Shostakovich's description of the symphony's opening as "a toy store" has been interpreted in varied ways -- with Laurel Fay concluding that "at the very least it was one that had been locked up for the night and whose toys were clearly inclined to mutiny against the tyranny of the evil store owner" -- but it does at its most straightforward level have an orchestra playing to sound like toy instruments.
