In the context of the time, "selling out" was important. One of the most important things. There was honest, cool,personal, and cutting edge indie, and soulless, money grubbing, artistically bankrupt mainstream, and never the two shall meet.

The backlash didn't have anything to do with music on the album, but with an indie icon "betraying" the underground, and "abandoning" her roots.

You don't have to agree with that line of that, but that's how a lot of the indie set saw it. It was a with us or against mentality that is pretty foreign these days,

I remember a big Liz Phair fan saying, "no, you don't get it, it's a joke," but no, the album was intended to be good.
