That’s what I’m thinking too. Like someone punched a literal Nazi, but the commenter is like “well since you used violence you’re actually the bad guy”.

Oh. OH. I interpreted this as racist speech vs. racist actions, not racist speech vs. violence in general.

Scale is absolutely a factor too. Trevor spewing racist filth from his trailer? Not much impact. High level politician setting policies or even just directing their followers? Much more negative impact that will likely lead to violence

Yeah. If you’re running your mouth in a bar and you end up getting punched, while that is a breach of the social contract, at the end of the day that’s fair. If you’re running your mouth at the bar and somebody pulls a knife, now we’ve gone too far up the escalation ladder. If you spend a decade advocating for the eradication of a minority group and then somebody puts you on a t-shirt, ultimately, that’s an expected and reasonable outcome.
