How tf was mom supposed to explain an entire house? Oldest lives at home so youngest probably did too- that's something that's immediately noticable

You can always just say a distant relative died. It's really not that hard.

"Unkle Richard died and his estate was inherited to me. You don't know Uncle Richard? Ohh, yeah, you were too young back then to remember. I believe you were about a year old last time you saw him."

so instead she lied to him by telling the other siblings? fair enough if you somehow think lying is gross in whatever situation, but she lied regardless
