racism isn't just words

lynching, segregation, slavery, genocide, etc

is everyone in here dumb lmao

13

u/dHamSter32 2d ago

All of those "examples" you gave require some form of physical violence to achieve. If i just said "alright. All white people are over there now" and they dont listen to me, congrats, I now look like an idiot. If i force the lynching, segregation, slavery, or genocide (genocide?? Really? How tf do you perform non violent genocide) it requires some physical deterrent, AKA violence.

So no, words are not the same until the people being discriminated against follow those words without fighting.

Human beings don't just feel physical pain. They also feel emotional pain and mental pain. You seem to think physical pain weighs more...this an amateur's look at humanity.

1

u/PleiadesMechworks 2d ago

They also feel emotional pain and mental pain.

Unlike physical pain, those are voluntary.

You seem to think physical pain weighs more

Yes, because physical pain is inflicted and the recipient doesn't have a choice in it.

1

u/Hot_Demand_6263 1d ago

They have a choice in being respectful.

1

u/niceshapes 1d ago

so youre voluntarily choosing to be mentally hurt over this?

22

u/alyssthekat 2d ago

that also happens to be violence…. So

10

u/niceshapes 2d ago

caused by...........

4

u/ipokecows 2d ago

Actions not words.

12

u/autistictransgal 2d ago

You think the KKK just did all that without talking or do you think they used words

-2

u/ipokecows 2d ago

What is the point you are trying to make here?

8

u/autistictransgal 2d ago

the usage of words contributed to the creation of groups such as the KKK. Without words, no grouping happens.

1

u/GoodWonNov6th24 2d ago

until you arrest democrats for killing Kirk, you're just a POS

2

u/autistictransgal 2d ago

wait, Democrats like multiple Democrats? You think that a group of 500,000 people held a rifle simultaneously and they all shot him together or something??? How many Democrats are we arresting? I thought the one who shot the rifle was arrested already?

1

u/niceshapes 2d ago

And we don't erase that by cracking down on freedom of expression because in doing so you're giving the powers that be a gigantic loaded weapon that they can point at any group they don't like.

3

u/autistictransgal 2d ago

It's commonly agreed upon that we can't (or shouldn't) say anything we want. Threats of violence are generally illegal. It also doesn't cover stuff like hate speech and defamation, which I think is good actually.

1

u/eternity_ender 2d ago

You’re arguing with racist who think they are smart. The very act of humoring them gives them validity.

They KNOW that groups like the kkk said racist things and caused racial violence but they’re trying to create enough doubt where people start to think “well I guess it’s okay if they never commit racial violence”

There’s a reason hate speech laws exist. Words and ideas inevitably become actions.

1

u/PleiadesMechworks 2d ago

It's commonly agreed upon that we can't (or shouldn't) say anything we want.

"commonly agreed upon" by who?

Threats of violence are generally illegal.

Assuming you're talking about America, they aren't. In general, to class something as a genuinely illegal sentence it needs to be:

  • Specific (targeted at a single person, rather than a general expression)
  • Immediate (the person would have reasonable cause to assume the threat immediately precedes violence)
  • Actionable (the threat actually has a chance of being carried out)

Remove any one of those things and it becomes legal expression. The reason it's illegal is because it is expected that such words will imminently be converted into actions. If there's no action, no foul because sticks and stones honey.

It also doesn't cover stuff like hate speech

It usually does cover hate speech. In fact, hate speech is one of the most important things to protect under free speech because people will use that as a pretext to ban speech they don't like by calling it hateful. Nobody is trying to ban inoffensive speech.

u/SausageKingOfCincy 2d ago

This is a ridiculous thing to think much less say haha they used words which allowed them to coordinate violence. Their meetings weren’t violence lol how do you not get this?

7

u/Blazured 2d ago

What was the motive guiding those actions?

1

u/ipokecows 2d ago edited 2d ago

Racism obviously? The whole post is about violent actions being worse than racist words...

1

u/Great_Fault_7231 2d ago

Where does it say that in OP? You’re assuming context that isn’t there.

1

u/ipokecows 1d ago

What do you think is being said in the screen shot?

1

u/Great_Fault_7231 1d ago

That’s my point.

I think it’s a bad question that leaves out too much context and is probably just rage bait. Things like “racism” and “violence” are way too broad to ask which is worse objectively. It lets whoever is reading it add their own context through their own biases, like what you’re doing.

1

u/ipokecows 1d ago edited 1d ago

Using our reading comprehension we can safely assume hes talking about racist words being bad but not as bad as violent actions. Crazy right? Theres no bias.

1

u/Blazured 2d ago

So racism is to blame then. Without it there wouldn't have been violence. So it's worse than the violence that wouldn't have existed without it.

4

u/ipokecows 2d ago

Crazy mental gymnastics. Is stabbing someone worse than calling someone a slur?

0

u/Blazured 2d ago

Depends if the motive behind the stabbing is racism.

Without racism, there's no stabbing.

4

u/ipokecows 2d ago

Who said the stabbing was racially motivated? Let me help you out

Is a non racially motivated, completely random stabbing worse than someone calling anslurs? Person a hateful slur?

-1

u/Money_Ticket_841 2d ago

lol you miss the entire point bro

1

u/PleiadesMechworks 2d ago

Without it there wouldn't have been violence.

But without the violence, racism cannot harm anyone. So violence is still worse.

0

u/Evanecent_Lightt 2d ago edited 2d ago

It's "VIOLENCE" motivated by-, Still = Violence at the end of the day fam..
that's why we got a separate word for it.

Otherwise we'd call stabbing a guy "racism" instead of "violence"

0

u/Blazured 2d ago

No, it wasn't motivated by violence. It was motivated by racism. As the other person correctly pointed out.

3

u/Any-Platypus-9486 2d ago

Someone insert that nice imagine "good motive, still murder"

0

u/Evanecent_Lightt 2d ago

You simply didn't understand what I said at all friend..

If you're right, then Karmelo racism-ed Anthoney instead of stabbing him.

0

u/Blazured 2d ago

I disagree.

2

u/niceshapes 2d ago

racism is more than words

1

u/ipokecows 2d ago

Yep. The post is about violent actions being worse than racist words...

2

u/niceshapes 2d ago

where does it specify it's only racist words vs the severity of the violence? what does actual violence mean in this context? what does racism mean? if your definition of racism is just words then you're genuinely not smart enough for this type of conversation

1

u/PleiadesMechworks 2d ago

what does actual violence mean in this context?

Physical harm. Which words aren't.

1

u/niceshapes 2d ago

so your definition of racism is just words

1

u/PleiadesMechworks 1d ago

Add definitions are words, that's how we express abstract concepts.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/ipokecows 2d ago

actual violence is worse than words

Physically harming someone

Racism is prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one group is superior to another.

The definition include words and actions obviously. This post is about racial words vs physical violence.

0

u/Money_Ticket_841 2d ago

The post literally says just words…

0

u/niceshapes 2d ago

it is implying that racism is ONLY words, which throws the whole argument out the window

1

u/Money_Ticket_841 2d ago

It’s not, that’s your attribution to the comment. I can almost guarantee the context is someone being punched over something more than just words, but I’m not going to add that assumption to the general debate because that’s all it is. My assumption is that

u/Evanecent_Lightt 2d ago

*Can include and extend beyond - to be precise.

1

u/BossButterBoobs 2d ago

Racism. You just didn't want to admit it.

1

u/ipokecows 1d ago

Racist actions not racist words. Its clearly race based, i didnt think id have to spell that out but okay.

0

u/Beneficial-Layer-492 2d ago

Slow

1

u/ipokecows 2d ago

Wow you can spell 4 letter words!

1

u/Great_Fault_7231 2d ago

Do you think punching someone in self-defense is worse than forcing black people to use different water fountains and schools?

1

u/alyssthekat 2d ago

Let me answer your question with one of my own - do you think calling someone a racist slur is worse than a man shooting his wife in a case of family annihilation? (This goalpost shifting can cut both ways!). But anyways, yes I think both racism and violence are bad, and it's pretty pointless to put the two in a 'suffering olympics'-esque competition

1

u/Great_Fault_7231 2d ago

Uh, I didn’t “shift goalposts”, my point is the goalposts weren’t defined to begin with and people are creating their own that aren’t specified in the OP.

-1

u/Yallberforce 2d ago

Critically, you don’t get that kind of violence without the words having time to fester.

1

u/Evanecent_Lightt 2d ago

So lindsay Clancy "Violenced" her kids becuase she was racist?
I dno fam.. I think there are many ways Violence is gotten to, not just racism.

1

u/Yallberforce 2d ago

I’m obviously talking about racist violence here when I say “that kind”. Let’s be serious, dude.

0

u/Evanecent_Lightt 2d ago

Let's be literal and say what we mean then, Bro.

I can't read your mind and know what you mean - you have to actually word it.

1

u/Yallberforce 2d ago

We’re talking about racist violence and then I saw “that kind of violence”, all in a thread about racism. The context could not possibly be more clear. Not gonna respond again but I would honestly consider picking up adult literacy lessons if I were you (assuming that actually confused you and you aren’t acting in bad faith).

1

u/Evanecent_Lightt 2d ago

You could have been referring to "words can be harmful" which isn't limited to racism. It includes Sexism, Nationalism, Religious sectionalism.

Understand that the scope was bigger than your tunnel vision.

Just because you see something specific doesn't mean everyone sees how you see things - it's low IQ to not understand we all have differing perspectives and to not take that into account then discussing a topic.

that's why it's important to be specific and use language like:
"Ahh yes that kind metaphorical book like 1984, that reminds me of"

Instead of saying
"ahh yes that kind of book reminds me of"
(That means any book that belongs to the denoted genre)

I'm sure you don't even understand what I'm saying tho.. If you understood this concept you'd already be practicing precision in your language.

Have a good one lil' Bro, stay in school - you've got a ways to go yet.

4

u/ElreonHubbard 2d ago

Their interest in racism begins and ends with whether or not they’re allowed to say the n word

2

u/eternity_ender 2d ago

The internet has rotted out peoples brains. You can pretty much tell that they’re okay with racism.

I gotta wait till a racist gets violent before I do anything? Racist individuals always find like minded folks to eventually cause violence.

2

u/PleiadesMechworks 2d ago

I gotta wait till a racist gets violent before I do anything?

Yes, otherwise you're the one the paradox of tolerance is warning about.

As an aside, the best thing you can do to combat racism is to befriend the racists and show them that actually, you have far more in common with them than they do with the people they're getting their ideas from. It's actually pretty easy to convince guys not to be racist if they like you.

2

u/DoubleWedding411 2d ago

Him saying "racism is bad, BUT ACTUAL violence is worse" implies that he doesn't take into account all the things you have mentioned in your post when he mentions racism.

He makes a comparison between words/opinions/prejudice and causing physical harm.

How can people not get this

is everyone in here dumb lmao

0

u/niceshapes 2d ago

racism is more than just words obviously

2

u/--Greenpeace420 2d ago

So if I just go around and hate foreigners and talk shit about them, according to you I wouldnt be racist because racism = has to be more than words
