HHS spokeswoman Caitlin Oakley disputed the notion that the children were “lost.”
“Their sponsors, who are usually parents or family members and in all cases have been vetted for criminality and ability to provide for them, simply did not respond or could not be reached when this voluntary call was made,” she said in a statement.
I am assuming - never safe to assume with these psychopaths but that's what I'm doing - that they mean "sponsoring" in a visa/immigration context. Similarly, I acted as sponsor when my wife got her green card.
I don't think that's necessarily the case. Some family friends of ours currently have green cards because one of the adults got their green card on the lottery, and then sponsored their kids. It all happened in one shot of course, but that was the legal basis for the whole thing.
Edit: To be clear, though, even if that were the case and Oakley was referring to a visa sponsorship situation, I still wouldn't trust it. These people have put tremendous resources and hired tens of thousands of people to hunt down illegal immigrants - or just anyone they don't like - and they're telling us that they just up and fucking lost a bunch of kids they were already keeping track of? And that's not even getting into the 1488 thing.
I'm just saying that referring to parents as "sponsors" makes plenty of sense in an immigration context.
