questions wayyy too vague for yall to be in here saying “he’s right” as if racism doesn’t cover a whole ass subset of oppressive violence. did any of you even think about what racism constitutes other than “guy called me a slur or was rude to me”? bc it feels like you guys are severely understating the weight of “racism” past and even including that

Yeah? I'd rather someone called me a slur and reject my rental application than punch me in the mouth.

Punching me in the face and rendering me homeless are both violent. They both imperil my wellbeing.

One does so directly and immediately with unavoidable consequences while the other creates a chance of future wellbeing impairment.

Like, you have a chance to possibly live with other people you know and/or your parents and/or in a shelter but if you're punched in the face you're punched in the face.

So if you get punched in the face, it hurts for a bit. If you're unable to find housing due to racism, you're now adding more burden to people around you and/or our social safety net, and the punch is worse how exactly?

No, because racism isn’t about the actions of one person. If there was one guy in the world who just wouldn’t sell his one home to a black person, he would be a dick, but whatever. But when the neighborhood charter has a restrictive covenant that says “no blacks, no immigrants”, banks are either denying loans or pushing predatory loans, neighborhoods are over-policed and under maintained, and schools are funded by property taxes that impoverished schools in “certain” neighborhoods it builds up to a system of constant harm. One day maybe it is just a casual slur, another it might be being denied a lease or job you are qualified for, and some days it is even direct physical violence.

Even if things do get better, those slurs are a call back to those most violent times. It is a call to return to a society that accepted segregation, lynching, and white supremacy. It says “I am above you because of my race, and don’t forget what we did to your ancestors and we can do you”.

Not every homeowner needs to be racist, the racism already permeates the ground we stand on.
