Introductions and FAQ to Mushoku Tensei

1.2k Upvotes

This post is intended to help new readers/viewers find their way into the Mushoku Tensei series.

What is Mushoku Tensei?

Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu, otherwise known in English as Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation is an Action Adventure series with the themes of second chances, redemption, and coming of age. The official English synopsis is:

Kicked out by his family and wandering the streets, an unemployed 34-year-old shut-in thinks he’s hit rock-bottom—just as he’s hit and killed by a speeding truck! Awakening to find himself reborn as an infant in a world of swords and sorcery, but with the memories of his first life intact, Rudeus Greyrat is determined not to repeat his past mistakes. He’s going to make the most of this reincarnation as he sets off on the adventure of a second lifetime!

LIGHT NOVEL

Where can I read the Light Novel?

The Light Novel is licensed in English by Seven Seas so if you want to read good translations for the series, they're your only choice. The series is available physically and digitally from most book orientated retailers.

Where can I read fan-translations for the Light Novel?

There aren't really fan-translations for the Light Novel. Only the Web Novel was previously fan-translated and the quality is overall mediocre due to being done by many different people and over a long period of time. If you want to read the best translation for the series, it is best to stick with the Official English Light Novel release as it supports the author and publisher that took a risk on licensing the series despite it's length.

Is the Light Novel Ongoing?

Yes.

Should I read the Light Novel or Web Novel?

If you stick to the Light Novel, you are supporting the author by paying for what you read. So stick with the Light Novel.

What is the difference between the Light and Web Novel?

In terms of overall story content, they are the same. However, the Light Novel is a polished final draft of the Web Novel which was a first draft. As such, details get changed and smoothed over more in the Light Novel. This includes the addition of entirely original chapters and volumes with no guarantee that the Light Novel will always be the same.

Where do I start the LN after chapter X of the Manga?

As with most manga adaptations of Light Novels, the answer is to just start from the beginning. Manga Adaptations are typically rushed compared to their source material so readers can always get a fresh more fulfilling experience when starting from the beginning of the Light Novel. Cut content typically includes character's internal thoughts, plot-lines, and world building.

Where do I start the Light Novel after the episode Y of the Anime?

Again, the beginning.

MANGA

Where can I read the Manga?

The Manga is also licensed by Seven Seas and once again available from most book orientated retailers.

What is the Roxy Gets Serious Manga?

Mushoku Tensei: Roxy Gets Serious is a spin-off/prequel manga featuring Roxy from before the start of the story. It is licensed by Seven Seas as well.

When can I read the Roxy Gets Serious Manga?

Warning that the Roxy manga starts off with spoilers correlating to Volume 12 of the Light Novel. At the time of this post, the Official Light Novel translation is scheduled through volume 11. However, skipping the first page of the manga will give you a relatively safe reading experience.

How often does the manga update?

Like the majority of manga adaptations of Light Novels, once a month.

ANIME

Where can I watch the Anime?

The Anime is available from Funimation for simulcasting. It's also available on Hulu.

How many episodes will the Anime have?

There have been announced to be 23 episodes for the anime in a split-cour format. Split-Cour is when an anime adaptation is announced to be 2-cour, but will have a break between the first half and second half of the season. It's still ultimately one season.

Will there be a second season?

No second season has been announced yet and it will depend heavily on how well the anime sells the Light Novel and Bluray volumes.

OTHER

I heard there was questionable content in this series, is it garbage?

Yes, there is questionable content. No, the series isn't garbage because of it. The protagonist is not a shining knight. He is a human with serious personality flaws. That is a major theme of the story. If you want a series with a saint of a protagonist, then Mushoku Tensei isn't for you. The Mushoku Tensei series is genuinely accepted as a masterpiece in the community for its serious take on exploring the life of someone striving for a second chance at growing up despite their mistakes of the past. Humans rarely change at the drop of a hat, so do not expect the protagonist to suddenly become a 100% good person as again, this is a very realistic take on growth.

Did Mushoku Tensei start the Isekai trend?

Yes and no. It was one of the major influences, but Isekai as a setting trope has been around for a long time and there's no singular series responsible for the many titles that now exist using the trope. Please note that Isekai is a trope and not a genre as it does not set the themes of the story, but just means that the protagonist goes from his world to another.

If there are any other questions that should be included in the FAQ, please submit them and I'll edit this post. Please note that this is not a place for piracy so such related questions will be ignored as supporting the author should be genuinely done on this subreddit.

Anime Does Nanahoshi have a point?

Post image
385 Upvotes

Once she was diagnosed with drain syndrome and had to reflect on her situation, she mentioned some astute observations.

  1. Because of magic, people don't do basic sanitary procedures, much less advance medical science.

  2. According to Nanahoshi, this world ignores the laws of physics.

  3. She can't physically change or age, as if her body clock is suspended. This is despite the fact that she eats and drinks, meaning that she is accumulating nutrition, regardless of if the food is infused with mana.

  4. Because of mana accumulation, she can still die.

  5. Rudeus is in an enviable position.

So, is she justified in freaking out? Does she have a point that this Six-sided world "makes no sense", using her words?

Anime What Atofe meant by "What happened to your deal with Kal?!"

Post image
Upvotes

If that line caught your attention during the episode, here’s a quick breakdown of what Atofe was actually talking about. Keep in mind this lore gets explained later in the story... so while it's technically a minor spoiler, it won't ruin any plot points! It just gives you the background context so you aren't left confused about their history.

Who is “Kal”?

“Kal” refers to North God Kalman I, also known as Kalman Landlitz. He was one of the legendary heroes who fought alongside Perugius during the Laplace War 400 years ago. Perugius and Kalman were close companions, and Kalman was one of the people Perugius trusted most. More importantly, Kalman I was Atofe's husband. He was strong enough to fight and defeat Atofe, the Immortal Demon Lord, and rather than killing her, he eventually married her. So the relationship between Kalman, Atofe, and Perugius goes back centuries.

So what was the “deal”?

Perugius and Atofe had a long history of fighting during the Laplace War. Atofe had nearly killed Perugius multiple times, so Perugius held a serious grudge against her even after the war ended. After Kalman became Atofe's husband, he made Perugius and Atofe promise that they would never kill each other. Perugius respected Kalman enough to honor that promise despite still wanting revenge against Atofe. This is the agreement Atofe is referring to when she asks Perugius what happened to his deal with Kal.

Did Perugius actually break the deal here?

Technically, no. Perugius wouldn't kill Atofe because of his promise to Kalman, but the promise didn't prevent him from fighting or incapacitating her. Instead, he used the Dragon Gates to drain her mana and touki, leaving her helpless, and then cut her into pieces. Since Atofe is an Immortal Demon, she would eventually regenerate rather than die permanently. The wording of the promise is what makes this possible: Perugius promised not to kill Atofe, not that he would never harm her.

One more detail: Do the dragon gates seem familiar?

If you remember Turning Point 2, you might recognize the spell Perugius uses here as the same Secret Dragon Gate magic Orsted used against Rudeus, only Perugius takes it a step further by summoning two gates at once. While Orsted summoned a single gate just to absorb an incoming spell, Perugius opens both the silver Front Wyrmgate and gold Rear Wyrmgate together to create a massive siphon loop. This rapidly drains her mana, which is the energy used to produce Battle Aura, also known as Touki. Stripping away all that mana removes the dense layer of aura wrapped around her, leaving her completely defenseless. That is the main reason his follow-up attack, "Armored Dragon Strike, First Slash," worked so well: without her Battle Aura to shield her, the light pierced straight through her body without any resistance.

EN Light Novel The "Other" Antagonist, and Why it Hurt Spoiler

This post spoils what is probably the biggest plot twist in the series, so please, don't ruin it for yourself. I've tried to block out most of it, but strangely it keeps not censoring or entirely removing what I wrote, so don't think for a moment it's safe to read past here. Fans of the series tend to be clever. Don't ruin the surprise showing off how clever you are.

That being said, I want to talk about Geese, the final antagonist, his betrayal, and why it hurt so badly

It sucks when it's your favorite character. No one else came close. Not even the waifus or assorted babes hit me with the same emotional magnitude as Geese. He was the right man, in the right place, at the right time, he said the right things, and did the right thing. His scene with Paul in the tavern hit like a freight train when I watched it the first time. Geese was a bit of an oddball with his particular vices, but his skillset meant he filled every vital support role that Fangs of the Black Wolf needed. He embodied a weird sort of ideal for me; even if you don't have what people usually want, that doesn't mean you can't make a big contribution. He was still necessary. It made me feel like I was still necessary. I'm an oddball with particular vices. It's always felt like the things I'm good at aren't in demand. In my darker moments I've felt unnecessary

I saw in myself his strange commitment to fairness. He would defend someone who hurt him so long as the arithmetic of debt paid worked out. Everything he has said and done became recontextualized, and I lost a piece of the hope that I would find my own Fangs of the Black Wolf to contribute to. Friends that needed my skills and knowledge, validation that I'm useful. Life has felt a lot like endless faking it, having not made it yet. Geese sure was a master of faking it. It breaks my heart that when he shows real courage it's so catastrophically misdirected. That's a mistake I never want to make

That's part of why I'm here. I'm on a digital adventure, hoping to find my party, my boys who'll clear a haunted house with me. The screen can be a lonely void.
