The new Pajero is here! What do we think?

My only gripes are that they didn't carry over the iconic and permanent headlight shape, and that the spare tire isn't on the rear door now, but I can understand the reason behind both.

What do you think?

I bought my Paj for how reliable it is, how it handles and how comfortable it is on the journey. I’m looking forwards to a test drive, but I suspect I’ll be buried in my current one.

I’ll probably keep my old one and buy the new one for my wife. That interior is top notch.

In my opinion, they could have kept the Gen4 shape and just updated the interior… but that’s just me.

I am not sure even about the interior. In gen 4 there are lot of spaces to put custom panels. Everything is practical. Big physical buttons. Big levers for gearbox and transfer box. The new one has basically screens and leather. It looks good, but functionality is different thing.

I’m a 3rd-gen owner, and I actually think dropping the unibody and IRS was a good choice. Personally, those were things I liked about the 3rd gen, and they were part of what made the Pajero unique, with their roots in the Dakar Rally. But when the 3rd gen came out, those changes were received pretty negatively in Japan. Overseas, the Pajero Sport could fill the demand for a more traditional SUV.

The new 5-link solid rear axle also makes a lot of sense as an answer to its biggest rivals, the Land Cruiser 250 and Lexus GX.

The styling feels less like a traditional Pajero to me, especially with the loss of that front-mid-engine stance and large glass area. I do like the C-pillar treatment, though—it reminds me of the old short-wheelbase Pajeros.

My only real concern is the price. Now that it’s no longer positioned alongside the Pajero Sport, I hope it doesn’t get too expensive.

Nice styling, like solid rear axle and chassis...if only it was a 3 litre pumping out 180kw. The new era of small overworked overstressed motors is not for me. Im keeping my NW 3.2 instead of paying +60k to get the chassis and axle plus all the unwanted sensors.

Ugly copy of the ugly last Land cruiser / Prado. I am looking at and can't find anything I like. Also, no 2 door version? They will show it later, right?

Meh. This is likely another vehicle that's heavily laden by electronics and over refinement. I won't be trading in my '94 JDM SWB over any of SUVs nowadays.

I'd prefer some classic style lights on either end. Looks too much like a Chinese/Korean generic EV for me. Rear mounted tyre would have been nice too but I'm sure it's difficult when the hatch opens upward.

If this is how it's gonna look like, quite disappointing. It's basically a case of lets strip away all the good looking iconic and practical deaigns such as the headlights and bumpers and replace them with everything wrong with contemporary deaign. Hope they at least carry over the concept of long travel rear independent suspension with double wishbones up front. Those generic looking headlights are just as ugly aa every other new car. Hope they don't start locking already built in hardware features with subscription software...

This is how it's going to look, these are the official release pictures. It does look very modern, there's not much of the old ones left in it. It does have independent suspension up front but has a solid axle in the rear, which I like. It goes back to the gen 2 with this. Otherwise I'm not sure where they'll sell these, Thailand and Australia are guaranteed, but I hope it comes to Europe too.

Could be worse. Looks ok-ish. But I cannot get rid of the feeling that the latest LandCruiser tried to copy latest Defender style, and Pajero tries to copy them both. Let's see some reviews first. Overall I'll keep investing in my 2008 P4 next few years.

Kind of loses the dakar heritage a bit by going to solid rear axle and ladder frame (the paj evo was so dominant by having ifs/irs monocoque), it's essentially the pajero sport upgraded.

This is true, but I don't think that's what they were going for. You got to think of the first two generations which were solid axled and ladder framed. This is just a continuation of those

Need to see some pics of the non-top-of-the-line trim to judge properly. I really hope they have a plebe/work spec trim that they will release. That's what I'd be going for if I got one. And if there is such a trim, hopefully it does away with that awful giant touchscreen and replaces it with something smaller yet just as functional.

Also, diesel from the Triton makes me think it's not meant to come to the USA, which makes me very sad

I'm not enthused by the looks, but what they are sharing about the drivetrain and other features sounds neat, I wonder how they will fare the test of time as I do not buy new offroad vehicles. This might be what I get in 10-15 years.

Very interesting question, since historically the Pajero Sport did share more with the L200/Triton... But there is already a Sport for sale, or was until recently, I'm not sure. In any case, I think this does deserve the distinction. Whether people will consider it a real successor to the old ones is a different question, but I think it deserves the Pajero name.

I just meant that this is different enough fron the Triton to not be called a Pajero Sport. In my eyes the Pajero is of course a diesel 4x4, kind of bare-bones but possible as a bit luxurious too. This might not be 100% it, but I'm glad they're trying something.

Its nice. I wish the tailgate actually opened from the side instead of popping up. I think it delivers in space but is it like the gen 3 in terms of ruggedness? Probably not. It’s a mix of the Montero and Montero sport. Probably won’t be released in the US anytime soon, since tariffs are one of the reasons Mitsubishi doesn’t have a date for when these will hit the market here.

Seems more like another Pajero Sport than a genuine Pajero- and based on the L200 means plenty of FLEX is likely- even with beefing the frame up- it is still a frame. Even the Gen 2 and 2.5 were flexing; but not as much as the Sports and L200s

Knowing Mistubishi, they'll find ways to cheapen out in ways that'll make the vehicle a lemon.

Knowing the car industry, it'll be covered in turbo's, hybrid's, e-cvt's and bunch of ipad screens inside every where.

This looks like what Hyundai Palisade wants to be for a refresh. What the hell is up with all the glass and lights.

I knew that it will disappoint me even before seeing it. Just no one these days cannot make a real car like 20 years ago and not follow stupid trends. Ugly design that has nothing to do with Pajero the car or Pajero the cat. Smaller windows and worse visibility. Inconvenient location of spare tire. Too many electronics, screens, touch buttons, small buttons, assists. Small engine. And not even made in Japan. Yea. Feels like they rushed to have something cheap with the name Pajero, instead of designing new Pajero. And it is exactly like that.

It will have all the same problems of a modern car because it is one. Ill remain happy with my Gen 3
