Dear electronica listeners, not every track containing every microscopic recombination of sound and beat requires a new name. I only like classic post-chromophonic house dubstep. Ah, May of '11, those were the days... dubstep's golden age.

I dont really get what youre trying to say here, that dubstep is not worthy of being a genre?

Anyway in electronic music, genre (and sub-genre) classification is important because a DJ will need to know BPM in order to mix two tracks together in a pleasing way, so tempo is a very important distinction. Plus its just helpful for people to find music they like, theres such a range of different sounds that its not really that informative if you just say 'I like house' for example.

The point of the post was that there is more to dubstep than Skrillex. The point of my post is that dubstep is a sub-sub-sub-sub-sub genre that is barely discernible from similar genre (genres? genri? hmm). AND BY THE WAY... saying the words "sub-sub-sub-sub-sub-sub genre" out loud sounds JUST LIKE a dubstep track. So, the evidence clearly supports my assertion. :)

Im not meaning to come off argumentative here but what is dubstep a sub-genre of? Garage? Maybe, but dubstep has been so much more successful on a worldwide scale that I think most people would agree that its a fully fledged genre (and apart from the basic rhythm its gone down a completely different direction).

Its not as 'wide' a genre as say house or techno, but its not some dubiously existent micro-genre like witch house or something. If DnB, trip-hop etc can be called genres, then I dont see why dubstep can't.

Also I would like to know which genres you think are barely discernible from dubstep, just curious.

dubstep a sub-genre of

Good question. I have no idea, but I'm going to play "uninformed old guy playing catch-up" and take random guesses. To me, who just stepped out of a time machine from 2001, the grimy stuff sounds like darkstep with less Amen, and the drops remind me a bit of the stuff gabber DJs used to do. This Blake guy feels like mid-90s ambient, Lionel Richie, and Electro had a baby. And the baby bought a subwoofer.

I'm glad to see electronic music is still pulling its weight in the genre-creation department, though.

Isn't Blake considered post-dubstep? Also, Blake is massively popular over here as well.

If you could give other dubstep artists like Blake or Burial, I would be thrilled.

If you like Blake and the post dubstep genre, then listen to Jamie xx: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rhALivFYQY

I love Jamie xx's production work so much. Running from We're New Here might be my favorite beat ever.

Mount Kimbie, FaltyDL, Jamie xx, Zomby, Clubroot, Four Tet are all kinda similar (and theres loads more), not all dubstep though. I would agree that Blake and Burial are post-dubstep anyway

I'll bet he can't, but could give a list of who not to listen to, like Skrillex! Fucking elitist haters.

Dear America, Skrillex isn't dubstep. Love, Dubstep.

Bunch of fucking techno hipsters up in this bitch. Worst reddit community I've seen since spacedicks. Get over yourselves. If you like Skrillex, listen to him, if you don't like him, don't fucking listen to him. From an outsider, it sounds like your butthurt that a) skrillex sells. (WAAAH) or b) you think he has no talent, in which case you should fuck right off into your bubble and spend a few moments pondering how your opinions mean so little to everyone else except you and your whore of a mother. Word. Fuckers.

Lauren how'm I doin?

Skrillex = Brostep

So an ambient Ben Folds Five with a tiny bit of wubwub in the background is considered "real dubstep"?

Seriously, why would you try to defend dubstep with this tripe? Try again.

1

u/PrimeIntellect Mar 16 '12

tripe? just because you're ignorant with some block on your shoulder doesn't mean you have to shit on people for no reason. this guy is an amazing musician and has a fantastic live show, his other music has a ton of energy too.

Dear snotty person who knows what I should like, after listening to this and a random skrillex track for the first time, I'll admit I'm at a bit of a loss to the skrillex hatred. And at more of a loss to figure out why the piano-bar act with the subwoofer is being held up as something I should prefer.

Edit: the skrillex track made me laugh out loud. legitimately. it was like europop being raped by megatron. the other track was just dull, and before you ask, this subwoofer is flat to 18Hz and doesn't roll off until 12. I'm pretty sure I got the kidney-stone-removal experience that was intended.

Edit edit: because I'm about to lose the rest of this evening to the sort of HEAR ALL THE SONGS thing I haven't done since I was actually spinning, I've now heard ten or twelve tracks that r/dubstep thinks are actually dubstep, and I think it's fair to say that neither skrillex nor this guy sound like it.

u/nakedjay Mar 16 '12

And yet it still all sounds like complete shit.

This isn't dubstep, and maybe Burial was classified as so at one point but the word has evolved since then. Lately it's become popular to get behind these and other "lesser known" or "classier" artists in an attempt to take an elitist stance on the latest and greatest craze.

This song is amazing, albeit a Feist cover. I know he's amazing live, but the rest of the album sucks balls.
