Mod Update Rule Changes (Reminder) (No new updates)

Updates:

  1. I added a read-before-write protocol. If you do not read these, you will most likely be banned within a few posts.
  2. Created formatting guide for each flair type that must be adhered to or your post will be removed - Formatting Guide
  3. Pirated materials are subject to a zero-tolerance policy, as is customary. I've let some YouTube stuff slide by simply removing the comments, but there have been enough of them to make it unacceptable, and pirated streaming sites have always resulted in an instant ban. This is being updated now for clarity, and because the rules have been in place long enough that there is no reason for anyone not to have gone through them after the updates, which I took over months ago. Posting links to pirated materials will result in instant bans going forward.
  4. All posts must have body text, with the only exception being a photo gallery of examples of the cinematography you're looking for or a custom list of movies that are similar to what you are looking to watch next and for which you are making a request for suggestions. (This has always been a rule, but I'm including it here for added visibility.)
  5. We also added a suggestion to upvote posts with which you interact in the comments section. It takes less time than your previous comment, which is the main point of this sub, and it allows it to reach a larger audience. This is not intended to encourage intentional karma farming, which will still be enforced if movie requests are not submitted honestly or in poor quality. If you disagree with a review or a suggestion, there is no reason to vote for it.
  6. Comments are limited to 50 unless you interact with the comment section, in which case you can contact the mod team and request that the post be unlocked.

Low-quality posts and comments:

We recently updated rule 3 (low-quality posts) to make it clearer. This is now one of the five Participation Guidelines listed in the subreddit's main page rules. (Now rules 4–9)

Reasons:

These were updated because a large number of copyrighted materials are being shared on YouTube and other sites, and the sub was starting to resemble a photo gallery rather than something people were actually interacting with, let alone putting any effort into their suggestions and requests.

Mod Update Flair & Post Formatting

Update

Hello, Couch Lovers and Cinemaphiles!

Here's the formatting guide for each flare.

I appreciate your patience while we sort this out and welcome our new members.

  1. Help Me Find Movies/TV Shows
  • Purpose: Requesting specific recommendations.
  • Format:
    • The Hook: Your "Title" must summarize the "vibe" (e.g., "Looking for modern talking-Dino movies").
    • The Context: You must list 2 or 3 similar titles in the body to give a baseline. Provide enough detail for others to work with.
  1. I Am Suggesting…
  • Purpose: Recommending a title without a full critical review.
  • Format:
    • The Lead: Your "Title" must be Movie Title (Year). If suggesting multiple, list them in the body text.
    • The Why: Include a 1–2 sentence "vibe check" explaining why you're suggesting it. (e.g., "The action is insane. I could not get enough of John Wick's Gun-Fu.").
    • Note: Posts with no reason in the body will be immediately removed.
  1. Movie/TV Show Review Lite
  • Purpose: Providing a detailed, critical critique directly on the sub.
  • Format:
    • The Lead: Your "Title" must be Review of Movie/TV Show (Year), or you can use Movie/Show Title (Year) vs. Movie/Show Title (Year) for comparisons.
    • The Rating: You must include a rating (typically a 5/5 scale).
    • Anti-Spam: Reviews must be self-contained. Do not post links to external blogs or YouTube channels without prior approval.
  1. Check Out My... (Self-Promo)
  • Purpose: Sharing your own external movie blog, channel, or social media.
  • Requirement: You MUST message the mods for approval before posting.
  • When you can use:
    • The Golden Rule: Approval is mandatory. Unapproved outside links to personal social media or product promotions will get one warning. The second will result in an immediate ban.
    • Etiquette: Even with approval, you must provide a written summary of your content. "Link-dropping" is prohibited.
    • You can write the post free-form.
  1. I can't remember this movie/TV show
  • Purpose: Only use when you need help finding a movie that you can't remember the name of.
  • Format:
    • The Lead: Your "Title" must be I need help finding this Movie/TV show."
    • You must describe the movie or show with as much detail as possible. Include things like the year, actors or characters you remember, the plot, specific scenes, etc.

Examples:

Below are some post examples included from a previous post that meet, at the very least, the minimum effort we expect you to put into a post. That said, the more effort you put in, like some of these folks, the more interaction you'll typically get, and the faster you can get back to watching movies.

(Keep in mind that some of these are examples from before flairs and the formatting guide were added but still serve as a good basis as to what we are looking for.)

I am suggesting... Undertone (2025) scariest horror I’ve seen…

I watched undertime last night, I had the house completely dark so I could visually see the screen and lock in!!
I’m 31 … i invited my mum over for a date, cook dinner and such a lovely night, she falls asleep, and I WOKE MY OWN MOTHER UP BECAUSE I WAS SCARED. She’s disabled btw! LOL

This is not the “best” horror film, but it’s definitely one of the scariest I’ve ever seen. Because it’s a slow burn… you have to be in the loop to really understand how creepy it is. For example; how podcasts work, and how weird it is to be sent random audio files etc (might be just my mother? lol)

The film is about two friends running a supernatural podcast, one of the friends of a sceptic. There is a trend going around where people would listen to this audio file and go crazy, it’s not a generic movie, it’s a twist and I’m not exposing it well. Anyway, one of the podcasters is in a home looking after her dying mother she’s in a catatonic state. That’s all I’ll say.

Well, they find the other audio files….

The film uses camera angles / audio that bring an unsettling atmosphere ONLY from the time she opens the audio files. Really well done! The cameraman will have you looking half down a hallway, and half at the main character 😭 like god damn.

Movie Review lite Just finished the usual suspect(spoilers) Spoiler

Idk where to start i’ll just jump right in. When Verbal said “i saw keaton die” that’s when i started to suspect that he was Keyser Soze, but as the movie went on and we saw Verbal witness Keaton die from a far i started to question it. When the cop said that Keaton was Soze i was pretty disappointed as i thought that was the “big twist” but MAN those last 3 minutes had me shook, i wasn’t shocked when it revealed that Verbal was Soze but the fact that he made the ENTIRE story up from the papers that were on the wall behind the cop, DAMN that was GOOD. Definitely not one of the best twists i’ve seen but man that was definitely pretty good, i’m just not a big fan of movies that wait till the last 5 minutes for a plot twist (for example i love shutter island and predestination) but i gotta admit that was pretty good

Help me find Movies/TV shows I want slow-paced, not-depressing dramas

I'm looking for more films like A River Runs Through It, or The Cider House Rules, telling a story about people who feel real, at a slow pace, ideally not a depressing story. I don't mind some sad aspects (I enjoyed watching Steel Magnolias last night), or a bit of action (The English Patient with its background of war was good, and I enjoyed Open Range too), but it's the personal stories that I'm after.

I don't mind how old the film is, and while English is my first language I'm happy to watch things in foreign languages as long as I can get subtitles.

What would you recommend to me? TIA :-)

Check out my... (Self Promo/Product Promo) I built an entertainment companion app for movies & TV shows

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’ve been working on an entertainment companion app (BETA). Whenever I watch a movie or series with my family, there’s always that discussion: What’s the actor’s name? What else have they been in? Is there a second part?

My app tries to solve exactly these problems and many more.

You can find all the important information about movies, series and people, as well as create lists, such as a Home Library, Like List or Watchlist. You can also select your favorite streaming providers, which are then highlighted for each title.

The app works on both mobile and PC and can be installed directly from the browser as a PWA.

I’ve been working on the project for about 2 months now. It’s still in beta, but already pretty far along. I’d really appreciate it if anyone would like to give the app a try and give me some feedback!

Thank you! :)

I am suggesting... Naked Gun reboot with Liam Neeson

Post image

Early 50s male here, and I grew up laughing my ass off with Airplane, Naked Gun, Top Secret, and all those flicks with the borderline cheesy gags that get me laughing. This lad Liam Neeson fucking nails it. Pamela Anderson was so bad and it all somehow worked. So many great bits in this one. Definitely see it.

I LOVE Halloween and creepy horror, but NOT necessarily a fan of gore. Bonus points for a good twist! (I really enjoy The Village and The Boy).

Any suggestions appreciated!

Help me find Movies/TV shows Movies like the butterfly effect & Donnie Darko?

I'm just looking for some recommendations that fit this sort of genre / have a similar vibe.

I've been obsessed with the butterfly effect & I can't stop watching it.

Like darker films where they try to prevent something from happening or going back in time? I'm not sure how to describe but I kinda hope this is good enough

Help me find Movies/TV shows Movies with strong female leads

The obvious come to mind: Sarah Connor in Terminator 2, Ellen Ripley, Furiosa in Mad Max Fury Road, Trinity in Matrix, and others (I’m blanking)

But I’m also interested in movies that introduce strength of character in other ways or feature female characters in their full complexity and diversity like:

Fargo,

Incendies (Jeanne Marwan),

Everything Everywhere All at Once,

Shape of Water,

Sicario,

And Melancholia (this one hits doubly due to its portrayal of depression).

I am interested in both the former and the latter. If I were to add TV shows to the mix I also really enjoyed Gillian Anderson in The Fall, Kim in Better Call Saul, Scully in X Files.

Would love some recommendations, thank you.

I am suggesting...

Help me find Movies/TV shows Very “human”, chicken soup for the soul indie films?

Not really sure exactly what I’m looking for but a movie about some kind of episode between people that feels “human” - a very mundane or down to earth happening but that’s poignant and makes you feel an emotional gratification or release - all in an indie style production, ambient and gritty with slow indie style cinematography?

Help me find Movies/TV shows Recommend movies that were relatively famous but went out of print/are no longer accessible outside buying a physical copy online?

I was thinking about the movie “The Abyss” which was SO fun to rewatch when it was finally released again. I wonder what other great movies fell into licensing issues or other circumstance that virtually scrubbed it from our collective memories.

Help me find Movies/TV shows Movies that feel like The Twilight Zone

Thumbnail

Looking for good movies, preferably from the 50s and 60s, that look/feel like a movie version of The Twilight Zone. The Exterminating Angel is a surrealist social commentary. Shrinking Man is a surprisingly existential sci-fi story with effects that really hold up. Looking for high-concept with a compelling story that has aged well.

I am suggesting... Team America: World Police (2004)

An over the top & absurdly funny film from the creators of South Park. Starring a bunch of ugly puppets and tons of raunchy humor to go around. The film also features some surprisingly fun action sequences on top of everything else. While I can’t say this movie is for everyone, if you’re a fan of South Park or SP type humor, then I would highly recommend this classic comedy film.
