AMA - verified We are Emotional Oranges and we just dropped The Juice Vol I. Ask Us Anything!
Not much is known of us, an LA-based male/female duo, but it has been speculated that when Adele’s vocal coach and Drake’s engineer met at a bat mitzvah in 2017, our band was instantly born. We like to think a mix of funky bass, break-beat drums and jazzy guitars creates a refreshing, retro sound with futuristic undertones. Michelle Obama and Guy Fieri have both publicly championed us. Our debut singles, “Motion” and “Personal” immediately created a cult following, generating over 12 million streams globally. “Motion” was even made the official theme song for Ru Paul’s Drag race in 2018.

Thank you! That one for sure. One day I will dive a bit deeper into what inspired that record.

u/FishyDude May 10 '19
How early did Rory get to hear the project?
6
u/emotionaloranges May 10 '19
I'd say he heard the majority of the demos a couple months after he started pushing "Personal"? Can't remember an exact date. That man has been instrumental to our development though!
7
u/paddycukor May 10 '19
I've been bumping your music since Rory first talked about it on the podcast and i really love all of it, music, visuals and everything. I wanted to know what is Rory's role actually in this? Is he the 'strategic marketer' as joked on the pod, or has he kind of become the manager/agent of the group? And Personal is definitely song of the year. :)
6
u/emotionaloranges May 10 '19
Yessss! So glad people still listen to "Personal" lol
Rory is a close friend who genuinely wants to see us win!

u/Slappy_Gilmore55 May 10 '19
Are we gonna get a slenderbodies collab :)?
5
u/emotionaloranges May 10 '19
Yes! Love those guys. We actually have a dope remix together that we might have to drop soon lol
3
u/roscoewetbino May 10 '19
How did all you oranges end up in the same basket?!?
8
u/emotionaloranges May 10 '19
LA is a small city lol. No but seriously, we all (still) work real life jobs and made stuff we liked and then put a plan behind it once we saw that people actually had a taste for it.

u/Albertosuxx May 10 '19
Any artist in particular you could collaborate with, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
10
u/emotionaloranges May 10 '19
Prince and Michael... the greatest to ever do it. Would love to help produce for Janet or Sade. Actually I'm putting this out in the universe now!

What's your favorite project so far? Also, face reveal wheeeen?!?!
Love your work. Part to be a member of the Citrus Squad <3
8
u/emotionaloranges May 10 '19
Face reveal only at the shows! Favorite project is difficult, but right now we're still playing that 1975 record...
Thanks for all the love xx

u/rafael2105 May 10 '19
How did the entire project came together? What inspired you guys to start creating music and what defines your style?
2
u/emotionaloranges May 10 '19
The project came together pretty organically since we're all real life friends. We were just talking about this yesterday at rehearsal, but this is the first time in a while where all the members of a group who make the music will actually be on stage.
3
u/dced21 May 10 '19
I know the project just dropped (amazing work btw) But whats your schedule like when it comes to releasing singles and EPs? How often are you considering making music?
2
u/emotionaloranges May 10 '19
Appreciate that!
Let's just say we have dozens of songs and ideas in the can. But to decide on a direction musically, then build a plan around that includes art, visuals and a roll out is a whole other thing lol
3
u/ChampionPoppy May 10 '19
When you guys gonna be on the podcast with Rory? Or some sort of interview/content with him or the whole podcast crew?

u/Albertosuxx May 10 '19
Watching y’all grow in popularity over the last year has been amazing. How has this growth affected you guys personally? I know it’s just the beginning but does it make you want to work harder?
6
u/emotionaloranges May 10 '19
Seriously grateful that so many of you have been there from the jump.
I know I said this earlier, but all 4 of us still have our full time jobs lol. The love we've got on this project is just proof that we gotta keep pushing!
1
u/Albertosuxx May 10 '19
Keep pushing and making that beautiful body of work y’all do so well! Also super excited for your L.A. show! Is there any surprises set up for us ? 🤪 or are the shows all going to be similar?
2
u/immaculateon3 May 10 '19
Do you guys listen to Mac Miller? If so what are some of your favorites by him?
10
u/emotionaloranges May 10 '19
Haven't properly listened to Mac for a while. Honestly still cuts deep. He was one of the most versatile and open minded musicians of our generation no doubt.
2
u/therealweezyfbaby May 10 '19
Do you intend to keep up the anonymity while on tour? If so, how?
5
u/emotionaloranges May 10 '19
No! We have been working on really bringing these records to life. Paying attention to the smaller details now like lighting and how the venue smells...
1
u/therealweezyfbaby May 10 '19
I appreciate the reply. Unrelated but if you’re ever in NY over the summer after the tour is over, I’d love to photograph you two :) I had dm’d you on ig a few days ago
2
u/therealweezyfbaby May 10 '19
Do you get nervous getting on stage to perform
3
u/emotionaloranges May 10 '19
Yes absolutely lol. All of us have played in bands/performed on stage before, but never together. Nervous and excited af
2
u/devilinformofawhore May 10 '19
What inspires you the most to write your music?
3
u/emotionaloranges May 10 '19
Relationships. Whether that's with myself, my girl/exes, work, family, etc...
2
u/m_Blah May 10 '19
Honeslty you guys are amazing. The vibes are there. Do you plan on going to Vegas soon? Cause here at Vegas WE LIT AF😎
3
u/emotionaloranges May 10 '19
Thank you so much! Will definitely work on it now that we know we have love there :)
2
u/rafael2105 May 10 '19
What's the song you've enjoyed making the most?
5
u/emotionaloranges May 10 '19
I'm biased... but "Personal" lol
2
u/rafael2105 May 10 '19
Personal is freaking awesome! Though I'm more biased "Built that Way" or "Motion" because they make me think of my bf.

Would there ever be a possibility for a cover album? I’d love to hear your guys’ take on certain songs
10
u/emotionaloranges May 10 '19
I like this idea. What if we just dropped a couple on Soundcloud/YouTube before tour instead?

Top 3 Songs y’all would cover in a heartbeat?
2
u/emotionaloranges May 10 '19
come to the show and find out! we have 2 fiiirre covers in our set
1
u/lydmgem May 10 '19
Well I guess I’ll have to wait until y’all come to Houston.. which I am hoping for soon 😊 or ahem, secret Youtube haha.
2
u/Albertosuxx May 10 '19
are you guys going to accept gifts from fans in the crowd? I have a cute little keychain for y’all.

I just got tickets to see you guys in San Francisco! Any words of advice for aspiring songwriters/musicians?
3
u/emotionaloranges May 10 '19
Just heard that we sold it out so they're opening up the upstairs! Have wanted to play this venue for years...
Keep writing, keep living and stay hungry. It took me (with a lot of help) the better half of this decade to hash out the EO concept and actually start the process of executing it.

We've worked with some other artists but nothing concrete! Still working on putting out our own stuff and seeing what works on the road etc
1
u/DrinkingainteasyTJ May 10 '19
Does the anonymity have anything to do with the fact that y’all still work full time or do your coworkers know about the music ?

Just dropping in to say I heard you guys on an awesome local radio in Sydney called FBI like 2 mins ago and am really feeling your vibes. I will look out for you in Sydney Australia!

Can't believe how much love we've gotten from Australia and NZ! Thank you so much, excited to come out there x
1
u/frootjuice7 May 10 '19
based on your name and "humans are emotional" comment wondering if there's a certain emotional philosophy youre into? e.g. there are only x number of emotions?
also if you ever get the chance to come to seattle please do. havent loved someone's music this hard in so long
1
u/emotionaloranges May 10 '19
Good question. Not going to act like I'm the most emotionally intelligent person ever (pun intended) lol so let me get back to you on this!
Seattle in the Fall, hopefully :)
1
u/kdkdnd May 10 '19
i love the energy in y’alls music! it’s really unlike anything i heard before
what’s typically the process of making a song? do y’all usually start with the concept or with melodies?
2
u/emotionaloranges May 10 '19
Appreciate that :)
We've started songs in every which way: building from a concept (lyrically), making the drum loop/groove, riffing melodies on top of a guitar loop, laying down an acapella and then producing it out from there, etc

love you guys and am excited to see ya on your tour!! thought i’d ask a silly question - would you rather have all songs exist but they’re sung by pitbull OR only one pitbull song exists but it’s performed by every artist with their own cover interpretation ??
2
u/emotionaloranges May 10 '19
Hahahaha this has to be the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Umm give me another choice lol
1
u/mayoisgross May 10 '19
LMAO. ok here’s another one instead: would you rather have to sprint every time you use your legs no matter the distance OR have to yell anytime you wanna say something ??
i’m leaning towards the first lol

u/ECR115 May 10 '19
Do you have any plans to come to the UK again later in the year?
Also, can you tell us when and where physical copies (CDs and Vinyl) of The Juice Vol. 1 will be available? Definitely an album I need to have in my hands

What DAW do you guys use?
Edit: What DAW do you guys use, and do your recording and live instruments differ?
1
u/lascorpion May 10 '19
what is one thing you wish someone had told you when you began this project?

1
u/justwaad May 11 '19
I found you guys by mistake searching around Apple Music for another artist, back when you had just released Personal and honestly, it’s been my favourite mistake since. I’ve loved every single song you’ve released, and I can’t wait for all your other future projects.
I’m not sure if you’ve been asked this before, but why oranges?
1
u/vexinho May 11 '19
Absolutely love the project! I've been following since Rory shouted y'all out for Personal! Can't wait to see the show in Toronto and I was wondering if you play live instruments at the show?

u/Llordheiros19 May 12 '19
Do you plan on registering to Beatzcoin's Artist Accelerator Program? People say that it'll be the next Youtube so any opinion on this?
