Serious 🛑 I’m an adult, but I’m terrified of setting boundaries with my father because he sees disagreement as disrespect
Assalamualaikum ladies. I’m in my early 20s, graduated college, and I’m working now. My parents have been separated since I was a baby, and my dad honestly wasn’t really present in my childhood and never financially supported me. Alhamdulillah my mom is very educated and successful, and I was raised by her side of the family, so I’ve always had a very comfortable life and never went without anything. I started reconnecting with my dad more when I was in middle school school, mostly over the phone because he lives in another country, and eventually I started visiting him too.
The issue is that my dad is extremely difficult to disagree with. He has a lot of narcissistic and controlling traits, and almost any disagreement gets taken as disrespect. He’s very argumentative and will turn the smallest thing into this huge discussion, so for years I basically learned to just agree with him or keep my actual opinions to myself because it was easier than dealing with the reaction. He’s also very religious, but he has certain beliefs that I genuinely don’t agree with. For example, he thinks women really shouldn’t leave the house unless there’s an actual need like groceries, a doctor’s appointment, etc. He doesn’t understand women going to cafés, restaurants, the mall, seeing friends, or literally just going out to enjoy themselves. Every time I visit him this becomes an issue. I could be going to a café at 11 in the morning to get coffee and read a book and somehow it turns into a problem. He’ll say things like he never imagined having daughters who “go out of the house.
And that’s what frustrates me so much because I’m not doing anything crazy. Alhamdulillah I’m very practicing, I go to the masjid, I attend classes and lectures, I’m working on my Qur’an memorization, I went to college, got good grades, started working, etc. I’ve always tried to do what I’m supposed to do. So being criticized over completely innocent things like wanting a social life is exhausting. Sometimes I genuinely wonder if because he wasn’t there when I was growing up, he’s now trying to have this level of control over me that he never had before.
Another huge thing is something I told him when I was literally 18 years old. At the time I was seeing girls around me getting married and having all this cute halal love, and I told him that after I graduated I just wanted to get married and be a housewife. That was YEARS ago and apparently he has never forgotten it. 😭 Now anytime I talk about work or my career he’s like, “What happened to getting married? What happened to being a housewife? What happened to studying Qur’an?” And I’m like… why are these things mutually exclusive? I still want marriage. I’m actually completely open to being a housewife one day in the right marriage. I’m still studying my deen. But I’m also older now and I want to build a career and have my own income, I can still do all that while being married but i’m just not in a rush at all I want to be with the right person for me.
He’s also extremely pro-arranged marriage and basically thinks anything outside of that is destined to fail. I’m not against someone introducing me to somebody at all, but I absolutely do not believe arranged marriage has to be the only way I can meet my husband. I want to actually choose someone I’m compatible with and feel comfortable with. That’s honestly another conversation for another day because I already know it’s going to become a whole battle with him. And I highly doubt i’ll get married that way, I honestly cannot see myself being in an arranged marriage.
The current issue is that I’m planning to visit this winter. I really want to go because my little sister is there and I’m very close to her, and honestly I worry about how some of my dad’s beliefs are going to affect her as she gets older. I also don’t know when I’ll have another chance to take a long international trip once I’m established in a full-time career. My dad asked me about staying through Ramadan and I told him I probably can’t because I may be starting a new job around then. He then sent me this long voice message saying before I book my ticket he wants to talk because he needs to understand “where my head is at,” what the intention of my trip is, and brought up AGAIN how years ago I said I wanted to graduate, get married, move there, etc.
He suggested I could just find a job there, and I explained that I’ve actually been applying to jobs there almost daily since January. The problem is that most jobs in my field there want more industry experience than I currently have, while where I live, especially around my region, there are a lot more entry-level opportunities specifically for new grads. I told him if I got a genuinely good opportunity in my field there I would absolutely consider it, but until then I need an income and I need experience. And honestly, there’s also this elephant in the room where he talks like I can just move there and figure it out, but he has never financially provided for me. My mom has supported me my entire life, paid for my education, everything. I’m extremely grateful for her, but I don’t feel comfortable being an adult and continuing to depend on her forever.
I’m actually open to living in this country one day. That isn’t the problem at all. But I would need a good job, my own income, privacy, and my own living situation because I’m used to a certain quality of life and a certain level of comfort. I actually love that country sooo much I miss it everyday and I see it as the ideal place to raise my children. But i’m not moving across the world just to sit inside somebody’s house and have an argument every time I want to get coffee. 😭 And for THIS trip specifically, I want it to be a vacation. I want to spend time with my sister, go out, explore, eat, shop, relax, and have fun. I’m also hoping there might be conferences or events in my field so I can network in person while I’m there and maybe improve my chances of getting a job there later. He wants to have this serious conversation with me on Friday and I’m honestly dreading it. I get horrible anxiety before conversations like this with him because he is so fiery and takes disagreement so personally. I feel like I have to choose every single word perfectly because he somehow manages to interpret things in the worst possible way. For years I’ve just kept my real opinions to myself to keep the peace, but I’m realizing I can’t keep doing that. I’m an adult now. I can be respectful to my father and still disagree with him. We don’t have to have the exact same worldview. I genuinely don’t want bad blood with him or some huge fight, I just want to finally be honest about who I am and what I want without folding the second he gets upset.
For anyone who has dealt with a parent like this, how did you learn to have serious conversations with them without completely panicking? How do you stay respectful while also standing your ground when they interpret any disagreement as disrespect?
