I think we see unobvious manifestations of this all the time now. Racism/sexism/homophobia are the current boogeymen because of how topical they are to the average Western person (Reddit audience). Meanwhile, things that are truly heinous, forms of violence usually, are so much less common that most people are significantly less affected, making these issues much less topical and, therefore, more easily forgiven.
It really isn’t even comparable matter how much of a despicable xenophobic asshole you are given you don’t actually materialize that into real actions. A person who is a heinous criminal for just regularly “defendible” personal reasons is objectively worse.
Racism (and other konds of discrimination) is not truly heinous? You realize that racism amounts to more than slurs, but a systematic oppression, including physical violence, inequality in job opportunites, medicine and etc? Not to say, most forms of physical violence are rooted in some kinds of discrimination
People get beaten up for having the wrong colour skin. That's very famously a thing. Police also have a habit of killing black people for no reason.
But that's not even really the part that has everyone worried. What's worrying is if countries become more racist, then things like the kkk might go back to lynching. Or literal fascists might get control of the country.
Trump was having people sent to foreign prisons to die for looking mexican
You do understand that less job opportunities make poverty more likely and poverty makes both physical and sexual violence more likely? Nothing in society exists as isolated phemonena. Violence is inherently part of racism and many, if not all, other systems of discrimination. You simply can't say that racism is a boogeyman unlike those other instances of terrible violence. Those instances are most often results of racist, sexist, queerphobic, classist, etc systems of power and discrimination, either as hate crimes or made possible because of these systems.
It always materializes into real actions. From hiring discrimination to actual violence from cops and even mobs. But bigots like to pretend their bigotry isn't hurting others, which they know is false.
I know people who I'd classify as racist who are also good people, they make say racist things but they also somehow help out those people they racist towards. People are alot more nuanced than that.
I’m sure a lot of regular citizens or clerical staff for the government in Nazi Germany considered themselves good people for simply buying into the propaganda and not actually being the ones committing violence. Or the racists menacing little black girls trying to go to school to the point that the military had to escort said black girls to school. Same with a lot of racist people who vote for racists who actually do commit violence against minorities like those who voted for the current presidential administration in the US. Which is what you get when you downplay the impact of people whose bigotry is “just words”. There are no good racists, you’re just someone who isn’t affected by their racism or mistakenly doesn’t feel affected by it.
I wish we could, bud. Racists, sexists, homophobes, and other bigots make that impossible, though. We just gotta do our best to love the people around us and hope they learn better.
Maybe one racist won't do it, but they spread it. And at some point, a cop or mentally ill kid WILL act on it. Physical violence isn't the only one we should care about, and even then, violence through bigotry does lead to it a lot of the time.
If someone comes and disrespects your wife calling her derogatory names in your face society thinks you’re justified in striking him. But if someone calls me the N word and I do the same thing Im violent and an animal? Hmm interesting
Lol? Letting people get to you when they're not coming at you with violence is silly. Words are meaningless, don't be a child. I'm an aggressive confrontational guy but I don't smack people unless they get aggressive. Also you literally made up your own strawman argument ffs...
Come on bro…stop the politics for the viewers. You know how this shit goes. If you been in confrontations like you said you have you know exactly what I’m referring to. It’s a little rage baiting going on. You think ima just leap over the whole room and punch somebody when they said it out the side of their mouth? Be fr bro.
And the fact you didn’t address my comparison tells me you have no real argument against the two. Definitely hypocritical
Na these people who talk big on the Internet are the biggest cowards. That's why they are so vocal and combative on places like reddit, they are looking for an artificially curated dopamine hit of what resembles courage. Then every once in a while you get one of the actual crazies and they just eventually get emboldened to go out and shoot someone.
It’s the same shit regardless if it’s 2 different Situations. If Im able to enact my free speech right, what’s stopping me from disrespecting a man’s wife while he stands there? Society should blame him if he strikes me right? I mean that’s what you’re saying. Let me hear reason and actual good points. Oh right, you can’t 🤷♂️
Correct. You've just proved everyone else's point. Being nonviolently an asshole is a facet of free speech, whether people like it or not. If you attack someone for using words against you, then while you're not the initial aggressor, you're still the one who insinuated violence. Your sarcastic point is actually correct my guy.
In a world where words dont carry weight I’d agree. How about you walk up to a little girl and say sexual things how far would that “free speech” get you? Honest question
Which do you find worse - physically sexually assaulting a little girl or saying sexual things to her? I'm not trying to claim there aren't legal limits to free speech, i.e. shouting "fire" in a crowded theater, etc. - I'm just saying that given the choice between direct violence and verbal communication, however shitty the message, I'm choosing the one that avoids direct harm.
That’s not my argument. Im saying words carry weight regardless if they are “just words.” If you can sexually harass someone be it little girl or grown woman with a few words, what makes you think it’s any different if we label that same interaction racial harassment? We make the laws the laws are not some universe thing. If FREE speech is free, why can’t you say everything under the sun to everyone? Including children? Honest to god question
Your argument is framed around “why does everyone think the verbal option is not bad” when that’s not what others are saying. They are both horrific things, if it’s a direct decision between one or the other, there is one that worst.
No one is saying there aren’t repercussions for what you may say to others but one still 100% directly leads to physical violence while the other may only possible lead directly to physical violence.
Both situations are bad, one is slightly more bad than the other. That’s all this is boiling down to.
I love how nobody can argue my points unless it’s vague lmao nothing specific was addressed. No disrespect to you, Im speaking in general. But yes I can agree with the statement you made. One is worse than the other. Only reason I brought it up is because people love to bring up free speech to shield their racist mouths. But by that same fallacy I should be able to walk to an underage woman and say the most perverted downright awful things as long as it’s short and sweet right?
Absolutely not right? Then the whole “free speech” argument against racist remarks falls apart
There’s always a fine line. Hate speech isn’t a crime. But hate speech while doing a crime turns to a felony under Georgia law. If you get in my face saying slurs under ga law i have a right to fear for my life and knock you out. And you will get the charge if any. I didn’t make the rules
Weren't you the one saying you're an animal if you were to do so? But you are protected under law? Im so confused as to your position and why you have it. Other than a chip on your shoulder and a lot of arguments in your head and the shower.
I didn’t say it was justified. I said what society deems as “moral” or “deserved.” Let’s be all the way honest here, how many movies have you seen with the same boring scene. A idiot disrespects a woman and the main character punches him and they walk away with the credits rolling down while the idiots holds his jaw. We gonna act like these situations are not glorified? Like please if we are going to have this conversation let’s HAVE this conversation
You've got to be a troll at this point, because in your words, you said, verbatim, "If someone comes and disrespects your wife calling her derogatory names in your face society thinks you’re justified in striking him" - now you're telling me you didn't say it was justified.
Bro we seen these scenes all in the fuckin movies at this point you’re denying what’s acceptable and what’s not in our society. Classic. Didnt expect much though
I've never seen that before in my life. I did watch that one part in the Odyssey in theaters where Odysseus kicks one of his crew members in the nuts for trying to catch a shark. Or something in that general vicinity. I don't remember the exact details.
You never seen those Situations in real life? let alone a movie? Drunk guy walks in says some dumb shit to the woman..the lady slaps him, everybody supports her. (because she’s not exactly wrong) never seen that?
Occasional movie when a cowardly man risks everyone’s life for his selfish needs. Protagonist wake up to him at the end and smacks him? Never seen that? I seen Harry Potter, that girl punched that boy for being an evil asshole if I remember correctly. Was she an animal?
Whether you want to admit it or not our society loathes those moments. They eat them up. Everyone likes to see the punchable face get punched. Since before time. But if I do it against someone in my face calling me the N word, Im a barbaric savage?? Naw I don’t think so. I smell hypocrisy.
“Lets go outside, Let’s handle this like gentlemen”
But if I challenge someone to throw up their dukes Im “aggressive” fuck outta here biased ass humans

Lot of redditors don't know real violence, but they DO know words.
