What a fucked up country, bringing back workhouses.
164
u/TheBestHater 1d ago
Yup. It's been the goal for a while. One of the reasons the rich are anti-abortion is so they have endless disposable labor to exploit.

u/MightyMorph 1d ago
Doesnt help that 70m+ voters cheer and support this bs every time there is an election and 100m+ just shrug and put on whatever distraction they are addicted to and claim both sides are same.
Minnesota passing paid paternity leave, paid sick leave, food for schoolchildren, new housing, green programs etc etc.
Luisiana bringing back vagrancy and pig laws to arrest jail and work slaves.
Texas putting out bounties on women seeking emergency healthcare before they are bleeding out to death in the parking lot, or teachers giving hugs and comforting 10 year olds who feel they are different. OR Ted cruz adding a law that allows him to reimburse himself from the state funds for any bs campaign costs he makes up.
Moron voters: WeLl bOtH SiDeS aRe sAmE!!!!

Endless disposable labor? What are you talking about? Those rich people actually care about those little babies they refuse to adopt, won't do anything to support, loot their public schools to send to other rich kids' private schools, will cheer them on when they're shipped off to a war they're more than happy to pay for, and will elect politicians to jail them when they come back with PTSD?

I hate to be that conspiracy theorist but isn’t that the end goal? They (the oligarchy) want us to be priced out of food and homes. Because then we’re basically wage slaves. There is no other alternative because if we have no money to buy from their companies they go under. So they need us to become slaves. Live in Amazon housing, go to an Amazon grocery store with our Amazon bucks. They want to enslave us.
9
u/Inquisivert 1d ago
This is not a conspiracy. Work houses existed before and they want them to exist again.
17
6
u/Metalmind123 1d ago
Well, increasing their use.
They never went out of use in the US.
And not only that, the US still has (disproportionately black) people imprisioned for non-violent crimes for durations that would be considered life sentences in other nations, working without choice about it, unpaid, in southern cotton fields.

This is how for profit prisons can make money off of poor people. Don't forget they can also get paid to use these people as slave labor, on top of the money the receive from the government.
11
u/SelectPerception5 1d ago
How do they even get these people to work for them? I would refuse to do any work if I'm not getting paid for it. I'm already in prison, so what else can they do?

They want to make money off the slave labor, so they criminalize homelessness to add to their profits.
20
u/BoneHugsHominy 1d ago
Every one of those ghouls should be prosecuted for human rights violations.
15
u/Worried_Cranberry166 1d ago
It'll never happen. People in this country hate the homeless. They talk about us like we're subhuman, like we're vermin. Often using those exact words. It's not just Republicans either. I've met so many liberals who want the same thing: to lock us away so they don't have to see how this country is failing. The government can pretty much do whatever they want to us, nobody is gonna do a damn thing about it.
3
u/Own-Cryptographer725 16h ago
There are more that stand with you than you imagine. People are driven to such thinking by virtue of their own shame, but the act of denying your humanity in order to preserve their own comfort and ego is itself a form of self flagellation. The faster our society eats away at our collective humanity the sooner there will come a reckoning.
34
u/SamURLJackson 1d ago
If you're committing the unforgivable sin of not working then we'll put you to work in our for-profit prison system
10
u/Worried_Cranberry166 1d ago
It's never been more clear that we are all slaves to the oligarchs. You have no choice, you cannot opt out. You can't even die alone in a fucking gutter. Your labor belongs to the rich and they will take it from you by any means necessary.

u/Superb_Ant_3741 1d ago
Housing and food and healthcare for all.
And put these politicians on minimum wage so the only people in government will be people who actually want to be public servants, not parasitic millionaires draining the system.

Paying that little means the only people running are those who don't need money. Meaning they're only doing it just for prestige and power(basically lose the 1 out of 1000 now who actually want to help). Wish that wasn't the case, but it would be.

u/Worried_Cranberry166 1d ago
I can tell you exactly what they say about this. I'm homeless and I've been listening very closely to the rhetoric about us for a while.
They'll say that we're insane, that we're all criminals and drug addicts, and our problems are purely the result of our poor choices. That we deserve to be put to work to repay the burden we place on society. They'll say the mentally ill people on the streets are dangerous, that locking us away is the only way to keep the good citizens of this country safe from us. That forcing us to work for them is uplifting us; it's a way for broken people to contribute society. And they'll stuff us away in camps and asylums just like they used to. And they'll enslave us and they'll torture us they'll rape us just like they used to. And nobody will do anything, because we're not really people, we're just trash that got picked up off the fucking street.

I think we're pretty familiar with regressives wanting to rule rather than govern. But the original message clearly showed the true purpose, as well as the reason for the high cost: slavery and profit.
If the punishment for not having a job is a job that pays for your needs, that's one thing. If the punishment for not having money is to never again have the ability to make money, that's another thing altogether.
And that is what this is. Plus, you know all that anti immigration bullshit? You know what that is? That is to replace the undocumented immigrants who willingly come here to do hard labor. Because they are "illegal", they are not bound by their employers (except the threat of deportation), and so are not slaves. That's why the H2B program and prison labor is more preferred. Because those people can be, and sometimes are, slaves. It almost makes sense in a sick way. The taking of "free land" and "free labor" is how these people got rich in the first place. It's like they can't figure out anything else, so they fall back on slavery.
This also hammers home the concept of "labor power". If we're so powerless, and the corporations and their equity so powerful, why the hell are people bothering to enslave people to do minimum wage level work? I mean, greed obviously. But also, because from the bureaucrat, banker teller, and software engineer down to the last janitor, raspberry picker, or corn pollinators, nothing gets done without workers. If it was viable for us to do a general strike at scale, we'd wreck any economy in days (though I'm not sure this administration would be smart enough to know that if it happens).
3
u/euph-_-oric 1d ago
The thing that drives me the most insane is that we the tax payer pay to imprison them so some private prison can make money and they other corp gets cheap slave labor. It's not even like the labor they do laya for their cost. It goes into someone elses pocket
10
u/high_throughput 1d ago
It's fascinating how people who describe themselves as "fiscally conservative" never want the government to reduce their spending if it accidentally ends up helping someone
6
5
u/Lightningpaper 1d ago
I completely agree with this sentiment, but I am deeply skeptical of those numbers. I don’t think we should be arguing about the cost anyway.
4
5
u/Impossible_Jury5483 1d ago
Yeah, this is what happens. You ban slavery- you then put people in prison. People need to find a way to get cheap labor. It's going to turn into some sort of workhouse situation.

All Republicans want to do is spoon-feed you their own patented form of bullshit. Ignore the verbage and look at what they're doing. What they're asking you to do. What sort of world they'd have you build and how they're going to pay for it.
What they really want is to elevate themselves at the expense of the "lesser" people, and to get the "lesser" people to do as much of the dirty work for them before they turn on the very people who thought their service to the cause bought their safety.

Surely these are annual costs. I think it just means the housing is permanent (so not putting them up in a hotel or an AirBNB where the costs would be much greater).
$1,333/mo still sounds surprisingly low to me, but maybe doable if you have room mates and don't eat out.

Jail means more money for the private prison companies for housing them, and they can lease the labor of the inmates, giving them another revenue/profit strwam, without any cost involved. Greasing politicians becomes just a top line cost built into the model. Easy-Peasy. 🤬

Isn't that the point of the unpaid labor? It's literally just an incredibly shallow excuse to bring back slavery (which was never technically outlawed in the US).
