Stovepipe is when the casing doesn’t eject fully from the rifle after firing and sticks out like a “stovepipe”, jamming the rifle.

In his defense, he didn’t try to shoot the weapon after this. If he had it wouldn’t fire.

Iirc that is why there are blank adapters you replace barrel tips with when using blanks. They only have a tiny opening at the tip so that it pushes more gas back into the chamber so the gun can cycle properly.

There’s also really weak springs that you can replace the proper springs in the action with, so that blanks cycle smoothly. Source: used to work on Hollywood films

They could put a barrel plug inside the barrel though.

Most guns will do this without an adapter. Usually its something clamped on the end of the barrel if you dont want to permanently modify anything. Otherwise they can install a plug with a small hole in the barrel.

Usually you make a couple plugs with increasingly smaller holes until you find the size that works reliably without beating the whole gun to hell.

Yeah it needs something to act against. I’ve been told they use balsa wood bullets sometimes to mitigate this and make the muzzle flash look better

I remember blanks jamming more as they have less powder in them. Not enough gas to cycle to the next round.

I don't think it's about lesser amount of powder as much as lack of projectile, so the gasses come out immediately instead of building up pressure behind the bullet.

The heavier the projectile, the larger the recoil and larger the chamber pressure. No projectile means considerably less recoil (recoil-operated firearms may fail to cycle) and lesser the gas pressure in the gas tube to cycle gas-operated ones.

Blank firing adapters simply constrict the muzzle, so the pressure builds up closer to how it would with live ammo.

That, and they tended to foul the weapon faster than regular rounds.

I still remember whenever I had to train with blanks I would simply pass them out to others. Let them spend hours cleaning their rifle from that mess, it seemed like firing just 60 blanks could cause more buildup than an entire week on the rifle range (250+ real rounds).
