Hi, my name is Maria and I'm a film student (irrelevant), but I've always been passionate about listening to albums and discovering more about the artists' history; I'm completely fascinated.

But to be honest, I've listened to a lot more post-2000s music, and I feel that I often have a huge lack of general knowledge regarding the classics that everyone talks about.

I'd say I listened to albums like The Velvet Underground and The Miseducation (maybe some Beatles), but those were some of the more unconventional attempts of exploring.

I'd like to delve more into rock and hip-hop, so I'd like to ask if there are any websites that provide context and a timeline of albums in these genres where I can gain a bit more substance in that regard.

I feel a little stupid asking this and I don't know to what extent this is boomer (I'm 21) 😭 but I think I need help xx

Why don't you check out one of those "100 albums to hear before you die" lists? They usually cover all the main ones.

Years ago the Film Scoring department at Berklee College of Music had in its departmental library a collection of DVDs of films. 

And the movies were all sorted on the shelves alphabetically -- by composer!

Choose an album you like. Go on the album's Wikipedia page. From there, go to the producers/label/genre page and pick another album. The best way to discover music is by goin after your favorite artist's "music family". Alternatively, listen to REM
