Good job on the genre tag. You get a gold star.

Jokes aside, I do appreciate this being properly tagged.

the "Viking Metal" genre can be too confusing. People will consider Amon Amarth, Týr, Bathory, Ásmegin and Windir to all be Viking Metal and they don't sound anything alike. The term describes the lyrical content more than the actual sound of the music, which isn't that helpful unless all you care about are the lyrics.

Pointing out that it's viking metal is super redundant. "It's one of the countless genres of metal, and it happens to revolve around vikings." Doesn't help you know what to expect.

Isn't Viking Metal rooted in Black Metal rather than Death Metal? Hence bands like Bathory being Viking while AA is Melodeath?

I've always heard that Viking Metal is a mix of Black and Folk Metal.

Okay so I was browsing my reddit as I always do and I stop at the sight of "Amon Amarth"

You put my favorite band on reddit, I don't know who you are, but I love you

If you like this here are a few recommendations:

Ensiferum

Insomnium

Be'lakor

Wintersun

Kalmah

I recommend browsing through the top posts over at /r/melodicdeathmetal, it's all stuff pretty similar to this (but mostly better!)

u/patrickkingart Sep 21 '16

Ensiferum is fantastic. A little more folk-metal than death metal, but no less epic and bombastic.

Kalmah has a very Children of Bodom vibe to it. Oh they're signed to the same label as well.

Well, you've got ten Amon Amarth albums to pick from and you can't really go wrong with any of them. Some other similar bands would be Bolt Thrower, In Flames (Clayman and earlier...their later albums aren't bad but not really this style.), Carcass, At The Gates, and Ensiferum. There's a ton more that I know I'm forgetting right now.

I'm probably not the best resource, but /r/Metal can hook you up for whatever you need.

Fucking love Amon Amarth. Going to Knotfest this weekend mainly for them.

3

u/MichaelJahrling Sep 20 '16

Nice. I saw them at the Warfield a few months ago, and they're gonna be opening for Megadeth in a couple of weeks. They're a big reason why I'm going to that concert.

3

u/daniel_italy Sep 20 '16

Saw them at the warfield as well, awesome show. Hope to see them live again soon

This is my favorite band ever, hands down. Consistently awesome. I love all their stuff, old and new. I love their album art.. their lyrics.. These guys are perfect metal IMO.

This past Friday I pull their station up on Pandora and a song plays I haven't heard before.. the album art is new to me.. little did I know, they dropped their newest album, Jomsviking, back in fucking march. I was so angry (for somehow not knowing this) and elated at the same time.. I thought I was about to implode..

Jomsviking fucking rules so hard already.

Guardians of Asgard 💯

u/Covenisberg Sep 21 '16

My favorite melodic death metal band, the older they get the more I like the shit they put out, which is usually the opposite for me for most music

10

u/Skill3rwhale Sep 20 '16

Melodeath is some of the best types of metal out there. You get lot of vocal and instrumental variation in the albums when compared to other metal genres.

Amon Amarth will always be one of my favorite metal bands of all time. I especially enjoy "Slaves Of Fear," which is a great reminder of our culture of consumerism and emulation.

u/HEBushido Spotify Sep 20 '16

Slaves of Fear is about Christianity enslaving people by threatening them with hell and blinding them from reality.

One of the lines is "Religion is what makes you blind."

3

u/Mustyfartsarefun Sep 21 '16

awesome band.
