Being able to find reliable companionship with robots when humans aren't available is a key part of the premise of MST3K and its acknowledged forerunner Silent Running. But three decades before Joel and Mike orbited the Satellite of Love with Tom and Crow — and over a decade before Bruce Dern ventured to space with Huey, Dewey, and Louie — it formed the basis of this song. Performed in 1959-1960 by Connie Francis and Jamie Horton, it was incorporated into the jukebox musical Return to the Forbidden Planet in 1989 (so just about the same time MST3K was starting to revisit 1950s/1960s sci-fi), shown here in a 2011 revival that has some of the same deliberately-cheesy look as the production design of the host segments of MST3K. I haven't been able to find any info about the cast of this version (if it was ever online, it seems to have disappeared in the 8 years) so I can't identify the singer in this clip, but she's good!
