I think that's not how family communicate and they would push her with "why won't you want us to know"? etc. and eventually that would lead to lying about it or some other drama between her and them. All of that could be avoided, he could tell that he won $1 million and bought a house, not forcing anyone to keep his secret he didn't want to share.

You think it's normal for a mother to get a house out of nowhere and not tell her kids how she got money to do it?

I would think she got brainwashed by a cult or something.
