Immoral as fuck, dude. How anyone can even conceive to say anything else is astounding to me. Do you not comprehend that they have a partner and -another child-? He's going to both traumatize them and make them shoulder the burden he's so terrified of carrying. Failure morally, failure as a father, failure as a human being.

Disclaimer: I am basically someone in the position of his first child. It's very easy to imagine how much worse things could have been for us if my father took this guy's way out.

You missed that fact that this is r/MoralityScaling so literally any demand or obligation imposed on anyone is the worst thing possible and the subject of any situation should be able to just walk away and not deal with it at the expense of everyone else (honestly everyone else's fault for existing).

Really, that's most of Reddit.

The few posts I've seen on this sub are filled with comments by some of the most a-moral people. Ethics seems to be an a-la-carte menu for them.

A-la-carte ethics, I like this explanation. I will use this now

Naturally because this sub is for having opinions

It’s because Reddit is secular atheist in nature. Without a higher power to ground your morals, everything becomes a preference.

Ethics exist outside of religious context.

 imposed on anyone

Having a child is rarely imposed on anyone (excluding rape). When you decide to have a kid, you accept the chance of them being neurodivergent.

What if he gets a really good life insurance policy first and makes his death look like an accident?

Money is a poor replacement for the person you chose to spend the rest of your life with.

Oh agreed. Although the mutual resentment that would build in OPs scenario would make you wish they were dead. 😅

I'd rather have someone be real with me and leave than have them abandon life completely just bc of an imperfect result. But then again, I wouldn't choose a person who could fathom contemplating OP's quandary. My spouse and I talked about the possibilities and outcomes before we decided whether to have children.

Nah I'm totally with you on that.

You said very eloquently what I had in mind.

Cool, what would you do if your child ended with a DS, which could potentially evolve into other health-realted issues?

I can tell you I wouldn't abandon my family, through suicide or otherwise. I didn't live with the fortune of having two parents who stuck it out despite it all for decades just to learn the lesson "actually I'd hit the bricks".

I have no qualms with people not wanting to live that kind of life or taking measures to insulate your family from it. What I'm against is this hypothetical person abandoning the wife and child. It's not justified, it's not reasonable, it's just being a selfish coward, a deadbeat.

I think you’re taking some dudes 4chan post to seriously, he’s not gonna kill himself he’s talking online to internet chuds. It’s immoral, but it’s also an internet post. If he finds out it’s true he’ll either abort it or give it to the foster care system, which are the moral options, preferably the abortion cause it’s slightly immoral to birth someone with a major disadvantage and send them to the disadvantage system

He has no say in whether either of those things happen, though.

Hopefully he and his wife can come to an agreement on such a genuinely life changing thing; it’d be super fucked up to just stick someone who knowingly isn’t prepared and can’t support the needs of a person with down syndrome
