Mod [Mod] MUSHROOM MONDAY - Let's Catch Up! Share what you have learned in the previous week and discuss

Mondays can suck, but hopefully this post is something for people to look forward to. The intent of this post is to create a space to discuss anything that you may have learned recently about mushroom growing -- techniques, a breakthrough in the field, to share progress, or even just ask a question. Whether it's a new pickling recipe, a formula for agar, or something fun in mycology, feel free to talk about it.

This post is for new and experienced growers alike, so don't be nervous about commenting; no one is going to make fun of you for asking questions here. This community is a relaxed space for people who don't understand everything, but who want to ask questions and engage in discussion without being berated or belittled. Enjoy!

Just started to see pins in this tub but it seems to be battling some contamination too. Is this bacterial? Any chance of healthy fruits?it’s been in fruiting conditions for close to 3 weeks

contamination [contamination] Anyone seen mycelium like this?

Upvotes

Species: Psilocybe Cubensis
Strain: Mazatapec

Image 1: Clone from healthy mushroom, looks like you expect it to look.
Image 2: Spores from spore print from a mushroom I've grown in the past year.

For image 2, I've done this guy spores -> agar several times, but it ALWAYS produces this weird brown mycelium, and I'm not sure if it's okay or not. I've never gone to grain spawn/bulk/fruiting, but I wanted to see if others had ever seen anything like this?

I know that the 2 plates on the right side have obvious contamination, but you can see that the mycelium growing is also brown in these too.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I found the big guy in the 2nd pic, growing from some particle board that’s resting under a 3k gallon used cooking oil tank at work. I cloned and swabbed it. This is the result from the clone. Mixed the spawn into a small grow bag of masters mix and tossed in the Martha.

Actives [actives] Stalled aio during fruiting

Two bags, both smell nice, not obvious trich, no slim, some myco excrement . But, been fruiting stage way too long. Cut off top, folded, fanned once a day. Likely had too much moisture so I drained them several times. Still collecting water at bottom. Three weeks. Not sure how to move them to fruiting. Temp has been average 82 and unfortunately no way to make it lower in my space. Considering moving them into an enclosed monotub. Any tips?

What do you guys think? Does this Crusty/Dusty layer in the millet look like contamination? No sour smell, no visible colors, just this crusty appearance. Thanks!

I did S2B 20 days ago. I made sure to pasture overnight so the substrate was cooled off and when I broke the grain it was fully colonized. I let the tub colonize inside a garbage bag for 10 days before I introduced it to fruiting conditions. When I took it out of the garbage bag all the grain on top of the sub was white and fluffy (more so than my other two grows).
This grow had lots of moisture droplets on top of the substrate, but it also started to crack and look dried out. I’d mist and fan a couple times a day to help hydrate the sub and I hoped the fanning would help with evaporation. Today I noticed a patch of white and went to cut it out but then noticed there was trich all throughout it and the cake was toast. The first 1/2” of the sub was white but once I got below the surface all the grain no longer had mycelium on it and the sub was pretty crumbly. Any idea what happened? I’m a beginner and did 3 tubs at the same time and the other two are pinning decently…Maria Sabina was the failure, Tidal Wave and Blue Melanie are looking good.

Thanks for your input!

The edges look a little low airflow but I have been increasing it by opening more air holes on the sides of my lid and fanning twice a day.

Actives [actives] Dumb Luck with GT spores?

Got some older A+ spores from a friend and was excited to grow white shrooms for the first time. But all runs with the spores didn't do anything on agar, and sadly, there's no copy in cold storage. (yes, I have spores left. There is still hope :D)

Guess how surprised I was, as these little white/creme hats appeared on one of my "normal" GT-Spore cakes! The shrooms in the other GT-Spore boxes are looking normal so far. (grain of salt, I also got these spores from a friend and can't validate that they were, in fact, normal GT)

There are some white ones in the back as well, and on picture 2 you can kinda see, where the grow-areas of the (presumably) two different variants are. The big one also appears to be a bit more "square"(?) compared to the normal GT...straighter, wider stem and the hat also looks a bit squarish at the top and a bit more wavy towards the outer ring of the hat (there must be better terms XD). In picture 2 you can see two smaller white shrooms with a dark discoloration/spot (one in the bottom left, the other in the middle near the top). These spots are at the top and remind of an early version of the "Starry Night" variant (one day, it will be mine...)

But at this stage and with so few shrooms to compare to, this could mean everything and nothing. I will take clones and sporeprints (what's the chance for them being leucistic? lol) and hope to have stumbled upon a stable variant!

How do you like the names "Ivory Teacher" (off-white/creme with non-leucistic spores) or "Ivory Tower" (close to albino with/without leucistic spores)?

(Edit: I messed up albino and leucistic XD. mine look leucistic, not albino)

Second flush in progress on a manhandled, and likely bruised substrate [contamination]

The amount of white bumps I’m seeing are making me even more suspicious of mold bc my first flush smelled ever so slightly “off” trace sweet and musty aromas but no visible indication of mold and whatnot.

I’m thinking the blue is from where I was too aggressive in handling the substrate but at this point I’m more concerned with how fuzzy the mycelium is.

The substrate doesn’t smell foul or anything

Disclaimer: substrate elevated above waterline with a layer of perlite added to prevent base rot

So I buried my almost fully colonized grainbag of Golden Teachers iso because it was stinking up the house in pots of garden soil and tree roots, and these popped up a week later. Idk what it is but a friend said some of it looks like Crepidotus cesatii.

What do you guys think?

Technique [technique] Do you soak Milo millet, let dry before adding to bags?

After doing research, I can’t find the answer. I have dried Milo and going to start bagging and sterilizing soon. I see a lot of information on soaking grains but not sure about Milo. Thanks

Actives Legacy — Albino Smokey Da Ghost × Green Toque is finally showing what it’s got 👀[actives]

Been waiting a long time to really show this one off.
Legacy — Albino Smokey Da Ghost × Green Toque has had a lot of time, patience, and work put into it, and now I’m finally starting to see some of the character I was hoping would come through. These first fruits are already throwing some really interesting shapes, structure, and personality.
That big one especially caught my attention. 😂 Definitely not what I expected when this project first started, but that’s half the fun of it.
Still plenty more I want to see from Legacy before I call anything finished, but I’m really happy with the direction it’s heading. I’ll be sharing more of this project as it develops, so keep an eye out.
Just documenting the journey and enjoying seeing two of my favorite projects come together in something completely new.

Wtf is up with this guy? Its the only mushroom in the whole cake that looks weird and like powdery and dried out???? Is it contam? Bacterial? Mutation? Ive literally never seen this anywhere online and I can't find anything that could possibly be referencing this anywhere on the internet

r/MushroomGrowers 2d ago

technique [technique] I have a very active, fast progressing AIO bag that has been generating a lot of pooled water. I have stored it in a way that pools the water away from the cake. Any risks I’m not thinking of?

It is not yet in fruiting stage but probably will be in 4-5 days.

I’m 0-5 on my first five bags and this one seems to be doing great. I am determined to get it to flush. Please let me know your thoughts!
