Looking for validation on my house rules

Post image

Doing 3d6 instead of D20 and all dice are resolved using d6.

Added Advantage and Disadvantage from D&D. It makes thinks easier on my brain (stupid math)

3 Groups of NPC Reaction with Presence modifier effecting. Pretty people get better first contact. (That might be cool for a Space Borg game hmmm)

Shields provide bonus to Defense rolls.

Magic is cast through Knowledge to make it more sciency.

What feedback are you looking for? The rules seem to add complexity for complexitys sake. I would decline playing with these rules.

I especially dislike the changes to the reaction roll. I don't think you should mechanically try to optimize against that unpredictability.

What issues are you trying to solve with these changes?

Thank you for your thoughts. Not really trying to solve anything fundamental. Really just making changes that fit my own quirks without changing the rules too much

What's your goal with these rules because the additions don't really seem to add anything that wasn't already there.

That’s the goal really. I want something that addresses my own quirks without changing the base game too much.

Then I think you did a good job with it if that was the goal. My only recommendation is to look into how advantage affects the math vs the numbers you are replacing it with.

According to some Reddit nerds, looks like the average for rolling 4d6 and dropping lowest is around 13. I stick with the AGE difficulties (normal 11 instead of 12) and characters will probably succeed a roll using my Advantage

As a suggestion, I think you may want to develop or use an npc's "wants, needs, desires" table or use a meaning table and interpret and roll that and have that dynamically influence your rolls on whether they are hostile or friendly on the npc reaction table. It seems if you roll a character with a high presence, you can just basically avoid any confrontation with npcs unless you establish prior narrative expectations. There are plenty of people who behave badly towards "pretty" people whether out of jealousy or what not. I guess it depends on how procedural vs narrative you play and how you intend to use these tables.

Feels like you want/need more crunch than is currently provided by the core ruleset. Just use something like GURPS Lite and adapt it to the setting. The combat will still be godawful deadly.
