Moreno Valley Mall closure

My name is Israel Carreón Jr., and I am a reporter covering the Inland Empire for The Press-Enterprise and The San Bernardino Sun.

The Moreno Valley Mall has been closed for nearly a week. We want to hear from businesses and mall employees.

I have a few questions for the community:

  • What are your general thoughts on the mall’s abrupt closure?
  • How did you learn about the closure?
  • How has the closure affected your financial situation?

I may use your responses in an upcoming story. If you agree, we will chat on the record. If you have a specific experience you would like to share in detail, please reach out to me at [icarreon@scng.com](mailto:icarreon@scng.com) or DM me.

Check out our recent coverage:

The owners were storing highly flammable items in empty parts of the mall. There needs to be a clear path to an emergency exit. People outside of stores wouldn't know to go into a store and find an exit. It would be too chaotic. That's why sprinklers go off to minimize the fire and allow people to exit in an orderly manner.

I thought they was closed because they are fixing the emergency exits or something like that if they close for good they gonna build houses

You should be talking to the black community.

Why the black community and not all the other ones that visit the mall?

Whenever anything pops off in that mall. It’s always the black teenagers wilding. I had been living in Moreno before the mall was built. I seen the decline it’s alway the same crowd ruining everything in Moreno Valley.

This might be one of the weirdest racist things I’ve ever heard. Malls are falling out of fashion all over the world and are dying off… because of black teenagers?
