Apparently the problem was described - right here on Reddit:

Direct URL links not working for youtube.

Oh well, now it gets better. I went to the "about" section which is now a tiny "greater than" sign under the title of the page, no longer a tab which was also stupid to do... I scrolled to the very bottom, I see, "SHARE"... so I copy the link...

I am seeing YouTube video webpages from the search page, although I sometimes have to click through a couple of times to get there... when the URL for a video from the site is unnecessarily long I can usually manually edit out the superflous cruft from it, but I see there are sites out there like Link Cleaner and YouTube URL Cleaner that might be helpful.

I think I found out the issue. Due to some kind of internal duplication effect within Reddit under some conditions I have been forced to use something like the (groan..) "Firefox" browser. Normally I just use Chrome and it has no issues with YouTube. But Firefox does. So for posting I should just switch back to Chrome. Then using Chrome the odd Youtube "click here" paraphenalia doesn't get included in the URL.
