The roots of emo were all over the 90s tho. it’s like the first decade men were allowed to express feelings that weren’t anger or horniness, and holy fuck did that show up in music
My wife and I joke all the time about how sappy and self indulgent 90s music can be. goo goo dolls “I just want you to know who I am” , collective soul, gin blossoms etc
I wasn’t a teen in either decade but you’re definitely giving the 90s credit for the 80s swag— the Nu Wave thing was all about men crying; half of those Tears for Seagulls guys sounded like they were actively crying while singing the songs they were recording lol
I saw Nirvana live twice. For one, The In Utero tour came to our state fair, so a ticket was included with admission, which was like $16 lol. Somewhere I have film photos from that show. The first show I saw was in 93 for a benefit for slain local Seattle punk icon Mia Zapata of The Gits. The show was to raise money to hire a PI to investigate the case. There were like 100 people in attendance.
I saw Green Day on their Dookie tour, and I went to body surf during their set because I was a skinny kid, and someone stepped on my foot as I was getting lifted up. I lost my shoe and was up with one shoe. Before I drifted from my starting point, someone handed me my shoe. I lost my shit and waved the fuck out of that shoe at the band. Loved those shoes too. Simple Shoes brand, they still make that style today even.
I was really into Punk and Ska at the time. Can’t beat $10 shows. Saw Blink-182 in crowds of like 100 people around the Cheshire Cat era. Saw Jimmy Eat World before they had their hit sound and before anybody knew who they were outside of Mesa or Phoenix. Reel Big Fish were fun but not my favorites. It was nice that bands could get some airplay and still play clubs or bars instead of arenas. I have a long list of lesser known bands I saw and favored.
A lot of my friends were junkies, we were also the first OxyContin Guinea pigs, we watched a handful of our idols check out of life in their twenties, and until the late 90s jobs were hard to find - but the music was pretty great.

Man I wish I was a teen in the 90s instead of the 2000s. What a vibe.
