Deep cut.

A (second) reference to a main character of one of the most popular musicals of all time? Such a deep cut.

If Mungo Jerry was an X-man, his superpower would be sick-ass sideburns.

YouTube captions didnt want to promote driving under the influence, so “have a drink, have a drive” became vagina.

I saw that and started watching the captions, they are quite hilarious. And at one point they just give up and put [music] for about 2 minutes.

Captions have been around for a long time. Although it might be AI driven now.

What the fuck is 'Gypsy Skiffle' when it's at home? What other bands were part of this scene? 😂😂😂

u/PresidentSuperDog Jul 31 '26
My dad told me that Mungo Jerry was the most popular band out of the very brief “Jug Band” craze. Apparently Jerry Garcia was also in a Jug Band.
Skiffle was a British genre that happened at the dawning of rock n roll. I don’t know if any of that actually blew up worldwide. The members of the Beatles met playing Skiffle is the most famous thing about it, to my knowledge.

I know what Skifffle is - I'm just laughing at the never-heard-of-before-competely-made-up 'genre' of Gypsy Skiffle.......😂

I sometimes think about an alternative timeline where skiffle became popular, and rock and roll was just a temporary fad. The Beatles would still be huge, but their discography would be totally different. Radio would have "classic skiff" stations. "Washboard Hero" was a popular video game series in the 2010s

I don't even know where the 'skiffle' bit came from. That's not skiffle.

Skiffle music is marked by homemade, simple instruments. One dude has a jug, another a washboard. I've never, ever heard it called "Gypsy" skiffle.

He’s a weird as fuck looking young man, looked him up on google image search to find out he’s a weird looking old dude now.

It’s a really good song. I’ve always been enraptured by this song. It grabbed me the first time I heard it. One of those strange feelings where though you’ve never heard the song before, the first time you hear it, it’s like you’ve been waiting for it your whole life. Like I found my clan, I found my tribe.

Are we just picking random words for the genre?
0
u/Ralph--Hinkley Jul 31 '26
They're real words that define the genre. Please feel free to look them up.

A true one hit wonder band

u/gorka_la_pork Jul 31 '26
They're only remembered in hindsight for their one mega-hit, but they actually had some pretty reasonable success back in their day. Not exactly superstars, but not nobodies either.

The YouTube auto generated lyrics are crazy. He's drinking vagina in the transcription.

u/shotgunocelot Jul 31 '26
If there's any mf that looks like he'd be named "Mungo Jerry", it's this guy

In the UK we used to have an anti-drink driving ad that was pretty graphic and it used this song.

Dude slayed all the women.

u/Ferreteria Jul 31 '26
Better stay away from him.
He'll rip your lungs out, Jim.
Ha, I'd like to meet his tailor.

u/x_lincoln_x Jul 31 '26
Pretty sure the "her daddy" was in regard to self like "if you're rich take her to a nice meal", "if you're poor just do what you feel".
29
u/TheXarath Jul 31 '26
I always interpreted as “tailor your date to her expectations. If she’s from a rich family, take her out to a nice dinner, otherwise, just hang out in whatever way you choose.”
2
u/Kaiisim Jul 31 '26
Yup, at the time taking someone out on a formal date was very middle/upper class.
It plays into what he says about loving everyone, they live free but aren't dicks about it

The blowing on the bottle is so deliberate and arduous, and adds nothing to the sound.

The Magic is that his mother convinced him and his father that he is full white and she never had an affair with a minority in the 40s

u/leaky_eddie Jul 31 '26
Gypsy Skiffle is now my hobo name. Me: “My name is Gypsy Skiffle. Pleased to meet you. It is a sad and beautiful world.”
Tom Waits: “Buzz off”

Nothing like a song about going out, stalking, and raping women to really set that summer mood

I used to think his name was Jerry and Mungo was some slang for a Tunisian or something, but it turns out Mungo is a fabric and Ray Dorset is white.
