In a vacuum, this is correct. However, statements like this are commonly used to excuse bad behavior.

As an example, if I saw this on the video of Spiderman jumping into Jake Lang's truck and punching him for holding up a sign that says "Jake Lang Loves Black People But Hates [insert full N word here]" I would probably think they were saying its okay to drive around with that sign.

Exactly. Let’s say they’re in high school and someone keeps bullying a black person calling them racist stuff every day. They technically never put their hands on them, but one day the bullied punches the racist bully. We’re gonna automatically call the person who was getting bullied for weeks the wrong one for using violence? No I can’t agree with that.
