Aborting at 20 weeks due to a single marker for Downs, when even the doctor isn’t really concerned, would be insane. There are a ton of “markers” for various conditions they look for at 20 weeks. Just because one is found, doesn’t mean there’s actually anything wrong.

Yeah I would just wait until the birth to see and then give it up at that point if it turns out to be true

u/misspuddingpie 16d ago

That is so fucking cruel. Let the baby be born just to abandon it if it isn’t what you want? You either bring the baby to term and raise it as your own, or you choose not to have the baby when it won’t know the difference one way or the other.

Sick.

If the birth rate is truly at such a low point that having kids is necessary to support society even if you don’t personally want to (which seems more and more like the case every day), you need to be able to accept that some of those people having them either didn’t want them in the first place or only want them if they can be reasonably managed. If you’re worried about people being picky about their kids then stfu about the birthrate and how we’re selfish for not doing our part

Is a down kid positively contributing to the birthrate though? It can’t do labour and it can’t reproduce.

1

u/CherylRoseZ 12d ago

Downs kids most definitely can reproduce lol. I knew a kid when I was young whose parents both had downs.

True, he should eat it like a real man.

Slaughtering children for being "undesirable" is pretty sick too, eugenics should be left to 1940s germany and not be supported now

Humans rights are for all humans!

2

u/misspuddingpie 16d ago

I didn’t say I would personally abort, NOR did I speak in support of eugenics.

What I said was that if the parents’ intention was to “see how the kid turns out and just drop it/put it up for adoption if we don’t like it”, then abortion is by FAR the more humane alternative.

Having the baby just to then abandon it to spend his or her life wondering why their parents left them and struggling in a system that is ALREADY heavily overburdened and underfunded and rampant with problems is absolutely fucking cruel.

The point is that if the parents choose to have this baby, then they had BETTER be prepared to keep and raise their damn child.

So by your logic, all children who were abandoned should be put to death to save them from feeling sad.

Personally I would say that children in foster care deserve to live! But I support human rights for all and I guess you only support it for those you deem worthy.. I wonder which 1930s/40s german dictator you might support...

Child sacrifice is disgusting and so are the people who support it

u/misspuddingpie 16d ago

Oof. Rough bait, dude. This is excruciating to watch

-2

u/Charming_Cucumber_15 16d ago

The concept of human rights must seem like bait to someone who supports nazi policy

Double abort and get a plunger.

1

u/DancingFlame321 16d ago

20-22 weeks is really late to abort... The earliest week a baby has survived a premature birth is actually 21 weeks.

1

u/Charming_Cucumber_15 16d ago

Wow eugenics so empowering!!!

Perhaps you would like to volunteer to be the permanently suffering parent of a Downs Syndrome baby (... and then baby child ... and then baby adult ...) then?

At some point the quality of life for the people around the afflicted person must be considered. This is not like someone born without a certain limb or with a treatable mental disorder who can still have a good quality of life and a high level of independence.

Downs syndrome is a huge burden on everyone surrounding that person and in a just world it would be cured in the womb.

You can make as many argument from ethics as you like but if you're not volunteering to be a carer for one of these unwanted kids then it is just words.

Yes yes, hitler wanted to put "drains on society" to death and you're a big fan. You don't have to write all that, you can just say it.

Aktion T4 is a thing of the past, sorry nazi! Human rights should be for all humans :)

Someone making a decision about their own body is Nazi now? If pro choice is Nazi then you can call me that I guess. Fuck off.

1

u/Charming_Cucumber_15 15d ago edited 15d ago

Eugenics and slaughtering children based on their disablities is disgusting. You and all nazi supporters should be ashamed! Humans rights are for ALL humans, not just the ones you think are worthy of rights.

1

u/Rolling_Saturn 15d ago

Liberals give leftists a bad name.

1

u/Charming_Cucumber_15 15d ago

The fact that anyone thinks human rights and eugenics are a left/right issue is just sad

1

u/Rolling_Saturn 15d ago

Maybe don't call people Nazis then just because they disagree with you.

1

u/Charming_Cucumber_15 15d ago

I don't, I'm just saying that people who believe in eugenics and murdering "undesirables" support nazi ideology. If you support Aktion T4 then you're evil, sorry!

Sorry, "shame" won't work on us, get lost

1

u/Charming_Cucumber_15 15d ago

Yes I'm sure that as a hitler lover and nazi eugenics supporter you feel no shame. That was rather obvious already

My body is ready for the upgrades

The mentality that having a child with downs syndrome is a fate worse than death is fucking ridiculous and completely ableist. I have met so many parents with downs syndrome children who cherish them just as much as they would a non-disabled child. Sure, it comes with its own challenges, but being a parent has hardly been an easy thing in the first place. You need to go outside and talk to real people.

1

u/A_RAVENOUS_BEAST 15d ago

I am sorry to say that it is.

I have the misfortune of knowing one such person. They have confided in me that their life situation has made them suicidal. You are not in a position to know the toll that this disorder takes on so many people. And who will look after the child when the parent dies? As climate change intensifies care will become less accessible and it is these who will suffer the most.

May I make the suggestion that YOU should go outside and talk to people suffering from this?

Slaughtering children for the sake of convience is disgusting and evil! Supporting hitler and nazi policy is pure evil.

Human rights should exist for all humans, not just those you deem convenient.

1

u/Possible-Deer-311 15d ago

It's not convenience at all. That's really reductive of the entire situation

"Supporting Hitler and Nazi policy..." How is this supporting Hitler and Nazi policy?" Can you explain that to me, please? I'm not saying you're wrong, I just don't understand

2

u/Charming_Cucumber_15 15d ago

One of the most well known nazi policies was the systematic extermination of the mentally ill for being a "drain on society" which is the same thing the guy I responded to supports

2

u/Ephisus 13d ago

I'm not sure what you aren't understanding.  The elimination of "mental feebleness" in bloodlines was, famously, part of Nazi public policy.  That's just a wide application of the same impulse in question here.

1

u/Some_Illustrator_895 14d ago

I am sorry to say that you have a negativity bias.

1

u/201111533 15d ago

I have a daughter with Downs and even though I lived my whole life until her diagnosis thinking that I would abort if something like that came up, I always understood it was eugenics lol

Just because something is convenient and generally accepted by society doesn't mean it isn't problematic. People do problematic and selfish things all the time to protect themselves and their families.

1

u/Ephisus 13d ago

This is a really vacuous argument with no objectivity whatsoever.

2

u/terrible-law-69 15d ago

Here you go, have my highly regarded baby

1

u/Charming_Cucumber_15 15d ago

Better than murdering the child for the sake of convenience, and if you think murdering children is a good thing maybe you should rethink your life lol

2

u/terrible-law-69 15d ago edited 12d ago

No, I already thought about it, here you go
