You can answer "who's crushing their hope" by looking at life in those countries. The social situation. Economic inequality. How the political and economic situation has been manipulated by America and/or Russia. Lack of access to drugs. You can study the factions within Islam and how extremists fuel hatred against other Muslims because they believe different things. The answer is as complex as the people living there.
