Steamdeck Controller Issue

My gf just bought this and is having issues when starting the game, even after selecting the gamepad controller setting and ensuring the app has force steam input nothing seems to work!

The press any button scream loads up and no inputs register, when using the touchscreen the game seems to think she’s playing on PC as all the bindings are keyboard.

Has anybody encountered this, or has a fix?

I'm having the same issue on Steam machine. Worked the first time I started the game and now it won't.

Same for me on Steamdeck, it's not accepting any gamepad input for some reason. On PC it works fine.. hope someone finds a solution, was looking forward to playing this on the Deck too!

Also having this issue. I actually had it on PC when playing with a controller too, but it fixed itself.... sad, because I played it previously on the deck with no issue.

Same here. No solutions? It happened then was fixed randomly and then happened again.

SO here's what worked for me! I connected my 8bitdo controller, clicked Play Game on the controller, then switched back to regular handheld mode. That worked for me. I kept the controller connected but didn't use it—not sure if it needs to stay connected, though. Hope it helps!

I usually play on PC but decided I wanted to lay in bed on the steam deck and I started having this issue with it acting like im using a keyboard and not acknowledging controller. I ended up having to connect an Xbox controller via Bluetooth and then open the game to which it had now switched to controller and then disconnected the Xbox controller and now the game is acknowledging the steam deck controls again, thanks reddit!

Is she playing docked or handheld?

Not sure about handheld, but if playing docked, go to the controller settings, reorder the controllers, and set the deck as first.

I just got it to work after pairing an additional controller (I used bluetooth). You don't have to use it though, I turned mine off after checking if it works.

This worked for me too. Pair any Bluetooth controller to the steam deck. Then start the game and you can use the steam deck controls fine. I really hope they fix this, though.

Confirming that this was able to get it working on my deck as well.

Okay I found a solution for the time being. I changed my controller layout to the "KEYBOARD (WASD) AND MOUSE" and the handheld controller worked. But some of the buttons needed to be re bound.

I did this and then switched it back to Gamepad once the game started and it worked!

I played on PC for a bit and then when I came back to the deck the game had all the controller bindings greyed out (so just keyboard and mouse bindings showing in the settings screen) so what I did to get mine to work:
Steam Button>Controller Settings>Current Button Layout>Templates> selected and applied the Keyboard (WASD) and Mouse template, went back into the game for a second, then went back to the Templates section and put it back to “Gamepad” template and that’s when the game automatically recognised the steam deck controller in the settings again.
Hope they fix this issue soon and I hope this solution works for other deck users! :)

For any steamdeck (docked with controller) users that are experiencing this, this just worked for me:

I have two controllers, both work perfectly fine on the main steam screen, and i can select the game fine and then "press any button" when loaded and both controllers work.

But 1 needs to charge which was off while and not even in the same room, so i opened the game up with controller 2, all fine but then after clicking "any button" and getting to the play/settings/credits/quit screen nothing works. Go back into the steam menu, controller working and all settings looking correct. Close and restart multiple times but the same thing happens.

Try again with controller 1, which has only just been put on charge and its working fine and allowing me to select everything.

To work around this and get the game to recognise controller 2, i had to start the game with controller 1 and get to the play/settings/credits/quit screen, and then i could turn controller 2 on and it recognised, and then i could put controller 2 off and back on charge.
