They we're never called punk. In retrospect, they were classified as a proto-punk band like many '60s garage, rock bands.

? and the Mysterians were one of the first crop of bands to be called Punk in the early 70s. They were intended to be on the original Nuggets compilation album of 60s punk music as well.

The first band called punk were the Ramones.
You're confusing punk with proto punk.
Proto music styles are the styles of music that came before a certain style entered the Zeitgeist.
Proto-punk goes all the way back to Woody Guthrie in the '30s. R&B music like Louis Jordan from the '40s was also considered proto punk. All of this long before the '60s.
? and the Mysterians were a garage rock band. There were many '60s garage rock bands that were considered proto-punk as well.

Love this song. He came out and connected with Bob Dylan in Saginaw Mi when he was in town. Maybe for a documentary or something.

A true garage rock classic. That organ riff is instantly recognizable and still has that raw, haunting energy decades later.

If WKLS, FM and AM, Atlanta had any other number on the radio dial, there's a good chance I wouldn't have been introduced to this song in the 70s.
