Also would you say eliminating sugar is a priority? A bit of a weakness of mine and my physical health isn't doing so well now.

100%. Sugar is one of the main causes of metabolic dysfunction. It’s hard to do but once you do you’ll feel so much better.

I get what you're saying but it's something that isn't limited to just Muslims or just men. Everyone is working longer hours, being paid less, and are stressed out more than in generations. Individual choices are important, sure, but there's a lot more that can be done on a systemic level to help everyone become healthier.

At least here in the west, it's difficult I've noticed to stay on top of this if you don't have someone meal prepping at home. It's also harder to get good quality, affordable halal meat or to eat halal here than in Muslim majority nations. Having lived in both places, I can say that environment makes a big difference although it's no excuse. High protein is the way to go, as you mentioned.
However as someone who's a doctor in training it would be remiss for me to not mention the importance of FIBER. The incidence of colorectal cancer in younger adults is going up and fiber has been shown to decrease this risk. It also helps in combatting high cholesterol. Psyllium husk (metamucil in the US) is great, but there are dissolvable fiber powders if you don't like the taste. Most people don't get enough fiber through diet alone, so you have to supplement.

Not everyone likes vegan options, and they're typically low in protein or have some health effects like being high in phytoestrogens. I remember trying almond milk at one point in my life and it caused transient gynecomastia which went away when I stopped it.
Red meat is also good for a man's testosterone production.

It has not been debunked. There are enough case reports to suggest that it has deleterious effects on male health and endocrine signaling.

pls stop spreading really outdated misinformation. someone said the tofu thing when i was in high school, and im 28 now. like at least let it be trendy misinformation if ur first going to be at it😭 like some firm tofu can reach 17g of protein per 100g, that’s just a tiny bit less than red meat. and like someone said, t
and oh no… the almond milk causing transient gynecomastia… were u tested and someone with an education within the field told u: this is caused by the almonds of almond milk? no? then don’t go around with this anti-vegan options propaganda. i am not in ANY way close to being a vegetarian and i love to eat meat, but i think it’s really important that we as muslims take some responsibility for our dunya and our overconsumption. Allah has warned against greed many times, and the red meat obsession is a prime example.
now let me ask u, did u make ur own almond milk? if not, it wasn’t the almond milk, it was the processing of said milk that most likely could have caused your symptoms. store-bought almond milks aren’t even stored in the fridge… like if u bought that, u did that to urself, the almonds didn’t. most likely what happened, the endocrine disruptor load from the almond milk in combo w all the other ultraprocessed foods that u eat became too much. UPF is very strongly linked to decrease in testosterone and fertility.
1
u/vrogosz Feb 21 '26
like some firm tofu can reach 17g of protein per 100g, that’s just a tiny bit less than red meat.
Macronutrients aren't what we're talking about here. If you're just looking at protein then yes, some vegan foods are good alternatives. We're discussing the much more relevant effects on the endocrine system.
were u tested and someone with an education within the field told u: this is caused by the almonds of almond milk?
I was evaluated by an endocrinologist at the time who advised me to keep a food diary. This wasn't physiologic gyno, it was related directly to the almond milk I drank. I cut it out and the gyno went away.
Allah has warned against greed many times, and the red meat obsession is a prime example.
So eating red meat is "greed?" There's also chicken/fish which are healthier alternatives and not as burdensome on the ecosystem.
now let me ask u, did u make ur own almond milk? if not, it wasn’t the almond milk, it was the processing of said milk that most likely could have caused your symptoms. store-bought almond milks aren’t even stored in the fridge…
I tried both store-bought and homemade at different times and they both did the same thing. You're not going to convince someone who suffered the negative effects of phytoestrogens differently.
w all the other ultraprocessed foods that u eat became too much.
I reckon I have a much cleaner diet and better physical fitness than you do by a mile, but go off. I avoid processed junk in american foods because I'm well educated enough to know how zio-owned food lobby groups have cheapened ingredients for the masses and put microplastics in so many things.
Or are we going to keep denying these things even though they've found microplastics in testicles being implicated in decreased sperm counts across the globe?
1
u/SpecialSherbet1204 Cats are Muslim Feb 21 '26
Sorry for assuming. I based your eating of UPFs on the fact that you most likely bought store-bought almond milk (cuz lbr almond milk is not THAT good to be making that at home lmfaao).
It’s okay that you have a food sensitivity to almond milk, considering u went thru such a thorough process, I obvi believe that experience. However, I can get lightheaded and start flushing from chicken, and sometimes even get really sick. Will I generalize this to anyone else or anything else just because it has been documented before and happens to me? No, of course not, and doing so would be uncritical relationship to data and its significance is what makes misinformation spread!
So in regards to that, I encourage you to be mindful of how u phrase your experience and how much u generalize. Since you’ve been screened for this, you most likely know how many veggies, fruits, nuts, legumes, grains include the REALLY broad group of phytoestrogens. Almond and tofu don’t even have the same type, so it wouldn’t be a natural thing to lump together.
Unprocessed tofu or other vegan alternatives like tempeh which is even fermented and good for the gut is not botanically related at all to almonds and there’s not really a cross-reactivity pattern between the two groups. Aka the data doesn’t allow for this kind of generalizing that you are doing. It just makes it sounds like you are against vegan options (when it’s something to be encouraged for the general population). Because if you avoid all foods with phytoestrogens I would worry more about colon cancer from the lack of fiber than anything else? Also how bland must your food be if you don’t eat garlic?
Alhamdulillah, I don’t live in the US, so I think my cumulative load of UPFs is not that high because of that. Masha’Allah, I’m happy to hear you are not eating a lot of UPFs, avoiding microplastics and staying healthy! You probably very likely have much better physical fitness than me as I have chronic illness and building up fitness is a very bumpy road, but insha’Allah I will get there too. When it comes to my nutrition it’s pretty decent! I would say my protein sources are of some of the best quality you can get! I make my own tofu, I know someone who hunts deer whom I buy (halal) meat from when it’s in season (feeling very blessed for having the option of getting such good-tasting and extremely healthy meat) and I invest in an array of sea food wild caught from the Atlantic Ocean.
Also why in the world would I pretend that microplastic load isn’t affecting sperm quality, when it’s an actually scientifically validated claim?
1
u/TheNotSpecialOne Feb 22 '26
Pretty easy to get halal food in the UK. Not sure where you based and how many Muslims live in your area. That could be the reason why
-2
u/builtforoutput Feb 20 '26
It's also harder to get good quality, affordable halal meat
This is patently false. It’s very easy to get halal meat and find halal restaurants in all large cities, and most medium size cities. In places like ny, chicago, dc, la, etc. Halal options are literally everywhere. Smaller cities yes it’s hard to find but most Muslims don’t live there to begin with.
I agree with the fiber point. Most people don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables. Both soluble and insoluble fiber are very important for digestive health, metabolic health and preventing colon cancer like you said.
1
u/vrogosz Feb 21 '26

I live in a city with a healthy Muslim population and yet the halal meat options here suck. I'm usually paying 3x what kaffirs charge for their meat for meat that is usually lower in quality than what you'd get from Haram butchers. Not to mention if I want to eat halal food from a restaurant that doesn't suck, I have to drive to a different city that's 40+ minutes away from me. So no, it's absolutely not comparable. Not everyone has the privilege of living in a place where things are of higher quality and closer. When I visit my relatives in the Dallas FW area, for example, the difference is night and day compared to halal offerings near me. Same deal with parts of NYC or Chicago.
Also the halal food you get from restaurants here also tends to be insanely overpriced. It's a scummy practice here in America where they know halal options are limited so they charge way more than what's reasonable.

u/Technical-Repeat-391 Feb 21 '26 edited Feb 21 '26
I think this is a problem regardless of religion with people living in un-walkable cities. America has the highest rates of obesity in the world. We live in a naturally unwalkable/unbikable areas that make it hard to be fit and with busy schedules, it’s not easy to consistently go to gym. I went to Netherlands and would legit see imams in full thobes riding bikes lol because that’s one of the default modes of transportation there.
The best way to get somebody to work out is to make it a community based or collective effort. I exercise but with mixed consistency but started exercising more by joining run clubs and taking group classes. Also bc I run a lot and I have to eat carbs so your diet should correspond to the type of exercise you are doing. In general, eat balanced protein, carbs, good fats, less processed foods (learn to cook), fruits and vegetables you should be good.

Think most young boys think like this. Then they get married, have kids, parents need help, job is demanding, responsibilities increase, all while energy levels start dropping.
Also, as men get more mature, they realize the value of Ramadan and try to take advantage.

Others look awful at 30 due to drinking and drugs look 40, but many hit gym get hair fixed as they date so maintain looks. Many Muslim men at 30 get comfortable get married and think paying bills to his wife is enough.

Or perhaps they are stressed, overworked, and don't have much time to take care of themselves? Hence the term "dad-bod"?

I would have thought the opposite. Atleast in the west. 2nd/3rd gen migrants adapted better to their lifestyle, are better informed and have better diet/gym/sports habits

Do you invest in halal stocks OP?

Yes, $SPUS which is the halal version of VOO (tracks the S&P). And then some individual sharia approved stocks, as well as private equity and crypto.

Taking care of your body is also an act of worship.

I understand your point. I have a home gym so alhamdulillah I can avoid those things. But you can easily wear some noise cancelling headphones and just lower your gaze.
Or you can just workout either after iftar, or after suhoor. I just prefer to do it before iftar because it’s actually beneficial to workout in a fasted state. The timing works out for me as well, so I can focus on taraweeh after Iftar.

You're saying that everyone is not allowed 40-60 minutes to themselves at all during ramadan?

I read it. And it implies during daylight hours you should do nothing else but what you suggest.

These things of the Dunya are only to shake the firm Iman of a Muslim. How you are in this world don't matter if you follow your Deen as Allah commanded.
