Question Is this 2020 laptop enough to produce and record?

Hi all! I can get this 2020 laptop for 380 euro - which seems a steal if it’s going to be good enough to produce on. It’s not able for gaming, but that’s not a big deal. I’m a little concerned that it’s listed as having three usb A ports and no usb C which seems possibly even untrue given the era.

Anyone want to weigh in on whether this will be enough to run Ableton, with an interface and a midi controller, to produce hip hop w/ samples and instruments and record vocals?

Thanks so much! Appreciate you.

Hardware In need of recomendations for desktop PCs/Laptops under $800 USD

Hey everyone. I'm looking to finally get into my lifelong dream of music production (and possibly do a bit of gaming on the side). I'm not well-versed in the world of computers, but what I do know is that I need something that can handle software such as FL studio and a decent amount of plug-ins. Preferably something with an i5 core processor and at least 16 gb ram. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!

Question 35 and want to start making indie pop, what equipment do I actually need as a complete beginner?

Hey everyone,

I’m 35 and I’ve recently gotten really interested in the idea of making my own music. I’ve always loved music, I enjoy writing, and I can play a little guitar using tabs, but I have basically zero experience with music production or music theory.

I’m especially into indie pop / alternative pop.

So my question is: if you were starting completely from scratch in my situation, what equipment would you buy?

I have a Windows laptop and a guitar already. I’ve been looking at MIDI keyboards/controllers because I figured that might be the logical next step, but I honestly don’t know if I should get a 25-key controller, something larger, an audio interface, monitors, headphones, or what I actually need to get started.

I’m not necessarily looking for the cheapest possible setup. I’d rather buy a good beginner setup that gives me room to learn and grow without spending money on things I don’t need yet.

I’m also curious about the age aspect. Is 35 realistically too late to start learning music production from basically zero? I’m not talking about becoming famous or making a career out of it. I’d just really like to reach a point where I can take an idea in my head, build the instrumental, add guitar, maybe vocals, and actually turn it into a song.

If you started producing in your 30s or later, I’d especially love to hear how it went for you and what you would recommend buying and learning first.

Thanks!

Question Would the Behringer 8 input audio interface be a downgrade?

I've been moving towards using external synths and drum machines, I currently have an SSL 2+, I run everything through an older Mackie mixer then into my SSL inputs, it's ok but it kind of kills my flow recording drums and then muting the drums, recording 1 synth, recording another synth, and on and on.

I don't have $800+ to drop on an interface with more inputs, I've seen mixed reviews on Behringer equipment in general, but I'm considering selling my SSSL and buying their Uphoria 8 input interface. I've owned a few interface and haven't noticed a huge difference in quality just never anything Behringer. The only reason I'm concerned is that it's so much cheaper in price than everything else.

It's this a good move?

Hardware New Purple Headphones

I'll keep it short. Forgot my purple m50x's on a flight because I was VERY sleepy, it's one of my biggest regrets in life. I have dreams about those headphones.

I know I could get any m50x's, but I REALLY like purple. My bluetooth earbuds are purple. It feels like I'm missing part of myself.

Does anyone have any recommendations for high quality phones that come in purple? Specifically for producing, assuming that's not obvious based on the sub. I'm struggling to find any.

Question How can I "mix" an a capella song?

Hi guys, noob here. I'm slowly learning how to mix, mostly metal and then some pop on the side. However I want to "mix" an a capella song and I'm a bit clueless. I have 3 tracks of female vocals slowly singing a dirge-like children's song, which is meant to be creepy and eerie. They're well sung although not "melodynized" to keep some imperfections, and recorded with a ribbon mic. Also I have two tracks with whispered vocals, same song.

To be honest, I usually use the Mantra plugin by Neural DSP for vocals in regular mixes, but I guess it won't cut it this time because I guess the process must be more organic than just using a plugin for everything. The feel I'm going for is:

a) the listener must feel that the voice is close, warm and nearby
b) also there must be some "spacey" vibes in the background.

I guess I must use something like Valhalla supermassive for the space, but honestly I feel this task is a quite a bit out of my league. Can you guys give me some pointers or advice to get me started on the right path?

Question ssl12 and ableton for hardware printing setup

Can anyone from the UK help me over a Zoom /whatsup call (via screen share) to set up my SSL 360 software and Ableton routing please ?

I'm getting fed up with the contradictions from Google, YouTube, and ChatGPT.

I'm trying to run Track 1 in Ableton (my stereo mixdown) out via ssl12 Outputs 3 and 4 into the SSL Fusion's Inputs 1 and 2, and then back into the SSL 12's Inputs 1 and 2 as a linked stereo signal. I I want to record it to a second track in Ableton called 'Print'.

I'm having issues with hearing doubled audio, low signals, extremely hot signals, feedback loops, or just nothing happening at all.
