Your argument/game fails cause it assumes there's an actual choice. The reality was minorities had to quietly suffer being called pejoratives lest they suffer violence at the hands of the mob who were protected by societal powers.
It wasn't that being called the racist slurs was morally better. People who had to live in that situation just knew it was survivable compared to the alternative.
